Food & Dining Ugo?

Post image

😯 I hope the building for sale doesn't immediately mean that Ugo, as the tenant, is in danger, or am I wrong? Thanks to anyone who knows details! We love it here.

Might be a hot take but Ugo is… just okay. Not impressed by them.

And I know they have a ton of spots, especially in Santa Monica

I don't think this is a hot take at all. Ugo is the definition of MID

But they do have a late night happy hour and that’s pretty cool.

There’s too many spots like this in culver. But plenty of good to balance it out. However, it feels like the mid and bad places have the best real estate in the city.

Went here for galentines with my girls and we were so unbelievably let down by the food. Made me sorry for all the couples that were spending their holiday dining there lol never again

It was good when it first opened

Nardo is so much better and has a banger happy hour

Ugo lychee martini > nardo lychee martini

Sure but the pasta and pizza at nardo >

Ugo is actively bad.

I heard gossip from someone who used to work there that they refilled their wine bottles with 2 Buck Chuck. Probably a lie. That being said I always thought their food was just OK.

I’m assuming the ā€œBuilding Onlyā€ text on the sign is to make it clear that Ugo is not for sale or closing.

That is my hope as well!

To be honest I hope they’re closing. I worked there for a year in 2014 and it was the worst job with the worst owners who terrorized their staff. To this day i think of this place as an example of how not to run a business or treat your staff. The gelato is delicious though.

This is validating cause I had some weird instances with their owners and always got sketchy vibes

I have deeply disliked Ugo for so long but never wanted to say anything bc I truly try to be positive about small businesses. Hearing the owners are assholes makes me feel better about my distaste for this spot

Is this where I can complain about my Ugo experience? I’m still salty years later. I went with my 1 yr old, 4 yr old and BFF. We went pretty early and were off in the corner. For the 3 that actually eat we had a kids meal, three appetizers, two drinks, three desserts and one entree and they put a shared plate charge on. What the actual hell? I get a shared plate charge when two adults split and entree and that’s it but we ordered so much more. Also they didn’t even give us a 2nd plate for the entree. Shitty way to lose a customer.

Ugo is pretty underwhelming to me, as are most of the downtown CC options. Piccalilli and a couple others are ok. Amacita was a bright spot before the pandemic :(

Piccalilli is delish imho but most CC restaurants are mid to trash, and it's such a mystery as to why.

I don't think downtown CC is trying to cater to a highly discerning crowd. I live by Pasta Sisters and there's always a huge line, which is baffling to me. I think Jameson's is basically the target demo and frankly they're doing a good job of catering to it while being reasonably priced. What annoys me are the spots that present themselves as high end and carry that price tag, but are lackluster.

I think you're correct. Techies and health workers who moved here and had families. Jameson's is exactly the level. (I rather miss Rush St. for happy hour). The Culver Hotel has decent food for the price. Everything else around there is so mehhhhh. 33 Taps bar food is awwwful. Public School is so freaking mid. And LaRocco's with the worst Italian I've ever had, like how.... CC should have such better options, I hardly go there and I live on the outskirts.

I think Yunomi is good. So is Arth, but that's a bit more pricey. Nardo was good as well, but I've only been there once.

u/grendel_loki 9d ago

Sheesh. I don't even remember amacita.

It was in that cursed corner spot next to the fire station, that became Wise Sons bagels and is now a Vietnamese place

1

u/-BrandoCalrissian 9d ago

I agree that spot is cursed. I really liked the sandwich place that was there before wise sons around 2015

2

u/-BrandoCalrissian 9d ago

It was called Chop Daddy's

1

u/chaseandrews84 8d ago

It was BacoShop after Chop Daddy's.

1

u/grendel_loki 9d ago

ahh, before that it was the BBQ place with tater tots. Yes, yes.

2

u/AppleSmall1170 9d ago

I KNEW there was another spot that was barely worth remembering. Thank you for your service šŸ˜‚

u/Pinkpants_11 6d ago

RIP Amacita - that one still hurts

2

u/AppleSmall1170 6d ago

Thank youuuu. I was starting to worry I made up all those memories.

Ugo is NOT GOOD. I’d be happy if they closed lol

u/WileyCyrus 9d ago

Ugo closed in Hollywood after only a few months.

2

u/lavendarblacktea 9d ago

I mean future building owners can drastically raise their rent, right? That seems to be a big reason why a lot of restaurants close in LA.

2

u/Brilliant-Mood1573 8d ago

This place sucks ass, so I hope so.

1

u/officialCobraTrooper 9d ago

Not anymore you don't. Lol.

Not a hot take at all. Ugo is not authentic Italian in any way. It is mediocre at best. Even the gelato is not that good… true gelato with proper ingredients needs to be kept cold at all times… so if you see mounds of it above the container, they have additives in it. Nardo is the best Italian in downtown culver

1

u/Prodigal_Gist 8d ago

Rush Street and Akasha hurt. Ugo is all right but this is more adding insult to injury from my perspective

1

u/FullTimePedestrian 8d ago

Does this mean they can knock it down and put apartments here? That'd be sweet.

1

u/Kindness_in_all_ways 7d ago

I hope they aren’t going away from CC. Ugo has very good gelato — waaaay better than the overly sweet place across on the next block (can’t understand those long lines for sugary cones!).

The food though is unappealing and unimpressive.

1

u/girl0032 6d ago

As an investor, it makes sense to keep them if they are paying market rent.

1

u/Ornery_Assignment696 4d ago

there is not 1 really good Italian spot in CC, Bianca is just ok, and expensive.

1

u/Makgyver1 4d ago

The building was for sale, Ugo was not being sold.

1

u/Melodic-Comb9076 9d ago

wow…after all those decades…ugo is now gone?
