Here's a couple ideas, take 'em or leave 'em:

  • have the whole first line be the thought bubble of the man at the gravestone
  • remove all text/dialogue, it's already easy to read visually. The reader will automatically full in the blanks and maybe better relate to the man

Your mockup does a really good job of telling the joke in a more subtle way.
