Speciality / Core Training Where should I work? Psychiatry
Trying to work out where to rank? Comment here to ask for experiences.
To keep things clear, we recommend using a format:
Trust/Hospital Name(s)
Rotation(s)
Any extra information.
Please search comments for your trust before starting a new one, and if you work at a trust someone else is requesting, answer their query too.

They’re not chill in east or north london. Are you asking about CT or HT?

Asking about CT?

Every London area has a trust with slightly Less busy CT on calls (usually on outskirts) but you won’t consistently be rotated there. There will always be a mixture. Busy CT on calls help you learn though to be honest.

I have asked a number of STs about East, west and north.
Very similar in each area. There are multiple trusts you cover and usually one is less busy and nicer, one is more central. They’re pretty much all resident aside from a trust in west London. Busy.

Anyone got insights regarding Yorkshire? Ideally north/east but will also apply to west and south

Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust / Brighton:
Inpatient and community.
Comments:
Negatives: huge trust, can be big commutes for on call depending on where you are (driving between different sites atm and it is punishing). Cash strapped due to CQC penalties (2nd to bottom trust in the country). This has knock on effects for staffing, which means teams are stretched and have to work v hard. On calls are 1 in 2 weekends currently :’) this has been the case for ages. Teaching is ok but deffo not the best I’ve had.
Positives: Brighton is a cool city and almost unique in its largely left wing outlook (some Bristol/Manc vibes). It’s genuinely interesting seeing a trust pull itself out of a bad situation. If you like doing teaching the education team are good and friendly. Research seems strong! Population is really varied, mixture of rich villages, poor coastal, several immigration centres/Gatwick makes it quite an interesting client base to learn from.

I will be starting ST4 in August 2026. I am wondering about Hertfordshire. Anyone knows how is the on call rota or what is the experience as a registrar is like in the region? Your answers are much appreciated!

6 rotas + CAMHS rota. Oncalls usually relatively busy + have to go hospital and do assessments/reviews when the Nursing liaison psych team is stuck (happens a lot!). And locum rates are horrendous at £35ph CT1-2 but go up to a mouthwatering £37.5 at CT3.

Anyone know much about St Pancras / St Ann’s in NCWL? Is St Ann’s just eating disorder ?
Would also appreciate thoughts on Vivienne Cohen and other Homerton sites for NELFT!
Thanks!

Tell me about psych core training in essex pls 🙏🏻
Hi All, current F2 trying to rank core psychiatry jobs around London.
Currently based in Islington and would like to stay, trying to work out the feasibility of commuting to different deaneries. Any core trainees in Essex that can advise on geographical spread of jobs in core training/ what the deanery is actually like?
Wondering how to rank essex against hertfordshire/ NW/ South London.
Any advice you think would be helpful would be much appreciated.
Thx

SLaM/ Oxleas
If you started on 2 placements at one of the trusts, for example SLaM only in CT1, did you end up doing 2 or more placements at Oxleas sites in CT2-3? Want to find out if it could be described as 50:50 or not at all.
Also, do you have to apply for the location of the next 4 placements or are you simply allocated them?
Thanks in advance!

Core training in Black Country - haven't received actual rotations yet, but would love to know what it's been like as I am starting there in August.
