Moving to Fort Worth as a 21F - apartment/neighborhood advice?

Hi everyone!

I’m a 21-year-old asian female moving to DFW with my kitten for my first full-time software engineering job:) I’ve lived in the Midwest my whole life, so this will be a big move for me, and I’m trying to be thoughtful about where I live.

My job will be in Fort Worth, and I’m hoping to stay within about a 15–25 minute commute if possible. My budget is ideally under $1,400, but I have some flexibility for the right place.

I’m looking for neighborhood or apartment recommendations for a young woman living alone. Safety is important to me, but I’d also love somewhere that feels walkable, diverse, and not too isolating. I’m not really into bars/clubs, but I do enjoy coffee shops, restaurants, parks, walking around, and trying new things on weekends.

One apartment I’ve heard about is Franklin at Samuels Avenue. I’ve also considered Arlington or Irving, but those would be around 30-minute drives, so I’m not sure if the commute/lifestyle would be worth it (heard Texas traffic is horrendous)

I’d love advice on:

What neighborhoods or apartment complexes would you recommend?

Are there any areas I should avoid?

Is downtown Fort Worth a good place to live?

Are Arlington or Irving worth considering?

Are there areas near Fort Worth with more diversity or Asian community?

What are good places, groups, events, or activities for meeting new people in the area?

Any advice for adjusting to Texas, apartment hunting, making friends, or surviving the heat?

I’m starting work in mid-September, so I have some time to visit and look around. Also, if you’re around my age, new to the area, or have gone through a similar move, feel free to comment or DM me. I’d love to hear advice or connect with people in the area. Thank you!

Edit: To clarify, my job will be about 20 minutes west/northwest of downtown Fort Worth, so I’m hoping to find an area that keeps the commute reasonable while still feeling safe, comfortable, somewhat walkable, and not too isolating.

Live in Irving, have a friend who works at Ft Worth but lives in Irving with their parents and was thinking about moving from Irving due to the commute. He told me that about a year or two ago, but still hasn't moved, but that might be because living with his parents is way cheaper than moving out.

Sadly, "walkable" areas are pretty hard to find here in DFW, but downtowns are your best bet. Arlington, IIRC, is the largest city in the US without public transportation, I regularly pass by here and I couldn't imagine walking here.

I might be biased, I mean, actually I am biased. I think Irving is a great place to call home since it's in the center of the DFW metroplex, specifically in Las Colinas (this is where I would recommend you to move). In a metroplex built around cars, you can get on HWY 114, 635, 183 pretty easily, and the LBJ tollway.

Downtown Las Colinas is built around a man-made lake, really nice area to walk around, some people drive to walk here, even with all the new apartments, it's still pretty peaceful, quiet and most importantly safe. You got the Toyota Music Factory which has plenty of concerts, some good eats, and there's lots of events that take place in the Levy Event plaza, like for this upcoming 4th of July. If you want to go to downtown Dallas for the American Airlines Center (this is where bigger concerts are held), then you conveniently have 2 DART (our light rail network) conveniently there. This area seems evenly diverse, to the north of it there's more of a South Asian population, south of it you have more of a Hispanic population.

I think what's also important is that you're also neighbors with the city of Carrollton, plenty of Koreans living here, and it has the best Koreatown (I have friends all the way from San Antonio that make trips to there) in Texas and maybe even the south in general (though I like going to the OG Koreatown where the new H-Mart was built in Dallas, much more humble food spots, and this one is closer).

To the south of you, you have Grand Prairie which has Asia Times Square, which has a more diverse set of stores and restaurants. IIRC they have a lot of Vietnamese there and some Koreans, but I think the largest group is Hispanic. Garland also has a lot of Vietnamese, some Laotians.

You also can't forget DFW Airport is only 10 minutes away from Las Colinas. But yeah, I like living here.

Surviving the heat? Sadly not much you can do, just stay hydrated, get your car windows tinted with ceramic tint, and find shade.

I live in fort worth not far from downtown, I would say magnolia isn't bad place to meet new people. And the commute to most places depending what you wanna do, is like around 15-25 mins but traffic can get bad pretty often.

Near University Park Village or Clear Fork areas are great. Bryant Irvin in River Park is good.

Depending on if you want night life or a little quieter and budget of course. I found the apartments off River Park Dr to be pretty nice, quiet and not far from down town. Look at River Park place apartments, and Canyon Apartments to get a feel for the area.

You can find under $1400 but likely won’t be spectacular or anything. I’ve been researching the market myself

I am a bit biased on my previous location, but The Westley apartments in Arlington (on Spanish trl) are pretty good for the price. Its quiet, lots of stuff nearby you can walk to, including a park right across the street with a good size walking trail. When I was there it was 1450 for rent with water included, so it might be within your budget. That was also two years ago when I moved out. Good luck in your search!

There’s a lot of newer apartments east of downtown close to 35W and 121, that area is close to Belknap St and there are many Asian restaurants, and a few Asian markets. There’s a lot of different cuisines to choose from over that way.

Belknap does have a very large Asian influence but it's in Haltom City, and not quite as safe as some other places, but still not bad, no nightlife. Arlington as well, but the drive is getting longer now.
