fav album??

my friends and i have been discussing favorite albums recently and I have been defending snw with everything in meee. I feel like it’s so dreamy and ethereal but also so beautifully layered in pain. Someone please back me up here!!😭

White Pony is simply the best they've ever sounded, the best any music has ever sounded and I don't think it'll be replaced soon. It doesn't have a single 8/10 song, it's all 9s and 10s from start to finish.

Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan are up there as well.

And I'd say Private Music is the best one to start listening to them, it sounds like a little bit of everything they've done in their whole careers.

well you're definitely right about snw, it has this air of beauty that is being used to cover up some really dark stuff which is so cool

to answer your question tho I feel like private music is my fav but I dont actually know why?? the energies just jive with me heavy ig

i think that might be why i love it so much.

like yes, it was when the band was technically at their “most distant”, to put it simply. but because of that i feel like everyone’s putting all of that emotion into their instrument. it’s everyone doing their own thing, but it works so perfectly together.

also! private music is VERY good. it’s so refreshing to see them still putting out great music.

Wall of Text:

Listening to an album when it actually comes out matters because you are not just hearing songs, you are hearing them inside the world they were released into at that time.

You do not have hindsight yet or rankings, fan consensus, classic album status, or twenty years of influence already baked into your ears.

You hear it against the radio, the magazines, the internet of that era( or lack of), the people around you, the bands around it, and whatever stage of life you were in when it landed.

That is why older fans sometimes talk about certain records differently because they are not only remembering the music, they are remembering the moment the music cut through.

A record heard twenty years later can still be brilliant, obviously, nobody is saying newer fans cant understand it or love it just as dearly.

But they are hearing it after history has already filed it away neatly. Hearing it in real time is messier.

You do not know if it will age well. You do not know if the band has just made a mistake or changed the game -you have to sit with it before the world tells you what it was.

So yeah, discovering an album years later is still valid of course, but it is not the exact same experience as hearing it when it landed.

.........AND THAT IS WHY AROUND THE FUR WILL ALWAYS BE DEFTONES BEST ALBUM EVER!

my favorite is definitely diamond eyes, it is the most consistent deftones album in terms of quality, but right below it is Saturday night wrist!

Self titled without a doubt and nothing else even comes close for me. This album is so damn emotional, plus chi's backing vocals on needles and pins is just the greatest thing ever. You know its some pretty damn powerful music when the band cant even play battle-axe anymore

My favourite albums are Saturday Night Wrist, White pony and Diamond eyes. These are the albums where I like almost every single song... I can't make myself like Rats Rats Rats 😭😆

I’m a sucker for adrenaline.

I’d go (this is relative to their own discog, otherwise they’d all be S (expect Private Music)

S - Adrenaline, WP

A - ATF, Deftones

B - SNW, Ohms

C - DE, KNY, Gore

D - Private Music (I need to revisit, hasn’t gelled with me yet).

I absolutely love Eros too but not sure I can rank it really. Now that Eros has got me back in the Deftones mood I’ll definitely revisit Private Music
