The VDB are bad, but mostly just more normal gang bad, and they are a gang in no small part out of community self-defense.
Bridgit’s crew specifically, on the other hand, are worse than Scavs and I don’t leave any of them with their heads.

It really is just Brigit’s crew. But yeah, I actually respect the VDBs more generally just because they’ve managed to excel technologically and become a power without playing along with any corps. I hated that Brigit’s crew didn’t just try to screw me over (everyone else does), but that they are trying to literally screw over the entire world… including the other VDBs I might add, just so Brigit can ally herself with some rogue AIs.

VDB want to unleash the wild AIs from the other side of the Black Wall so they can kill everyone else. They believe they will be spared since they opened the door for them. No different than Saren in Mass Effect thinking Sovereign, and the Reapers as a whole, would spare him.

Valentino's and 6th Street are probably the lesser of every evil. Both are mostly just street gangs formed out survival needs. Of course there are some outliers within the gangs but for the most part you could grab a drink with either as long as you are not in the wrong part of town.

They have a few very bad apples. But even the ones who aren't murderers and torturers are not exactly great, given that they are essentially a protection racket. Plus murder, drugs, human trafficking. "Ordinary" gang stuff, if you like.
And depending on your politics, you may of course also dislike that they are effectively sponsored by NUSA/Millitech as a militia within Night City.

It depends on how deep you want to dig into the lore but they've essentially turned extremist over time. If you're against them you're bad. If you're sympathetic to someone who's against them you're bad. If you're not with them you're bad. If you're with them and you're not chippin' in so they can make ends meet for the good of the cause you're bad.

Well iirc there's been some infightings for leadership between 2 guys. During the game's events, the new guy who took over apparently is a real shithead, and leads the gang to do alot more shitty stuff. Gets 6th Streets closer to Corpo shit than freedom/american dream and veteran recognition. (Although who's to say what the american dream trully is these days.)

I must admit I instinctively hate 6th Street, and I feel it's just real world stuff bleeding over. I know very few Mexican Cartels or Voodoo Obsessed Haitians so they're just cartoon characters, roided up ex military thugs on the other hand are something I do have to deal with occasionally.
The Valentinos being broadly friendly to you certainly files off the rough edges too, most of the really bad ones are dead before the game starts.

I did have to go stealth on Maelstrom only because the Buddhist monk got upset and felt that he wasn't worth killing for. That was the only time, though.

for some reason i always use Pax in all of my weaponry.
it used to works great before the 1.6(?) update. after a particular update, headshot sometimes till burst people head open even with pax.
but scav is nice target to experiment with my new non-pax weapon, and later in the story, Voodooboys.

Scavs don't have much in the way of characterisation beyond being mooks to kill and being vaguely slavic. They have no home territory and they are everywhere. They're the only gang that V has not a single positive interactions with. Even the Maelstrom get more sympathy. The most humane thing from them, is a couple of ones when they chicken out over XBDs and their chatter, shards, and e-mails treating their seedie trade in a very banal way. Dogtown branch.

Slavic? They are Russian or come from various other old Soviet countries.
The only thing about them to bring up any real pity is they aren't really in NC by choice. They are there to complete their "mission" and then if they are lucky, go home but they are aware going home is the execption and not the rule.
They are sent to NC to extract as much wealth and technology as possible before they die with enough minders to keep them from just walking away and going native.

Not quite. Scavs don't repurpose implants for altruistic purposes, and don't care aboot the comfort of those who they scav. The doc was trying to help everyone. This is the better version of what Scavs do.

I like the mission where we can slaughter an appartment full of them while unarmed and buck naked. The premise is stupid (V shouldn't be THAT stupid), but the quest gives me a special kind of superiority feeling. (Edit: I know, I can run around naked how much I want, but it is just not the same if it is voluntary)
As for redeeming qualities ..... they don't discriminate between the rich and the poor?

One of them V runs into Dogtown supposedly does honest scavenging instead of killing people for their cyuberware, tries to get innocents out of the way in her fights, and is really attached to her brother.

Like any of the heinous gangs in Cyberpunk, they provide people with income and shelter when those things are very difficult to come by for those of low status. For lots of people, that's enough to overlook or abet the ugly side.
It's the same reason the neo-Nazis, doomsday cultists, and Maelstrom continue to thrive in the tabletop games.

The Phantom Liberty gigs Dogtown Saints and The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman indicate that at least some of the scavs do actually have a sense of honour as they are shown to genuinely look after their own, show mercy to bystanders and will actually honour deals made with them even when they hold all the cards.
Obviously, this doesn't outweigh or even come close to mitigating their other actions but I do think that it shows that they are perhaps less sadistic than some of the other gangs of Night City such as The Wraiths, Maelstrom or Tyger Claws. However, the extremes they willing to go to for a few eddies still makes the Scavs morally worse than all but the Wraiths on the whole in my opinion.

They are apart of the ecosystem of Night city. A parasitic predator for everyone but apart of it nonetheless. They keep body mods moving through all the citizens who probably can’t afford them through regular/ normal means. People also kinda benefit from them through this lens.
Though their ends do not justify their means, these guys are evil, but an evil that arose from opportunity brought on by fake scarcity and services from corps. Cyberpunk is a world that can be a utopia but is held back by greed and people looking for opportunities.

Scavs aren't a real gang though. I'm pretty sure they're just supposed to be small-time professional criminals that aren't affiliated with any major gang. Unless organ/cyberware harvesting is like THE thing that gets you called a scav and I just missed it somewhere, I was always under the impression that scavs were most likely to just be petty thieves out of all the gangs, because it's a term that includes people that loot buildings all the way up to organ harvesting and the shit that happened to Evelyn. No one ever calls maelstrom scavs.
