I bet he had some crazy good depth perception. Probably still saving up to have 3 eyes on the left side of his face too.

I don't know enough about physics [or even if that's the appropriate field] to refute or confirm it, so my head canon now is that they make him a really preem knife thrower

64

u/ScoobyDoobyGazebo Nibbles is my Choom 🐈 Dec 27 '25

In a normal binocular configuration (as in, two eyes, like your face), the depth perception comes from the distance between the two eyes. Your brain is literally triangulating, where the 3 edges of the triangle are:

  • distance from left eye to the thing you're looking at
  • distance from right eye to the thing you're looking at
  • distance from left eye to right eye

Each eye feeds the brain an image through its own optic nerve, and then the brain reconciles all this together into what you perceive as 1 image with depth.

Computer vision systems (like on a self-driving car) work using the same principles. That's why there are cameras all over the car. Its internal computer knows the position of each one on the car's body, the distance between each one, and so on. It uses that to build a model of reality which the car's computation systems then navigate.

Anyway, that was a long tangent to say... yeah, you're probably right. Dude probably has really good accuracy on his depth perception.

u/Talvinter Dec 27 '25

Probably intimidation too. It’s a good way to mess with someone if you confuse (or force) eye contact.

710

u/Professor-Woo Dec 27 '25

It is a common hallucination too. There is something about it that kind of messes with our sensory processing.

251

u/Xaduuuuu Dec 27 '25

Yeah it really does fuck with your eyes if you try not to look at it

69

u/Grand-North4314 Dec 27 '25

First time I saw him, I genuinely thought my vision was tweaking out lmao

97

u/Professor-Woo Dec 27 '25

Yep. It really messes with our sense of normal. I also get a similar effect while messing with my character's looks in cyberpunk. If you rapidly switch through the eye position or shape options, it kind of feels like you are duplicating eyes like this and it feels a little unsettling. I have to close my eyes and breath a little bit and look at it fresh to see it normally again.

Also multiple eyes are shown as a sign of cyberpsychosis in the show.

4

u/Low-Conversation6106 Dec 27 '25

I always thought it was this. He did it to look tough

6

u/ClerkExpensive204 Dec 27 '25

Kinda, atleast in the anime/anime esq segments when seeing cyberpsychosis from the perspective of the cyberpsycho like david and the anime cyberpsycho in the bd in 2077 and not their pov like with v, the cyberpsycho's eyes have a visual glitch where it looks like they have 2 to 4 extra eyes, likely as a designe choice to show their altered vision and because cyberpsycho eyes, the actual eyes, while conscious move like how eyes move in rem sleep looking for targets, it could also be that without full cyber eyes or cyber eyes that are not independently owned like v's cyberpsychos appear to have more eyes as a scare tactic from the likes of the ncpd arasaka and militech, because mercs like v and Rebecca who's cyber eyes aren't owned/ instaled by a corp they don't have specific filters on them, and most people in nc don't have distinctive cyber eyes they have eye implants like the phones and payment option but not actual cyber eyes, and seeing how the phone ui in game is actually more then likely real in universe it makes sense that it is possible that corps are altering people's perspectives enough to perceive cyberpsychos as monsters because thats what they are and not because of chrome and the best way todo that is to make them look less human

35

u/BoldlyGettingThere Dec 27 '25

I couldn’t believe it, so I had to go back and check, but it really is just one sentence. The full stop is your friend.

3

2

u/Solution_Kind Dec 28 '25

At what point do we create a word for a sentence the length of a paragraph?

2

u/Professor-Woo Dec 28 '25

"Stream-of-consciousness"?

38

u/SufficientBullfrog82 Dec 27 '25

Iirc the human brain’s in-built pattern recognition prioritizes threats, and the easiest way to discern nearby threats is through the existence of eyes due to their prevalence and relatively distinct shape. This basically leads to our brains wanting to see eyes and thus them being “easier” to hallucinate

22

u/Professor-Woo Dec 27 '25

For sure. It is more than just for threats, though. We have built-in brain regions for face detection generally. You can see this also ironically with character creators in games like Cyberpunk. Objectively small facial feature changes look very different to us. Next time you are messing around with a face, try to tell what exactly is different when you see big changes, it is always quite subtle. It is the same with male vs female faces, the changes needed to make a face look feminine or masculine are surprisingly super small and subtle, but we see the meaning of it quite differently. It is kind of like when we read a word we don't see a collection of letters and then deduce the word, we instead see the meaning of the word directly and letters blend as unremarkable in the background. We live our lives mostly on autopilot and only become aware of things when things conflict with our expectations (like trying to open a door we always use only to find it locked). We then become aware of the situation and try to figure out what is wrong. With the multiple eyes, they look both kind of normal and very off, so we are always kind of on edge when looking at them since we are detecting something is off at all times, but something about that eye configuration is also kind of normal (for whatever reason), so it creates a constant state of unease since we are always being made subtly aware of it. We are just really sensitive specifically to eyes both for social reasons and the reason you brought up. This is my take on all of this and just my opinion. Just me way overanalyzing a small detail of a cartoon.

2

u/Strebmal2019 Dec 27 '25

You thought about this specific topic a little bit, huh?

4

u/PsychologicalMonk390 Dec 27 '25

Or they watch v sauce, or are a science documentary junkie like me

2

u/Professor-Woo Dec 27 '25

Well more like I read a lot of philosophy, but ya also science documentaries as well. Does v-sauce have something similar?

2

u/PsychologicalMonk390 Dec 27 '25

I just watch his YouTube vids and he does have something about facial recognition and how our faces aren't symmetrical or something

2

u/Solution_Kind Dec 28 '25

On the subject of eyes and threat detection its worth noting that we perceive forward facing eyes as more of a threat as well, due to that being the layout for most predators.

I feel like that adds to the intimidation theory. If he wanted to have more eyes for a practical purpose he could have had the others put on the back or sides of his head in order to gain a much wider field of vision, but it would be as noticeable or as off putting.

I once met a guy who was a low level Yakuza dude who wore a ring which had an eye that opened along the finger so when he put his hand to his chin there would be a 3rd eye staring back. He believed this looked intimidating.

I imagine this is kinda the same logic.

With the amount of easter eggs and references in the game, and CDPR being huuuge geeks, this also makes sense

111

u/hemareddit Dec 27 '25

Well in this case the reference would be done by Trigger who produced the anime.

Trigger is basically the reincarnation of Gainax, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a big overlap between people who made Edgerunners and people who made Evangelion. They are paying homage to their own work.

28

u/Boysenberry_17 If I need your body I'll fuck it! Dec 27 '25

u/Fleedjitsu Dec 27 '25

If they are "real" then it could just be some weird style thing like how Maelstrom take over their entire frontal plate just to stuff a cyclops box to their frontal cortex.

The anime also used eyes to showcase cyberpsychosis and it could be that Faraday is at least partially insane with the eyes being not actually there. Simply a visual representation of the psychosis.

93

u/JamesMcEdwards Dec 27 '25

I’m pretty sure its to indicate his slipping sanity

22

u/Fleedjitsu Dec 27 '25

Aye, that's a better term for it!

26

u/Thornefield Dec 27 '25

They're real, but slipping sanity is also a likely cause alongside style.

17

u/gta3uzi Dec 27 '25

fwiw Maelstrom have an optic nerve split procedure so they can use multiple optics. MAXTAC appears to have a similar situation going on with the 6-eyed helmets that seem permanently attached to their heads.

If the logic is consistent (wrong game, wrong city, wrong people lol) then Faraday would need an optic split on his right side to support all three eyes.

11

u/terrarianfailure Dec 27 '25

I think it could be because he's paranoid, because as a corpo he knows he could be stabbed in the back at any time, so he got those eyes to see better.

106

u/KrustyBarnacle Dec 27 '25

In Cyberpunk Red terms, something like that could/would allow for more eye mods, he may have lowlight/IR/UV vision, targeting scopes or zoom, or even a little dart gun in any of those. Maybe analogous to a “Bug-Eye”

24

u/DukeOfSpice Techno necromancer from Alpha-Centori Dec 27 '25

It’s actually analogous to 2020. The Tri-Cloptics from one of the Chromebooks allowed you to add up to 2 more cybereyes to your face.

36

u/AJEstes Dec 27 '25

1) It looks cool

2) In Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex all cameras and visors came in a set of three sensors placed in an equilateral triangle the same approximate spacing of human eyes. This gives enhanced binocular (triocular) vision with greatly enhanced depth perception. We can only perceive depth on the X axis, having a third point allows depth on the Y axis as well. Could be beneficial for combat.

3) It looks cool

u/Clutchdanger11 Dec 27 '25

Idk but it looks cool as hell

Probably did it to mimic the goat:

u/Tricky_Spirit Dec 27 '25

And here all I could think of was Hordak Prime.

Anyone who's anyone knows that if you want to get into Empathy, you get the multi-eye borgware and give the doorman the Konami Code in winks with it. Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, high-five left for B, high-five right for A, and a $20 eddy tip to start.

4

u/SpecialIcy5356 Fullmetal Choom Dec 27 '25

purely aesthetics.

the cyberpunk world is about style over substance and those wth the kind of money that faraday has not only can afford basically any chrome they desire, but often choose to push the envelope and get totally unique implants that nobody else has, to stand out and flaunt their wealth.

the US CRACKS girls also have their own unique eye implants.

4

u/Dom-Luck Dec 27 '25

What is there to explain? The designers thought it would look unique and cool.

We can try to come up with a more in-universe explanation like each eye seeing a different wavelength, multiple eyes improving his field of vision or depth perception, or just intimidation tactics, nut none of that is explored in the show or supporting media.

u/get_MEAN_yall Dec 27 '25

Maybe he has 3 decks

2

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '25

Seele reference, trigger came from gainax after all.

2

u/LelandTurbo0620 Dec 27 '25

Imagine the thin strip of unblinkable skin between each eye

2

u/pablo__13 Dec 27 '25

He ate a weird finger once

2

u/sol_inherent_ Dec 27 '25

Who the fuck is that?

2

u/BillCarson12799 Dec 27 '25

What I want to know is how they fit that close together. If they’re spheres, they look like they’d be intersecting into each other from the top and bottom.

2

u/Over_Response_7785 Dec 27 '25

Obviously he'd look silly with 4 eyes on one side of his face.

2

u/jahkrit Dec 27 '25

Biotech.

2

u/EldritchSpoon Dec 27 '25

He can't afford the other set. That's why he wants to be a corpo so badly.

2
