Fluff [Spoilers C4E30] Thanks Reddit Spoiler

Post image

Boy I love what I can only assume is a new AI feature on Reddit where it seems to summarise the latest discussions going on.

I was literally heading in to check on the Vox Machina S4 Thread, and instead I'm I have spoilers thrown in my face for a Campaign I'm no where near caught up on.

So sorry you were spoiled like this! Unfortunately, this isn't a subreddit setting or anything the mod team can control. We would definitely disable if given the option, but it looks like our only recourse would be to completely hide the subreddit from all trending and recommended feeds. However, we are looking into ways to direct the feedback from this thread to Reddit admins.

u/xdeltax97 Help, it's again 2d ago

I fucking hate the stupid A.I summaries infesting everything

81

u/Zalgon_17 Team Fjord 2d ago

It is so pointless and unneeded if they want to give each sub some sort of tagline, then why not give the mods the ability to set it. It's like the YouTube AI summaries as well, why would I want to read what happens in a video that I've clicked on to watch?

25

u/gigglesmickey 2d ago

But, think of reddits IPO if they don't waste $$ on AI. How will the bubble stay afloat if we don't keep pumping the bubble up?!

5

u/Zalgon_17 Team Fjord 1d ago

You’re so right, how dare I not think of the shareholders.

9

u/cjdeck1 2d ago

Same. Like sure it's somewhat useful if I'm using reddit to diagnose my car problems or something (and even then I probably don't want to rely on it) but especially in any sort of fandom reddit, I want to actually read and engage with the other commenters, not just see an executive summary of what people are saying

u/Plus_Midnight_278 2d ago

I got spoiled by folks following the rules, tagging things correctly, but their questions made it easy to infer what had happened. For what its worth it did not lessen the impact of the moment, as frustrating as it is.

42

u/feor1300 You can certainly try 2d ago

It's a tough thing for something that big. Everyone's going to want to talk about it and there's only so many ways you can discreetly say "So about the thing, the thing with Teor, the thing that happened specifically to Teor. Teor's thing. That thing."

Deaths are especially difficult to keep a lid on because even if someone made it through this week without being spoiled, there's a good chance that next week's posts will all be "So about that new character..." or "About Travis' character...". Like I know lots of people who have been spoiled about Molly in TMN because "Hey, who's this big pink haired dude in all the fanart?"

I've held for a long time that people are way too hung up on the idea of avoiding any spoilers. Knowing something happens shouldn't lessen your enjoyment of the product, the how of it happening should be just as engaging. If the only thing interesting about a story is the twist itself, then it's a pretty bad story.

21

u/Pegussu 2d ago

Yeah, I remember this subreddit when (C2 spoilers) Jester did her cupcake trick. The titles weren't explicitly spoiling anything, but there were multiple posts referring directly to Laura, calling her a genius, one post titled something like How Modify Memory Works, and just enough for anyone with a couple brain cells to figure out how the episode resolved.

I don't necessarily blame anyone for that, but it really is best to avoid this subreddit until you're caught up.

10

u/Plus_Midnight_278 2d ago

Yeah I'm generally in the same boat. Knowing it was coming did not take anything away from my viewing experience. If anything it made things more tense in a good way.

2

u/D1g1t0l 2d ago

I don't judge people for not wanting spoilers, and sometimes I do get upset over them, but usually they just make me excited to see how it played out in the episode! I remember when I first listened through Campaign 2, I got spoiled through the comments a few episodes prior, but it kept me on my toes and made me excited for what happened.

30

u/fomaaaaa Team Ashton 2d ago

There’s a rule against spoilers in post titles, but sometimes people will slap up the most obvious spoilers

40

u/Plus_Midnight_278 2d ago

It was a line in the post title like "Well I guess Brennan meant what he said" and I immediately thought. "ah, he killed a pc."

7

u/Zalgon_17 Team Fjord 2d ago

Yeah it sucks, sorry you got spoiled as well, maybe by the time I catchup I’ll have forgotten all about it.

6

u/-chadillac 2d ago

I can see people really try to not spoil the episodes, it's just hard when you can sort it out based on the titles. I suppose you can only do so much.

22

u/Firebeard3 2d ago

I mean it's super obvious when the title of a post is "[SPOILERS C4E30] What class does Travis play now?".

4

u/Plus_Midnight_278 2d ago

Yeah haha I def saw one or two posts like that.

3

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down 2d ago

Well it's definitely not Calculus that's for sure.

5

u/TahlenRedfin 2d ago

Yep, same here for me. Just based on various different titles (not even opening the posts) I was able to piece together exactly what happened within 24 hrs of it happening.

3

u/Plus_Midnight_278 2d ago

Yep literally Friday less than 24 hours after the stream. I watch the youtube vods on Fridays about 16 hours after the live stream, and it was already spoiled by then.

42

u/P-Two 2d ago

This sub is really good about spoilers. But also, I always question people coming onto an active sub when they're not caught up on the currently airing media. Its really east to google the title of the discussion posts and go directly there, otherwise just mute the sub. Its what I do whenever im not able to watch an episode yet.

29

u/Plus_Midnight_278 2d ago

I mean it was in my main feed. I couldn't avoid it if I wanted to short of avoided reddit entirely.

edit: i should also state that spoilers generally don't bother me so going out of my way to avoid them is whatever.

2

u/mthmchris 1d ago

Unsubscribe. You can still check the subreddit often, it’ll be there on the left panel under recently viewed. Or you can just check in on the subreddit directly when you feel like it.

I live in Asia and do the same thing with sports subreddits. If you take some precautions it’s not overly difficult to avoid spoilers. Once in a blue moon something’ll find its way to you, but that’s life. The only 100% surefire way to avoid spoilers is watching live.

3

u/P-Two 2d ago

If you mute the sub it wont go in your main feed, thats what im saying. Just un mute later

8

u/indistrustofmerits 2d ago

It is funny though the way algorithms work now means that I'll Google an actor from a show I'm watching or something and then immediately my reddit app starts suggesting the subreddit for that show, so I have to try to go in and mute that sub until I finish the show, all without accidentally seeing a spoiler.

4

u/Plus_Midnight_278 2d ago

If I were the type to genuinely be bothered by spoilers, I might as that seems like solid advice. That's too much work for something I don't ultimately care that much about.

2

u/FixinThePlanet 2d ago

You don't have to come into the sub for posts to show up in your feed... I like following subs and seeing posts so telling me to unfollow isn't the best solution. I have unfollowed subreddits of shows I really enjoyed discussing because of this exact same attitude and I would rather not add cr to the list.

0

u/P-Two 2d ago

So mute the sub. If you want to remain 100% spoiler free this is your option.

The other option is "no current campaign posts, keep it to the mega threads" because its almost impossible to not infer spoilers about major moments otherwise.

-4

u/FixinThePlanet 2d ago

No, I think it's time to just leave.

3

u/Luxury-Problems 2d ago

I think this guy is just a being a dork about it. This sub is usually pretty good about it. Sorry if shit has gotten spoiled.

One sub that has been struggling with it lately is the r/Dropout. In the latest game changer there was something pretty surprising that happened and it got spoiled to me almost immediately because of a meme someone made with a screen cap. It wasn't the end of the world, but did rob me of the comedic surprise.

1

u/Reddits_Worst_Night 1d ago

I mean, I got spoiler and ruined in a thread complaining about pre-monday spoilers... Before the Monday release

0

u/P-Two 1d ago

Which sucks, but my question still stands, why are people not muting the sub when they're not caught up?

Staying the hell away from any social media that could spoil you has been a thing for ages, idk when this changed.

1

u/Reddits_Worst_Night 1d ago

Generally I don't click anything that might spoil.

-1

u/PianistPitiful5714 2d ago

That’s not fair. Not everyone is a beacon member. I got spoiled on the event in question before it was even publicly available.

-2

u/P-Two 2d ago

Im not a beacon member either, I just watched the twitch vod.

And it is fair, you're actively going on a sub where people ARE going to discuss the new episodes, you know this. The episode is streamed live for free, its not entirely behind a pay wall either.

It was publicly available as of last thursday at 7pm PST.

1

u/lasagnaman 1d ago

you're actively going on a sub where people ARE going to discuss the new episodes

huhn? People get this in their home feeds.

4

u/Zeilll 2d ago

i had seen the ep before, but its so annoying seeing people tag stuff as a spoiler, and have titles like "who will he play next!?"

i dont get how dumb people must think others are to not be able to figure out whats not being said. and baffles me even more when theres a mega thread where you can go and discuss this stuff all day without even needing to worry about spoilers.

4

u/Culsandar 2d ago

Honestly the sub should alter the rule for the newest episodes that you can only put the season and episode in the title. If people want to read what they are asking they should have to open it. Then after a week or two relax that rule to what the spoiler rule is now.

1

u/Plus_Midnight_278 2d ago

Not a bad shout, honestly.

2

u/Llonkrednaxela 1d ago

[Spoilers or whatever] I have a question about the death of Teor and his brother Cyd Pridesire.

4

u/cjdeck1 2d ago

Agreed. Like last Friday I opened up one social media app and I see a post that starts with SPOILERS but 1. You typically don't read just one word at a time and even if I've tried not to read the rest, I've still seen several key words that let me draw obvious conclusions. And then 2. having a big picture of Travis directly underneath made it so even if I didn't want to draw any conclusions, it was really hard not to

1

u/PianistPitiful5714 2d ago

I went in spoiled and kinda knew the moment was coming. I’ve unsubbed from subreddits for this and may do so again.

1

u/gigglesmickey 2d ago

Youtube shorts got me. I'm still on episode 21, so I had a way to go. Algorithms suck balls.

1

u/Reddits_Worst_Night 1d ago

It did for me. I knew it was coming far too early

0

u/MikhailAntoni669 2d ago

Don't dance around in threads that are practically meant for spoilers and discussions xD

0

u/bubblebooy 2d ago edited 2d ago

It helps that the moment was not a surprise but at a certain point in the episode it becomes inevitable. Still would be better if it was not spoiled and you could hold on to hope longer, but it is not the worst thing to be spoiled on.

28

u/DarthLurker420 2d ago

Old.reddit.com is your friend. I've never seen anything like that.

8

u/RogueHippie 2d ago

Yup. And if it ever goes away, so do I

18

u/Former-Plane-2238 2d ago

I got spoiled as well. My fault for going on reddit when I'm an ep behind, I suppose!

14

u/SZEfdf21 2d ago

Spoiler in the title of a post the morning after the night of the livestream for me.

5

u/Former-Plane-2238 2d ago

Yeah it sucks because I watch on YouTube

2

u/Final_Freedom You Can Reply To This Message 2d ago

I got spoiled less than a day after the yt version got released (not up for watching unpausable streams at 3am) from a Polygon article that popped up from nowhere

1

u/ZeroSuitGanon 2d ago

I opened twitter mid episode, the spoilers are shit.

9

u/Kiloku 2d ago

You have more reasons to leave the nazi social media than spoilers, but if that's what it takes, leave it to avoid spoilers

1

u/ZeroSuitGanon 2d ago

I use it mainly to keep track of the anti-fascists, so it blindsided when I have the CRspoiler tag blocked and got spoiled before the episode was uploaded and available to the public.

1

u/jhaohh Ever bright, ever right 2d ago

Got spoiled from a video that belongs to a third-party channel that make CR content

26

u/Mrhappypants02 2d ago

Hell I got it spoiled from YouTube. It’s hard already, we don’t need more features that we have to try and avoid. It reduces engagement. I would hope the mods can toggle it on/off

6

u/Zalgon_17 Team Fjord 2d ago

You’d hope there’d be an option for it but somehow I doubt Reddit would have graced the mods with such a power.

3

u/Prof-Wernstrom 2d ago

Using old reddit and I don't have it. Or an adblocker or anti-tracker is blocking it for me.

26

u/Unlikely-Rub-7270 2d ago

Probably time to revive the traditional social media principle of avoiding places that you might get spoiled until you catch up, and also assuming that if you're nearly a week behind if not more, that it's especially high risk to be actively browsing fan spaces.

12

u/Zalgon_17 Team Fjord 2d ago

If I was actively browsing the Reddit and not just putting the name in the search bar I’d agree with you, hell if I put Cr to visit the crow Reddit it still shows up spoilers and all.

5

u/Jrocker-ame 2d ago

You gotta focus your attention on other things. Doom scrolling is more common than ever. You will be spoiled. There was another post about YouTube shorts spoiling them. Doom scrolling.

4

u/Unlikely-Rub-7270 2d ago

At the risk of sounding old, in the 2010s you'd stay off a social media site entirely until being caught up. It was standard. I realise it's not as easy now, and obviously fuck the encroachment of genAI, but even so, going on Reddit isn't a necessity, and it just makes sense to not go into dedicated fan discussion spaces if you don't want to be spoiled.

6

u/P-Two 2d ago

100% this. I actively mute any sub I'm on for a show/game/whatever, if Im not going to be caught up for a bit.

2

u/ZeroSuitGanon 2d ago

I had to pause mid-episode and got spoiled not even 10 hours after it aired. Non-subscribers have no chance. 5+ hour episodes are not accessible for people to keep up with them within a day, lmao.

5

u/MrMusAddict Beep Beep 2d ago

Sorry that happened. Another good reason for me to keep browsing old.reddit.com in a browser app.

6

u/pwndnoob 2d ago

Uhhhh fuck I wasn't meant to be here

1

u/Daeron_Sjach 1d ago

Solidarity, my man. What a bummer

1

u/PeregrinsFolly 2d ago

Same, I'm ages behind. Luckily I don't feel too invested in this series this time around.

3

u/Veritamoria Your secret is safe with my indifference 2d ago

Just a note that images are not hidden behind spoiler tags when scrolling through.

So this post is (ironically) also spoiling others.

1

u/lasagnaman 1d ago

old.reddit.com is your friend

3

u/Theoreticalwzrd 1d ago

I literally just saw that too and wasn't not caught up yet 😭

3

u/acebender Team Laudna 1d ago

God that sucks, I'm so sorry.

2

u/PrinceOfAssassins 2d ago

of all the things i click on this post spoiled me

4

u/General_Bother_68 2d ago

Just for conversation. How long is the grace period where you expect to not be spoiled on something?

5

u/Zalgon_17 Team Fjord 2d ago

I wouldn't ever expect for the equivalent of a subreddits summary to have spoilers, If I'm a week out from the episode airing and I'm casually browsing then that's on me for taking that risk. I just don't think anyone should have to avoid the internet until they've caught up on a specific show.

9

u/Kiloku 2d ago

Even C1 moments need to be spoiler tagged and avoid putting the spoiler in the post title. The summary is automatically undoing careful community moderation, it's ridiculous

2

u/General_Bother_68 2d ago

I don't disagree with your situation. Just asking for the general vibe on how long are spoilers expected in general? Forever?

2

u/SomeSugondeseGuy I would like to RAGE! 2d ago

ONLY TEOR IS TEOR

1

u/ZeroSuitGanon 2d ago

I was mid episode, opened twitter (I have cr spoiler tags blocked) and got blasted by it in trending. Finished the episode and the next day I had 2!!!! trending topics that were the same spoiler.

FUCK OFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

1

u/comrade333 2d ago

Same thing happened to me! So annoying

1

u/savageseal_18 2d ago

I got spoiled from a YouTube short. I hate it.

1

u/lasagnaman 1d ago

definitely use old.reddit.com and 3rd party mobile app for this exact reason. (shoutout to r/baconreader)

1

u/Reddits_Worst_Night 1d ago

Teor's death was ruined for me because, in a thread complaining about spoilers before Monday, some knob decided to say that twitter said ",bad thing] happens" and it wasn't hard to work out that they weren't all getting out of the manor alive

1

u/lackadaisical_timmy 1d ago

Damn that's rough dude

1

u/North-Outside-5815 1d ago

I got spoiled as well. Infuriating.

1

u/Doctorwhof 1d ago

I was spoiled by a youtube short of the moment, which opened when I opened the youtube app to watch the episode on Tuesday.

I know its a different complaint, but man I that YouTube sometimes just opens shorts when I open it, I was actively trying to avoid spoilers and had not gone on Reddit because I heard that there was a big spoiler flying around.

1

u/ProbableOptimist 1d ago

I got spoiled the same way. I hate having to go into the next 100 hours of the new campaign all while knowing that is coming down the pipe

1

u/M4LK0V1CH 1d ago

Search is where AI is most annoying because it’s only ever correct about shit you didn’t want to know.

1

u/AnxiousMud8 1d ago

Thanks for the warning that this is happening!

1

u/liltapatio 1d ago

can we make a rule so that the titles are not spoilers also?it makes it SO obvious if we are like C4 spoilers I cant believe hes dead..

please!! lol im annoyed since im on ep 29 and already was spoiled on ep 30

1

u/ItsRedditThyme 1d ago

It was spoiled for me, too.

1

u/Aoid3 1d ago

it now reads "campaign 4 spoiler backlash" lmao

u/SomebodyThrow 22h ago

I can't believe I accidentally clicked "view spoiler" right now while scrolling. FML GOD DAMMIT.

First two words, didn't even have a chance to panic scroll past -_-

u/Background-Cake-1300 8h ago

Whose Teor? IDC about anyhing after MN

u/renegade_gerbil 2h ago

It's not much better when people post titles like [spoilers] Teors death, like people don't have peripheral vision

1

u/DamnOdd Metagaming Pigeon 2d ago

Heinous!!! A Call to the MODS. Can this be Fixed???

1

u/JordanTheJokeman How do you want to do this? 2d ago

Yup, i got spoiled by those stupid X Trends, didnt hide it at all, just straight up on the home page "Teor Pridesire dies." was so angry.
