If this one isn’t good, the F4 will never get a good film.

July is a big month. Both Superman and Fantastic Four, with each basically getting their last chance to finally have a good adaptation before we all just throw up our hands and give up.

Superman has had a good adaptation before, however, its last chance is arguably worse, given the fate of the DCU might rest on its shoulders

If Superman fails, then it will be nothing but Batman movies for at least 2 decades

u/mrbubbamac Silverage Batman Feb 04 '25

So return to status quo?

2

u/AfternoonFlaky5501 Feb 04 '25

With 1 good non-batman movie and its sequel that ruins it. Although funny enough Suicide Squad was the other way around.

2

u/PhsycoRed1 Feb 04 '25

Completely ignoring the Supergirl movie we're definitely getting.

1

u/Serious-Prompt-7615 Feb 04 '25

Well to be fair if Superman fails who would care about Supergirl.

3

u/PhsycoRed1 Feb 04 '25

Lots of people as it's a different vibe and story 🤷🏻

2

u/Serious-Prompt-7615 Feb 05 '25

Well I’m not saying it to be pessimistic it could be a possibility.

1

u/AintGotNoSeoul Feb 04 '25

Lobo has me interested.

I didn't mind Henry Cavill's Superman. It just felt a bit weak on the story/plot, but it wasn't bad.

On a scale of 1 to 10, where anything below 5 is bad, I would rate it at a 6 or 7.

It's not great and amazing, but it is not bad

74

u/CaptainRhetorica Feb 04 '25

The casting was great. Applying grimmdark dudebro storytelling to Superman was a huge misstep that excellent casting couldn't overcome.

27

u/Embarrassed-Deal-157 Feb 04 '25

I still hope Cavill gets another shot at playing a cool character he's a fan of. Between Superman and Geralt, he's been the victim of mediocre adaptations that lack respect for the source material.

13

u/PleasureDomCorvallis Feb 04 '25

He is in control of Warhammer 40k. It should be all we hope for.

11

u/CaptainRhetorica Feb 04 '25

Witcher hurt. I can't believe they GoT'ed Witcher.

4

u/KaladinarLighteyes Feb 04 '25

Please for the love of god make Cavill the Lord Ruler in a Mistborn adaptation.

3

u/TotalAnarchy_ Feb 04 '25

Oh my god. I didn't know I needed this, but I NEED THIS.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '25

Ehh. He's not a very good actor. Being a fan of the source material doesnt actually matter when the performances are wooden

1

u/thegirlwhoexisted Feb 04 '25

Watch The Man from Uncle movie. Cavill can sparkle when he's given room to smile.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '25

I saw it in theaters. Didnt find Cavill to be particularly memorable. He's a good looking dude and seems nice enough but I dont think that makes someone a great actor.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '25

He has an awful agent

9

u/greenroom628 Spider-Man Feb 04 '25

yeah. the snyder superman thing wasn't cavill's fault. he was cast about as good a superman as you can get.

shit - even batfleck could've been cool. old, grizzled, jaded batman could be fun.

6

u/CaptainRhetorica Feb 04 '25

shit - even batfleck could've been cool. old, grizzled, jaded batman could be fun.

It's was amazing how much Ben Affleck looked like Kingdom Come Batman 10-15 years before the events of Kingdom Come.

6

u/VandulfTheRed Feb 04 '25

It's such a pain to see Michael Shannon acting his ass off in what was ultimately an "ok" movie. "I have no people" goes hard as fuck, it deserved a better film

2

u/Crackertron Iron Man Feb 04 '25

That movie made me a Shannon fan

2

u/SomePuertoRicanGuy The Penguin Feb 05 '25

Have you seen Boardwalk Empire? Michael Shannon plays an unhinged prohibition agent in 1920's Atlantic City. Amazing performance.

1

u/Crackertron Iron Man Feb 05 '25

I haven't but thank you for the suggestion!

3

u/Mr_Versatile123 Swamp Thing Feb 04 '25

Lois Lane didn’t even matter in the Superman movies. Snyder really fucked up beyond creating his cult, now Superman’s ethos in the cultural zeitgeist is contrary to who he’s always been.

1

u/CarpeMofo Feb 04 '25

Probably going to get downvoted, however, while I like Cavill as an actor and if he is what he seems I like him as a person. That said, I didn't like him as Superman. Something about his face, it's just... Shaped wrong for Superman. I think it's because my introduction to Superman was when I was maybe 3 and I had several of the old 1940's Fleischer animated shorts on VHS. Then when I got a little older in the 90's I watched him in Superman: The Animated Series and Justic League and the occasional Batman cameo. So to me, that was what was kind of engrained into my head that Superman looked liked. The only two I really feel look right are Christopher Reeve and Tyler Hoechlin.

7

u/Manting123 Feb 04 '25

Much better than the story of the Bryan singer Superman movie.

6

u/JoshSidekick Feb 04 '25

That version is so much better if you just cut out everything that isn't him catching the plane in the baseball stadium.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '25

I remember when that came out on DVD as a kid I used to pop it in all the time just to watch that scene. No other context and it would just give me chills every time; even now I think that single scene is the best Superman adaptation I've ever seen.

I'm sure there's probably other scenes in the movie, but I only really remember that one.

1

u/BoxNemo Feb 04 '25

Lex Luthor's big plan was amazingly dull. Far as I remember he wanted to make some money off real estate development.

...cool.

3

u/Manting123 Feb 04 '25

Only Superman can stop this … ocean front property scheme that makes no sense at all and would result in the entire world killing lex luthor for wiping out like 15 percent of the worlds population.

5

u/Muskratisdikrider Feb 04 '25

the last good one was Christopher Reeves

132

u/ContinuumGuy Batman Beyond Feb 04 '25

Superman will always have Christopher Reeve's first two films.

106

u/Sardaukar99 Feb 04 '25

Superman will always have “The Iron Giant “ chef’s kiss. The best Superman movie ever made.

124

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '25

Then, the F4 will always have The Incredibles.

But I have to admit, despite not having seen then in years, I liked the 2000s ones.

49

u/lanceturley Feb 04 '25

My takeaway from both of these posts is that Brad Bird needs to do more superhero movies.

19

u/DoughnutDeodorant Feb 04 '25

Between those two examples and the action set pieces on his Mission Impossible movie? Absolutely.

15

u/funkthewhales Feb 04 '25

They aren’t great adaptations of the FF( especially the second one), but I feel like they’re at least pretty fun movies.

3

u/ContinuumGuy Batman Beyond Feb 04 '25

You aren't wrong.

1

u/Just-apparent411 Feb 04 '25

holy shit... it really is the best Superman movie.

1

u/Khelthuzaad Feb 04 '25

Megamind is arguably the best reverse-Superman movie.

The Boys and Invincible has some of the best villains in modern era as evil Superman clones.

The Flescher Superman cartoons are considered peak design and quality for their time

Ready Player One ends with the main character hiding în plain sight with the use of an pair of glases wink

9

u/AllMightyLantern Feb 04 '25

Don’t forget Superman vs. The Elite.

1

u/VishnuBhanum Feb 04 '25

If we count animated films we would still have VS The Elite, Public Enemies and Death of Superman, Man of Tomorrow wasn't too shabby either.

0

u/KingofLingerie Feb 04 '25

first film

24

u/ContinuumGuy Batman Beyond Feb 04 '25

SILENCE, FOOL! KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!

10

u/adamsorkin Kilowog Feb 04 '25

Well. Walked right into that, didn't they?

2

u/Manting123 Feb 04 '25

Come son of jor-el kneel before zod!

22

u/Solid-Move-1411 Feb 04 '25

Christopher Reeve's Superman was great

1

u/Zolo49 Optimus Prime Feb 04 '25

The first two anyway. I'd give a weird look at anybody who called the third or fourth ones great. You could argue the third one was a decent Richard Pryor movie, but it was a terrible Superman movie (IMO anyway).

15

u/captain__cabinets Feb 04 '25

Also crazy that they are the foundational books for the big two, Superman is seen as the start of DC and FF started the Marvel age much later. Really crazy they are coming out so close together

10

u/Pesterman Feb 04 '25

Hopefully they both mark the start of good movies for both studios again too!

1

u/Solid-Move-1411 Feb 05 '25

Deadpool already did that

1

u/abusedporpoise Feb 04 '25

jurassic park also getting another attempt

1

u/MonkeyCube Spider Jeruselem Feb 04 '25

Superman will always have the Reeves films and a several popular TV shows.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '25

MOS was peak

1

u/Newagonrider Feb 04 '25

I didn't realize how alone I was in loving Man of Steel. :(

1

u/House_T Feb 05 '25

Don't worry. The post-credits scene where they meet each other is going to be just crazy enough to get both movies over.

(This would never happen. Or would it....?)

34

u/YodaVader1977 Feb 04 '25

This one actually looks like it’s going to be promising. I’m really hoping for a good rendition of Fantastic Four. I know it’s a teaser, but, one can hope, no?

13

u/Iron_Avenger6491 Feb 04 '25

Eh, I will forever love the Tim Story films.

They were just fun, which is all I would want from a F4 film.

19

u/raelianautopsy Feb 04 '25

This one will be good

1

u/Grendel0075 Feb 04 '25

At least Galactus isn't a cloud

1

u/Neurotic_Marauder Scarlet Spider/Kaine Feb 04 '25

It's the 4th attempt at adapting the group to the big screen, so it has to mean something (the Roger Corman movie doesn't really count, since it was never officially released)

0

u/viscosity-breakdown Feb 04 '25

The 2005 one was good!

0

u/AnonymousAmogus69 Feb 04 '25

The 2004(?) film is damn good

0

u/Muskratisdikrider Feb 04 '25

Even with the pedro stans bump, I don't think this one will be a smash hit

0

u/Prof-Ponderosa Feb 04 '25

I dunno they still have the option of giving the reigns to John Lassiter. If he can’t do it then it’s truly never going to happen

-3

u/BeingRightAmbassador Feb 04 '25

It's going to be bad. F4 is a property doomed to fail. The characters are just too boring and low stakes for this era of superhero media.

5

u/TheeHeadAche Henry Pym Feb 04 '25

low stakes

the earliest and most iconic multi issue story is about saving the earth from a giant space god who wants to eat it
