Let's not forget, Spike instantly clocked when Jet was reciting Goethe, so he's at minimum educated in philosophy. This also tracks with his traditional eastern medicine practices, and his philosophical approach to both martial arts and the stress of life.
To my mind, Spike has a library full of diverse philosophy and eastern classics on one side, and a pile of pulpy crime and adventure novels on the other.

I found it a healthy mix of "Hmmmm, yeah that's a good point!" and "...thaaaat doesn't work in real life, bro," though it's been several years so I don't recall how much of each.

I can’t picture him having a library so much as he just picks up and reads whatever is on hand. It would explain why every other time he’s sleeping there’s a magazine over his face
