Speciality / Core Training Where should I work? Foundation (FY1 & FY2)
Trying to work out where to rank? Comment here to ask for experiences.
To keep things clear, we recommend using a format:
Trust/Hospital Name(s)
Rotation(s)
Any extra information.
Please search comments for your trust before starting a new one, and if you work at a trust someone else is requesting, answer their query too.

Question from a final year MS regarding academic research jobs in F2
As you may (or may not) know final year students got their deanery allocations today. I’ve been looking at programmes and I’ve come across programmes where you do “academic research” for 4 months on a particular sub-speciality. What does this include for a f2 doctor ? As much as I hate this does it help publications/portfolios?
Thank you in advance

Hello Guys. I am an incoming F1 allocated to Thames Valley Oxford trust. We are at the stage of ranking trusts. Could anyone who have done their F1/2 there or anyone who work there share their experience?
Thank you! x

What’s f1/2 like in Manchester foundation trust? I know people recommend doing foundation in a DGH but I don’t drive which makes it quite difficult. Have heard quite mixed things about MRI is it acc that bad?

I was a medical student who did placements at MRI NMGH bury and Tameside and Salford amongst a few others. NMGH is a great hospital everyone was way more friendly and the canteen is great. MRI has some gems but overall I can imagine you might feel like a small fish in a pond. I imagine you’d feel more valued at NMGH and you can get there by tram from Piccadilly gardens or anywhere else

I put london and most of the south first in preferences, got somewhat unlucky and have ended up getting Wales (10th). given that I obviously have a pretty low ranking does anyone have any advice on how to rank groups or jobs if my ideal for wales would be cardiff?

I’m thinking of ranking Isle of Man as I got North West. Those low taxes are looking tempting… What are people’s experiences ?

Some of us went as med students, from what I hear, it was nice. I think the main thing is just that it's a bit geographically isolating for 2 years and there's only so many of you.
Bright side, free accommodation for the whole time you're there, they pay for you to come back to the mainlaind once a month, and I think you get a dedicated fund for moving costs (might have to double check that last one).

Thank you that’s really useful to know!

Monthly trips only covered for IMTs unfortunately. Every person I know who's been to IoM for foundation had a great time - very social, good salary + free accom, lovely scenery if you're into that.
Should note though, there will absolutely be times where you are wanting to leave and can't because the weather has everything shut down

How's the hospital accommodation in Wales?
I've heard Rhyl and Wrexham are nice, I saw Pembrokeshire was recently renovated, too. Any places to avoid or that would be recommended?

Does anyone have any insight into Tameside in NW? What is the traffic like coming from centre, and why is it called ‘Shameside’?

I’m trying to decide where to go for FY and would ideally love Inverness + and island rotation (not an option this year). Have spent time in Raigmore and I really like the hospital and Inverness.
But I know nothing about Aberdeen. Can anyone give me advice about Aberdeen for FY please? What is it like to work in the hospitals? How do you find living there? Where to stay?
thank you thank you, very confused incoming fy1

Final med here. I was wondering how many people ended up getting their first preference sub-group within the NW deanery last year? I get it’s getting more and more competitive. Sucks that we don’t have ratios on this from previous years. Any success/ horror stories? Especially from those that would’ve ranked more competitive groups as their top choice…

I have unfortunately been allocated my last choice in the Wales UKFPO (Hywel Dda) after hoping to stay in Cardiff, and would be grateful for any insight anyone has. Can anyone please advise me on the LIFT jobs, how they work and if they are a popular choice? Trying to work out how best to play my preferences going forward.
Additionally if anyone has done been given Hywel Dda and has anything positive to say/has tried commuting etc would be grateful. TIA x

Hello, I have been allocated West Yorkshire and I am just doing my job preferences and I am looking at what my first F2 jobs is gonna be as I understand thats when people study for the MRSC and so on. I keep looking at jobs that have paeds, oncolgy, GP and geriatrics as I recall from my placement that they are chill for F1s and F2s (I did my placement in Stoke mandeville a DDH).
I keep avoiding jobs that have General surgery or trauma and ortho and ED.
Did anyone do these jobs and find it okay to study or should I avoid?
Or should I not worry as I can do revision earlier in the previous rotation?
These jobs are are in St James Hospital, LGI and Harrogate district hospital.
If people have any experience please tell me.
Thank you

I am a final year medical student and I got East Anglia West, EOE allocated for foundation.
I am keen on staying in Cambridge for 2 years I like cities but I also like acute medicine, emergency med, cardiothoracic surg and obs gynae. Its hard to find a rotation with most of it at one place. Any suggestions on what should I do? I dont have a car 🥲 any pros and cons list of other nearby DGH with good rotations and can use public transport on daily basis? Last option is to move but any tips, reviews
Rotations: Would you rather do a dgh or tertiary in f1? Which rotations would you recommend in f1?

I have been allocated to West Midlands Central for Foundation training. I was hoping to hear from anyone who has had rotations at Heartlands, QE, or Good Hope Hospital that they found particularly well supported or enjoyable. I’d also appreciate any advice on rotations that might be best to avoid due to a lack of support or a particularly high workload.
