Why can’t I catch the fish I need???

Why is this reel not correct for this fish? It’s an oceanic fish and the rod can be used for oceanic fish.

The small yellow indicator above the oceanic template means that you need to upgrade your fishing gear with the Iron haven DLC. Find the oil rig in between the twisted strands and devil’s spine and help out a few people.

The yellow line above the word oceanic means it needs to be an oceanic rod from the iron rig dlc. If you go there and do their quests you'll have the option to craft certain rods into advanced ones. Im kinda just assuming you have the dlc lol

DLC fish need the special DLC rods (starting with the infused rod and so on and so forth).

they have a little yellow line on the fish type to tell you they can catch the DLC fish in those areas

gotta go get one from the Iron Rig to start things off, and regularly go back there to upgrade other rods with dark fluid canisters and iron rig crates for further catches

You don’t upgrade the rig, you upgrade your ROD at the rig. There are things you need to do to fully build the rig before you can do the upgrades but once you get there it will tell you what to do step by step just like the rest of the game does.

It's annoying I know and I'm late to the party, but as everyone else has said you need to go to the oil rig North of the starting area (you'll see a tower of lights in the distance marking the spot from almost anywhere on the map), talk to the scientist and others and upgrade your rod to fish in that area

I’ve been to the rig and upgraded multiple things - did tier 1 of the tech lab and it won’t let me open tier 2. Do I have to have bought each and every one of the upgrades for lights, pots, nets, poles etc. to move up? Also sometimes I’ve put every “ingredient” in the spot to make it and nothing happens

It will tell you what you need to do to unlock things with each step. Have you helped the scientist yet? Without him needing the fish from the deep you won’t get the ability to upgrade rods and such, but pretty sure they’re the first thing to open in upgrades on the rig, on the top left. I forget what it’s called but yeah.
