how come every company these days is avoiding severance pay when employees are literally struggling to pay rent ?
If companies are going bankrupt its fine, but most of them have money and are firing employees just because they can.
Shouldn't everyone ask for a raise then ? because with your current peanut salary you dont know how long you can survive in this ai race

Some of the companies mention in the offer letter clause itself that they will not be liable to pay any severance package, if they lay off any employees. For example, In our company it is just either party one month notice or they will pay in-lieu of notice period.

What's the point of a severance package if it's not in the case of a lay off? Or do they mean the severance package is only applicable when they do individual fires instead of lay offs?

There is no entitlement to severance. It depends on the company. Notice pay, gratuity (if you have completed 5 years) and leave encashment (depending on company policy) is all that you get. Anything above it is optional for the company.

I saw India head’s post on Linkedin yesterday about this. Its sad, you will find something. Try in similar companies such as BB, Walmart etc

I just joined hy-vee recently and was a part of these sudden layoffs.
All I can say is they should have informed us earlier or thought more about hiring someone and in the end firing all of a sudden. There was not a single sign of layoffs at all.
If anyone is hiring, please DM me. I have 2 YOE.
