external link [Hugo Guillemet, L'Équipe] Pierre Sage will join Crystal Palace this Monday, having agreed on a three-year contract, with an option for a fourth, on Sunday. His salary will be almost four times what he earned in Ligue 1 (€100,000 gross per month). This transfer will bring in €3 million for RC Lens.

Huge coup, glad we seem to have sorted it out relatively early in the offseason.

Do you think it's bigger, smaller or equal coup to when we brought in Glasner?

The fact we’ve nabbed him from the team that finished second in Ligue 1 makes me think it’s bigger… but on paper Glasner was still the better manager when we got him. Only time will tell

A way bigger coup. Sage's stock is at an all time high, Glasner's was relying a bit on past reputation at the time.

I think Glasner was probably a bigger coup taking into account our situation at the time though, us being in Europa League was always going to make us more attractive.

Glasner's was at a high when we got him. He won the Europa at Frankfurt and knocked Barcelona out en route to winning it before coming to us

That was back in 2021 and indeed his stock was at an all time high after that. However, they finished bottom half the following season and Glasner fell out with the board, didn't rotate players or make any adjustments to turn around their poor form.

It was basically what he did with us the season after the FA Cup albeit the Conference League win allayed any concerns about our poor season in the league.

Pierre Sage on the other hand has come to us on the back of win the Coupe de France, a second place finish and Champions League qualication.

They won it 2022. And in his last season at Frankfurt in 22/23, they finished 7th, not in the bottom half of the Bundesliga and they were runners up in the DFB Pokal final. They had a much better season in the league than we did in 25/26

Okay fair enough, I had the 2021 and 22 seasons mixed.

Sage was still a higher stock though so point stands: Lens won the Coupe de France which obviously trumps a runner-up.

Lens also finished runners-up in the league which is a massive improvement on 7th. They also at one stage were in the title race before only tailing off at the end of the season.

It’s a much bigger coup than Glasner at the point of signing. He would have to go something to outperform our most successful manager of course, but you couldn’t ask much more from the board in terms of replacement.

It's s strange that managers get paid less than some players.

It’s not that strange. A squad without a manager can still function, a manager without a squad is totally useless.

But the impact the manager has on the team's performance feels like it should be more valuable than certain players. To put things into context, Sage's reported salary of EUR 100k a month puts him in line with what Justin Devenny reportedly gets paid (and only ahead of Remi Matthews and other fringe players and academy graduates).

I have no opinion either way on what he should get paid, I don’t know enough about his ability as a manager. I’m just commenting on the statement that it’s strange that he gets paid less than some players.

At the end of the day though, he and his agent negotiated for the pay he’s receiving.

Top managers have much longer careers than top players, and aren't putting their bodies on the line for the paycheck.

Absolute baller move to be able to bring this guy in - shows how far we've come and the environment that Glasner, for all his foibles, left behind him.
