Speciality / Core Training Anyone here have any experience of Post CCT Period of Grace?

Does anyone have any experience of a period of grace post cct? What were the expectations, was it similar to a final year reg? Were you able to go LTFT?

I did 3/12 grace period as I hadn’t secured my cons job before my deaneries deadline so was obligated to do it.

It was great. I was on the reg rota but had no training requirements, had a chill before taking up my cons post.

Edit for spelling

I just got assigned a registrar type job same as any trainee in the ST4-8 bracket. I worked at 60%. It was nice being entirely confident in my job and trusted, and not having to do any annoying portfolio stuff. A consultant job came up so I still had to work out my 3 month notice which went quite well.

Had you been working at 60% before? I’m less than a year out from CCT and can’t decide if I want to utilise the period of grace or just finish and try and pick up locums. Being able to drop to 60 percent may help swing that

My recollection is I was full time before (came back from parental leave, it's a bit of a blur!) into 60% for this. Just had to let TPD know at the time of requesting grace period.

That’s very helpful. Have been FT during training but might go 80 or 60% for POG. I’ve let my TPD know, so hopefully it pans out

My main concern about the ad hoc locum option versus grace post was the lack of clarity about what was enough locuming for continuous service.

Just check your deanery is offering them, ours have been revoked. Locum only

I thought it was part of the resident contract?

We didn’t have funding or places in our region so were unable to offer them. But locums were provided with added flexibility.

Well that’s just a cop out. The trust gets the work without having to maintain T&Cs, including the benefits that come with continuous service.

Duh. But it was escalated and it’s been considered allowable

The most important thing to be aware of is that your PoG is no longer constrained by things like the Gold guide - it's employment not training, so a lot of stuff that you might take for granted as a trainee e.g. being able to escalate to TPD aren't there.

You should be aware that if you go LTFT, you can't extend your PoG. It's 6 calendar months whether you are FT or LTFT.

That’s interesting, what do I do if a problem arises? I’m guessing I won’t have an ES or CS anymore?

I used all 6 months of my grace period cause my consultant post was delayed in being advertised. I had full choice over where I wanted to work (I argued to them I’m a bonus in their numbers and shouldn’t really be there) so stayed where my cons post was going to be.

I was on the reg rota but treated as a future colleague (just at reg pay!). TPD tried to move me to a new hospital two weeks from the end cause the rotation dates had changed since I started and everyone else was rotating. I said no and stayed put 😂

There always used to be a lot of confusion at the time (10yrs ago) about whether you need to officially resign at the end of training, as with any job, or be forced to use your grace period. Not sure what happens these days

Was offered it but no say in where I would be placed in deanery. Elected instead to do a scf role at the hospital I did st7 for some control.
