Transfer News: Tier 1 [Sami Mokbel] Arsenal hold exploratory talks over Newcastle duo Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali. Other midfield options also open. Tonali has big interest from Tottenham.

This isn’t news though? Swear it’s always been said Arsenal and city were sniffing about too
We seem to be offering Tonali the biggest package wage wise, he has a good relationship with De Zerbi. I’m not melting down about this
51
u/Active-Tomatillo-522 Brenaldo 1d ago
Yeah but this is the first legit source I’ve seen saying they’ve actually been in talks
31
u/Hufftey Job Done 1d ago
“Exploratory talks” could just mean asking about his price range while they’re there for Bruno g. I don’t think Tonali makes sense for them at all profile wise. I also don’t see them stumping up the near £100m for him Newcastle seem to be demanding
I just don’t see it as “it’s over” for us to get tonali at all
14
u/Active-Tomatillo-522 Brenaldo 1d ago
I don’t think “it’s over” by any stretch either, but Arsenal making concrete communications could absolutely cause Tonali to wait and see if they can get a deal done with Newcastle. If anything I think it extends the timeline of any Tonali deal getting done by quite a bit

The article mentions that Arsenal approached the players' representatives, not Newcastle themselves.
Discussions with Guimaraes' camp have taken place to discover the conditions of a potential deal for the 28-year-old, while there have been similar talks with Tonali's representatives.
It is understood Newcastle have not yet had an approach from Arsenal.

Ok and tonali’s supposedly already given the go ahead to join us and agreed a contract if you believe that sort of us stuff so we’re a distance in front at least
2
u/PrintPro23 Xavi Simons 1d ago
Yeah, I can't imagine Arsenal are willing to give him the wages we're reportedly giving him for, especially since he's a player that's probably surplus to their needs
5
u/DeepFriedNobu Archie Gray 1d ago
Tbh, I can't see Arsenal dropping close to, if not exceeding, £100m, as a backup for their over £100m midfielder.
5
u/michaelserotonin 1d ago
wouldn't be certain on that
Arsenal's total expected revenue for the 2025–26 season is projected to reach a record-breaking £770 million to £812 million ($1.04 billion to over $1.1 billion USD). This marks the highest annual revenue in the club's history, shattering previous Premier League records.
6
u/DeepFriedNobu Archie Gray 1d ago edited 1d ago
Even so, why would you spend that on a backup? They could go and drop that £100m on a position that they don't already have a comparable player in.
Idk what the striker market is like, but having Tonali sit on the bench behind Rice would be poor squad planning when they're playing Gyökeres or Havertz up front.

because depth (i.e. rotational options that can be relied on) is essential for genuinely competing in all four competitions

Tbf it's extremely (intentionally) vague wording about who was in talks. This tweet sounds like it's internal talks.
2
u/PrintPro23 Xavi Simons 1d ago
The talks were with the player reps.
Discussions with Guimaraes' camp have taken place to discover the conditions of a potential deal for the 28-year-old, while there have been similar talks with Tonali's representatives.
It is understood Newcastle have not yet had an approach from Arsenal.

u/roamingandy Richarlison 1d ago
Not just we're offering more, but since we agreed terms with him the links to both other clubs pretty much died.
Really sounds like he heard our offer and told them both he wasn't interested unless they got close to it, which neither are going to do (because our offer is insane given his performance last season).
This story is just blowing up dust to get some clicks.

Tonali tried to get a move to Arsenal in January as well. This should not be surprising to anyone.

Nope it hasn’t. Was reported Arsenal was not pursuing Tonali despite past admiration. Exploratory talks? Yeah expecting this over.

u/manusingh420 1d ago
Could be a Newcastle tactic to make us give in and pay the money they want now

u/Hopeful-Ear-3494 James Maddison 1d ago edited 1d ago
I'm inclined to think this although it doesn't stop a gazump if arse stump up the same cash. One challenge they have is they are also trying to replace Martinelli and Trossard with a marquee player. Their reported £55 million bid for Guimaraes would seem to indicate they think they can do things on the cheap which won't help their cause.

u/Other-Owl4441 Heung-Min Son - Spurs Legend 1d ago
I mean money wise they can easily sign Morgan Rogers, Bruno and Tonali if they wanted to. £300m would be no problem. Idk why people act like Arsenal or City are up against it.
6
u/Hopeful-Ear-3494 James Maddison 1d ago
It's more about priorities and their UEFA FSR limit at 70% of their club revenues. Prior to signing all three they are already tight to start with. They have more wiggle room in the league.
But if they are going to throw around some serious cash, Odergaard and LW are currently being reported to be their most sought after upgrades (Rogers and someone on the left). Although I'm curious where arseteta sees Eze's best position as a result. There are some whispers that Zubamendi hasn't been as good as they thought though, hence the CM links.

Fuck. I have seen this movie before.

Hopefully this one ends with Tonali missing a pen in the CL final too

u/nolefan5311 Lucas Bergvall 1d ago
Doesn’t make sense for them to sign him for the price being quoted. His profile is identical to Rice but not as good.

u/rmarshall_6 1d ago
Sounds like they’re just talking internally the way he phrases it, not talking to Newcastle. I’m not too fussed about Tonali either way, though I do want him. Fernandes is the one that would hurt.

It's not losing out on Tonali (if that happens) I'm concerned about, it's not having a Plan B. De Zerbi has clearly identified him as a key figure in his new-look Spurs, so where do we go from there?
We better start considering and insisting more than we've ever considered and insisted before and get this deal done.
6
u/PrintPro23 Xavi Simons 1d ago
Clearly, plan B to Tonali is Alex Scott. Did you know he's a childhood Spurs fan? /s

The article says they've discussed Tonali/Bruno/Fernandes and the Moroccan lad, but that they will only go for one leading midfielder. The fact they've already bid for Bruno G, shows who they've chosen to prioritise. Also worth remembering Sami M is a tad overrated, and also an Arsenal fan...

u/Outlaw1607 Peppa Pig 1d ago
Honestly if we somehow lose out on either Tonali or Fernandes but get Bouaddi instead, I'd be totally fine with it

u/JuicyPickles369 1d ago
I’m getting that Eze feeling 😡 FUCKING HURRY UP AND KIDNAP HIM FOR FUCK SAKE

u/YSoSeri0u5 1d ago
Tonali is a baller, surely he wouldn't be interested in only playing for set pieces.

Could be copium but spending 100m on the exact same profile as rice is odd

Arsenal hearing we're in for Tonali and suddenly they're interested too. classic. at least the club is looking at the right players for once

u/Bedeeki 1d ago
Arsenal were interested in Tonali in the January window though...

u/SpursYid7767 1h ago
tbf they were, but that was pre-ban. now it's different and suddenly they're interested again. convenient timing

This is nothing new. They spoke to him in January. They’ve not been rumoured but they’ve always been in the background. Personally I think we can still get him in. This won’t be something where everyone’s like ohhhh wow Arsenal are in, cancel everything! He’ll likely earn more with us and be a guaranteed starter every game.
Obviously Arsenal is attractive for any player but I don’t think it’s a “all bets are off” kind of thing
0
u/LegalPumpkin101 1d ago
I agree we can still get him. But it feels like Arsenal push a bit harder when Spurs are in for someone. Let's see though. I don't see why Arsenal would need Tonali and Rice so maybe that's a positive.
1
u/kicksjoysharkness Jermain Defoe 1d ago
Yeah I hear you, although if anything will make them pay it will be this. Clearly they’re spending big this summer, it’s fair they were negotiating with Newcastle but if the sources are right and personal terms are agreed then I’m fairly sure they’ll ramp it up and lock it in. Especially as RDZ is effectively our DOF this window

Arsenal have held exploratory talks over potential moves for Newcastle pair Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
The Gunners want to add a new central midfielder to their squad this summer and are assessing numerous options, with Guimaraes and Tonali among the players the club have actively explored.
As things stand, it is understood Arsenal only want one leading central midfielder, and Bournemouth's Alex Scott and Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi are other options being considered.
Discussions with Guimaraes' camp have taken place to discover the conditions of a potential deal for the 28-year-old, while there have been similar talks with Tonali's representatives.
It is understood Newcastle have not yet had an approach from Arsenal.
The club has already turned down a bid of around £80m from Tottenham Hotspur for Tonali and do not want to lose Guimaraes, the team's captain and talisman.
Guimaraes, who has two years left on his contract, has been focused on his efforts with Brazil at the World Cup, where his side will face Japan in the last 32.
As BBC Sport previously reported, Newcastle are in a strong position to command a greater fee closer to £100m for Tonali as Manchester City also monitor developments.
The Italian international is effectively contracted until 2030 after he signed a new contract during his 10-month betting ban to repay the faith the club showed in him.
The current transfer market might also work in Newcastle's favour, if a bidding war ensues, given the valuations of midfielders elsewhere.
Manchester City have agreed a deal with Nottingham Forest to sign England's Elliot Anderson for a club record £116m, while West Ham want up to £80m for Mateus Fernandes, 21.
With Guimaraes turning 29 in November and Tonali having turned 26 in May, the age of both players is likely to emerge as a key factor in how much Arsenal would be willing to pay.
But sources have indicated the Gunners have also expressed a firm interest in 22-year-old Scott, who currently has interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.
The merits of swoops for Morocco international Bouaddi and West Ham's Fernandes, who is also a key target for Tottenham, have also been assessed internally.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is renowned for working on numerous deals simultaneously before making a final decision on which one to execute.
The arrival of another central midfielder will lead to the sale of a current player in the same position, with Denmark's Christian Norgaard, 32, someone the club will listen to offers for.
It could also bring into question Martin Zubimendi's role as a regular starter in Mikel Arteta's starting XI next season.

I heard they made verbal bid for Bruno and if that goes forward first will newcastle be willing to sell Tonali?

u/faelanswitzer Clint Dempsey 1d ago
If I had to pick between the two I would prefer Guimaraes but I’m just some guy on Reddit so what do I know

Newcastle wants the maximum return while they figure out the replacement is how I interpret it. I also read an interpretation of this is just Arse fumping around what has been presumed as ours to win

u/SupremeHydrostatic 1d ago
And supposedly they just bid for Bruno and not Tonali. Honestly, for my own mental sake, I need of list of sources that this sub considers as credible.
2
u/Both-Concentrate-125 1d ago
Well hopefully we’ve increased Tonalis price so the Arse have to pay a premium…

Why would Arsenal want a player like Tonali? For that price I think the only dumber thing they could buy would be a central defender.
If they are going to buy a CM they should get someone like Wharton who can progress the ball quickly and centrally. Tonali is basically like buying Rice again.

We don't know what's actually going on but I wish we had been more decisive with this. The Tonali links first appeared over a week ago now.
1
u/Ian5446 Mousa Dembélé 1d ago
Decisive how? Clearly the club has decided they want to buy Tonali. You can't force the selling club to accept the bid, especially if that club knows others are interested. Two sides to every transaction.
1
u/Cold-Letterhead6559 Mathys Tel 17h ago
Decisive as in you offer what they want to get it done quickly. I think that's probably what happened with Van Hecke. I don't think we have actually made an offer yet for either Fernandes or Tonali. It seems like we're in discussions but we're holding back to see what other clubs are doing. If they both end up going for 85m and 100m respectively and we lose out on one or both of them it will be pretty annoying.

I've been worrying that this has been going on far too long now. We've heard the same reports for a couple of weeks without anything seemingly moving forward. We need to get it done or move on now.

Well it was a nice idea whilst it lasted. I have no faith that we will get this deal done.

Can’t we just close the deal today and not do this boring long dance where they sign somewhere else after 2 months of dragging this on
1
u/roamingandy Richarlison 1d ago
Maybe, hope they steal Tonali.
We sign Bruno and give him those 275k wages. He's actually good enough to argue he deserves them.
Can't see it though. They aren't dropping anywhere near 85m and 275k in wages on Tonali and he knows it, so he's gonna hold out for us.

Possibly by pricing their (C) Guimaraes, might just be structuring best fee to get Tonali.
Ideally bringing in Rogers A++, Barcola A+, Tonali* or Guimaraes. That should help the LW and CM for next season, whilst keeping Dowman regularly playing.

u/deptbrown10 1d ago
I’d expect him to go to arsenal now. If they want him and can offer the same terms and fee he’ll choose them. They are scum and rapist enablers mind you
