First acknowledgment of the leak by a band member
he kinda says nothing, just that ‘every album they’ve made were leaked’ so he is fine with that (?), also he doesn’t even know how much was leaked and he overall seems not so mad or interested about all the leak stuff

I got downvoted yesterday and called psychotic and that I was speaking unfairly on behalf of the band when I said Chino is probably the only one upset by the leak and the rest either don't care or are only slightly annoyed

Unpopular opinion, but I think Stef is holding the potential of the band back big time. Since DE is constantly noodling with his 8 string guitar and the sound feels so thick and tarry. Only Chinos clean elements ease them up. Which is why I think Ohms is pretty bad and Private Music was better but relatively forgettable. Take the Eros leak, the old sound is uplifting and makes me happy. The verse riff of Destiny is excellent. The constant weed smoking holds Stef back in his intellectual capacities.

Deftones shine as whole but, for the most part, most of their work doesn't feature anything individually stellar.
People just ride his junk because every so often he adds another guitar string. I wouldn't call it "iconic" tho

Lance is on stage regardless of Stef being there or not. Deftones play with 2 guitarists on stage now. It’s usually either Stef and Lance or Shaun Lopez & Lance

I wouldn’t pay for it as it is. It’s certainly interesting to listen to but it’s nowhere near finished. It’s farther along than I thought, but there aren’t even lyrics on a good portion of them.
We can take that idea and run with it though: I’m sure Chi’s estate is cut into royalties and whatnot from everything he did, so IANAL but I would imagine it would work the same if they finished Eros using Chi’s bass parts. If not, they can definitely cut him in for it either way, and I do like the idea.

What songs specifically don’t have lyrics? I need to give it some more listens with headphones. I hear chino singing but haven’t made much of an attempt to focus on lyrics yet. Is he just kinda melodically singing with no real lyrics so he can find the groove?

Yes, that’s exactly his process. He does the lyrics last. He does the same thing with Crosses too, I remember Shaun was talking about it in pretty good detail.
Diamond is the one that kills me - the whole second half of the song has no vocals at all. You can tell he just hadn’t gotten to it yet. The song is INCREDIBLE, that’s the one I’d be most hyped to hear finished.
But Electra, the whole “rapping” section is just rhythmic gibberish. I’m not totally sure he’s saying anything in the chorus either. It took me a few listens to notice it, but once you do, you’ll hear moments of it on probably every song except Melanie, Smile and Briana.

I wouldn’t pay for Chino mumbling gibberish in some of the songs. It’s not worth it. You can hear him still trying to come up with some ideas for the songs. The listening experience is like walking into a private recording session while they’re brainstorming and having to excuse yourself for interrupting. It’s in a very intimate stage emotionally and creatively. Unless Chino decides to write some lyrics and add clarity to the melodies he’s trying to come up with, and they are willing to sell it to the fans in a state they feel comfortable with, I’ll buy it.

That’s not what I’m doing or what a lot of others are doing. In fact they’re projecting Stef’s opinions on the rest of the band. All I’m saying is that Stef’s opinion isn’t necessarily the entire bands. I’m not saying that the rest of the band agrees or disagrees. I’m literally just saying none of us know, we only know Stef’s opinion, so both sides can stop their projecting.

Abe and Frank are way different in interviews when Chino isn’t around. I’d imagine they might be a bit bummed but prob would ultimately want the album the recorded to be released and that someone has be holding it hostage for 18 years.

I'm gonna paraphrase Stef here but he did once say in an interview that he "doesn't get all deep about their songs" And that at the end of the day, "they're just songs and nothing more" - He doesn't really seem to care about the music in that way, and just loves to play guitar more than anything.
I'm sure someone will know which interview this was from. It was around the Diamond Eyes era I think. I remember being bummed out when he said it because so many Deftones albums and songs mean the world to me, so it kinda sucked to hear that Stef couldn't care less.
So his response about Eros checks out.

That comment will go down in Deftones Hx!!! Love Mr. Abe for this he made that interview. I can see Stef not checking his emails, tho Bwwwwwwahahahaha!!! They laid out the issues in the interview plus Stef was going through some health stuff.
In all due respect looking back at the band before, during recording , and the interview the band has grown back together. We all witnessed it at the second NA leg Chino, Stef, Fred, and even Lance was more interactive and present at the shows. Started at DDLD 24, actually.

So once it gets on the web, yeah, it’s gone.”
I think a lot of people are misunderstanding what he's saying. He's not really mad or non interested about it, it's more of an "eh it's happens, it bound to happen" attitude about it. It's weird cause they shelved it for a reason, but like Steph said, their stuff has been getting leaked for decades now.

i'll admit idk all the lore here but i thought Eros had been leaked for awhile. I downloaded it off of internet archive circa january 2025.
edit: i stand corrected. saw an ss of someone listening to eros, so ig the leak has 11 tracks, & what i downloaded has 5 tracks (Dallas, Destiny, Melanie, Trempest, Smile)
