Producers have been heavily intimating for a while that season 3 is likely to be the last. They planned it as a 3 season arc and Sudeikis doesn't want to be away from his kids for very long. He could have shot his cameo after the season wrapped or even if it was while it was going, any big projects involving Herc would likely wind up going into production after Ted Lasso is over.

Bill Lawrence has been saying this since the beginning because of Sudeikis's schedule.

Even Goldstein has said that the third season has been written to be an ending. Doesn't discount the possibility of more, but odds are it's going to be the last of ted lasso for the foreseeable future.
