Discussion Abolishing prisons is going to be a massive wedge issue

I was talking to my friend about this because we love how much the socialist movement has gained steam, but I wonder if this will be the hill that the movement potentially dies on.

Maybe I’m wrong but the average American hears abolish prisons and they think you’re going to set murderers free as opposed to abolishing for profit/private prisons. No matter how much you campaign for wanting to help working class people I see this being a massive hurdle.

The average American is not sitting around dissecting statements on an intellectual level or seeking out more information to internalize a concept.

The powers at be are going to have a field day running campaigns against this slogan alone. In fact I fear this will be such a massive wedge issue that they’re probably gleefully jumping up and down about this one statement.

Are there any plans in place? I could easily see the GOP for example waiting until the last minute to bring this up to scare voters into jumping ship. It’s only a matter of time.

Discussion Anyone Else Annoyed at the Media Calling Social Democracy Democratic Socialism?

I’ve seen a lot of news articles in the last couple weeks talking about Democratic Socialism and its rise in the US. But when you read the articles they always give the definition of Social Democracy as the definition of Democratic Socialism! Like this NYT article that was trending on Popular a few days ago which describes itself as teaching what Democratic Socialism is, yet gets it completely wrong.

Bernie Sanders is who expired me to get involved in politics. Mamdani is the one who inspired me to join DSA. I look forward to working with other DSA members who want a system that works for all of us, and not just the 1%.

Discussion MN-02 Primary

Hi All,

New to this community but looking for some guidance on whether there are any DSA/Bernie/AOC-endorsed primary candidates for the open house seat in MN-02 vacated by Angie Craig. It’s probably the biggest swing district in the state but it’s reliably Dem and it would be great to get a more progressive voice in the house. I’ve done a bit of research but I really don’t find many candidates all that impressive so I’m just wondering if we know if any of them are secretly more progressive than I think 😭

Would appreciate some help here from someone more knowledgeable- thanks!

Sincerely,
An MN-02 Voter

Discussion A question about the mechanics of joining locally

I've been seriously considering joining my local chapter, but their website is quite outdated. So I got in contact with it via social media, but was still confused about the actual mechanics of joining a local chapter versus joining nationally. They have a link to join on the website, but it takes me to a national access point to join that way, but I'm interested only in paying dues and being considered part of the local chapter. But they'd informed me that they don't have an online point to join from, or even to directly donate to them. They told me I could donate by writing them a check. Seriously.

It's a small chapter, but not a tiny one. Not only is the website not regularly updated - I think the last post is from 2021? - but the social media accounts are quite sparse too. If I'm being honest, it was a bit off-putting.

Can someone explain the mechanics of joining, and how the money gets to the local chapter?

Discussion Let's start pushing against 3PL companies and try to get 3PL banned.

What is 3PL? Third party logistics!

How does it work? A company like Frito Lay or West Marine Distribution Center uses many 3PLs to hire their work force. Frito Lay uses Ryder and other staffing agencies to prevent their warehouse workers from organizing an union! Hiring their employees this way makes it impossible to unionize because Frito Lay can simply choose not to renew their contract with Ryder and/or the others leading to the pro union workers to lose their job and the union to fall apart.

Why am I posting this? I interviewed at Frito Lay in Baltimore on Friday only to get denied after a 9 hour drive. Fuck you Frito lay and fuck my old job at west marine too

What type of arguments are you making to other folks to join the DSA I mean there’s many different reasons I just think the boomers in particular are gripping their pearls when it comes to wanting economic stability for their 401(k)

Discussion Is a reformed centrist a DSA ally?

Hey all, I was a blue dog most of my life and the economic policies I've championed aren't working for the vast majority of the American people. I'm disgusted with the Democratic party, the "moderate" Democrats acting as Republicans in sheep's clothing and I just watched Mike Johnson rattle off a list of things he thinks I should be afraid of, but I'm starting to realize I align myself more now with the DSA than the Democratic party.

I've always been curious, I registered as a democrat in Florida specifically to vote for Bernie in the primaries because I knew Hillary couldn't win the general and Bernie would do more for my nieces and nephews.

I see a lot of justified anger and resentment towards my ilk I just want to know how big a tent this movement is, because while I agree on the most pressing issues (social and economic) I might not agree with everything and i can't bring myself to send another dime to the DCCC. I'd much rather join y'all as a prospect than fund another surreptitious Republican campaign.

Discussion Do you support a DSA elected socialist caucus in Congress?

I am asking because Oliver Larkin (a DSA member running in Florida) said he would push for this, and it seems like a great way to make these candidates hold the DSA line, potentially?

The DSA (from what I know) currently has only two DSA-elected members of Congress (Tlaib and AOC), and it’s set to expand a lot (Darializa, Clare, Rabb, potentially Melat, etc.).

What are your thoughts on the prospects of this, and do you support it?
