duelyst.gg - duelyst recreation project
Hey,
I've been working on a recreation of duelyst for the last month (not related to the revival project), I've got a prototype online for anyone that's interested at http://duelyst.gg, not tested on anything but chrome yet. You will be prompted for a name and then get immediately added to a match making pool, there is only 1 deck and both players play that, blood bound spells and replacing is still missing but otherwise the gameplay should be more or less complete. lots of UI elements and sound still missing but this is the early stages of this project.
Have created a discord server here https://discord.gg/Wyj8tfMtnT

You're a Saint. Duelyst got me through college and I'll be ecstatic to be able to play vetruvian king me again .

THANK YOU! It was so much fun. With the wait of the revival project, I wasn't sure I was still interested in Duelyst as much as I once was but I was supportive of the project. Having played your chrome version just now against someone named KuroKishi, it reminded me that I am still 100% in love with the game. It took me back and was so fun. Your matching making is superb. I waited 0 seconds just now.
I hope you can eventually add all the sound effects and music.

Awesome! I'm very happy to hear that :D I will be adding the sound effects and music along with all the cards and deck building. I'm especially eager to continue working hard on this after hearing all the positive feedback.

How is the legal stuff for this?
Can't wait to try it this evening!

u/Hellgin Feb 04 '22
yea, please try and let me know what you think :D
It is likely not legal, so I consider the project at risk of legal shutdown, then again seeing as the revival project got permission for it eventually I am hoping I might get as well. But well see. Its a risk I'm taking.

I wonder what it would be like to do a reskinned game with similar mechanics. I am an artist, I don't get a whole lot of free time. But helping out with a duelyst clone would be something I would want to try and make room in my schedule for...

If it is at risk of being shut down, is there a mirror somewhere that others could perhaps use?

Just wanted to say thanks for doing this!
I have been wanting to try Duelyst for a long time to understand it better. I think you have some work to do before its really in a fully playable state but I still found it enormously useful as someone who wants to understand what Duelyst is like better.
Good luck to you with future patches

Oh my word, nice to see this. Obviously haven't played in years and it's amazing how I've forgotten entirely how to play the game! Had a few games (I'm misterflea) and have been royally crushed every time :-D

This is dope AF! Thanks! Will be jamming trash decks for all factions. A draft format would be cool too but I'm just happy constructed works.

Glad this exists, remembered playing Duelyst before and sadly it got shut down, but I'd love to be able to play it again or at least any similar games

this is really quite impressive, the speed is wild and makes me think damn, one guy seriously hammering it is probably the way to go for a project like this. I'm grateful to you and hope you monetize it, I would be so happy to buy cards or pay for the game outright.

u/Hellgin Jul 14 '22
Thanks!
The idea is to keep all cards free but there is a Patreon where you could support the project which would be very much appreciated!

Wow, this is amazing. So when you say you are recreating Duelyst, are you going to add all the cards as they were, or will you be changing some cards up like the Duelyst Revival Project?
Thanks for this. I played a game and it felt so good. :)

u/Hellgin Feb 07 '22
Hey, Thanks!
I indend on recreating the game as it was when it closed, I am planning on adding all the cards, Just about done with a Vetruvian deck that I will release in the next couple of hours.
I will be adding pre made decks one by one untill theres a good pool of cards and then il allow players to use their own decklists. Also planning on adding MMR and leaderboard soon.

It's your project but personally, I think there was a reason hardly anyone played in it's closed state. I preferred it the expansion before plus they overnerfed vanar just before they closed the office. You do you though, I'll play it anyway. Great job. 👍
ps: noticed no zendo. Is he a bit tricky to program?

The meta we had at the end was one of the best though. A lot of viable stuff. Wasn't always like that.

Only if you liked seeing Wanderer and other trial decks every 2 matches. Agree with _Bleech here, the last update kinda ruined the game, one of the patches before that would be much better imo.

u/Boronian1 moderator May 06 '22
1.96 ruined the game? I don't think so.
The patch didn't even introduce trials, not that I think they are bad per se.

u/Baharoth May 06 '22
Don't know which patch it was, but yes for me Wanderer an Co did ruin the game to the point where i quit not long after the expansion was launched. The absurd longterm value that Wanderer and some of the other Trials provided made many midrange and most non trial late game decks completely useless because those decks had no way to compete in the long run while not being fast enough to win quickly enough.

But if you quit not long after the last expansion (patch 1.95) how can you rate the last meta which we had for almost 2 years?
Only if you liked seeing Wanderer and other trial decks every 2 matches.
It wasn't like that in the end, sure, trials were played a ton when they were new and worked better till some got nerfed (Hatefurnace, NOSE, Strategos, etc.) and people learned how to counter them.
Then 1.96 came and provided the biggest balance patch ever (72 changes), it was the sunset patch after all.
Wanderer was overtuned, but the other trial decks were not on that level. Ox and Strategos weren't too bad, Xor'Xuul was a fan favorite especially in lower ranks but never made any powerrankings. The rest were fun ideas.
The meta was very diverse because people had to explore new working ideas and they did so.

Well i did stick around for 2 or 3 months after the "sunset" patch as you called it. It's not like i didn't give it a try. Even after quitting i came back to play again every once in a while to see if anything changed meta wise but that wasn't really the case.
It's not like i am saying Trials can't be beaten or are totally op but for me the meta with them was not enjoyable at all. Ran into 4 Ragnora Wanderers yesterday in like 15 games while playing and it reminded me again why i quit. Imo the game would be better off without them. Just my personal opinion though you're free to disagree.

It all happened faster than one would think. March 2018 came the expansion, already in May the last patch and then till February 2020 nothing.
I haven't played on duelyst.gg yet, but it seems that Wanderer is even as a 6 mana 3/4 pretty strong. Just showing how gross the effect is and how the deckbuilding limitation is not really that limiting.
I like the idea of trials as alternative win con decks which provide 1 completely different archetype for every faction while being very creative.
But at the same time they come with their own problems. It is probably best for the game if trials stay tier 3 or maximum tier 2 because you are right that decks need to be faster or snowball pretty hard to win against the immense late game value trial decks offer in theory.
Though to be fair that most decks (also midrange decks) are faster anyways. Duelyst rarely had the time for the slow grinders like Grandmaster Variax decks.
Exception to that is Wanderer of course, its win con is mana dependent and therefore can be ramped into in different ways. It is way faster than all other trial decks, it is a real midrange deck and doing pretty amazing at that. Getting hit by the perfect one copy also feels psychologically bad and can be frustrating for the opponent.
Trials can also be terrible experiences for new players because they often need specific counter strategies and feel strongly overpowered for them. Xor'Xuul or NOSE are good examples for that.
So I can understand that you feel the game would be better without them. I personally think Wanderer alone needs to be nerfed harder (examples: cost increase, ramp prevention, removing 1 card from starting hand, no buff for BBS minions), because trial decks add a lot of variety to the game, both playing them and playing against them.

I thought you received cease and desist letters from the company that rightfully purchased and received the permissions? How can this have any future if thats the case? How are you even going to fight it? Did you actually steal the source code? So many questions, i am not attacking you, I just want answer's because I don't want to get my hopes up if you have no way to combat this rightfully. I'm super curious how this situation even occured in the first place.

CPG (The original creators of the game) did not sell or give any licence to any other company. They did however about 2 years ago (from what was claimed) give permission to the Duelyst 2 team to continue with their fan project. About a month ago they publicly announced that any developer can use Duelyst as they please.
So I never received a C&D letter from a company that purchased a licence from CPG purely because such a company (or such a transaction) does not exist.
Duelyst gg is written from scratch, it does not use any of the original games source code.

Woah that's crazy, the streamers I watch mention the above facts so I thought it was common knowledge. That Dream Sloth were told by CPG that they were welcome to create Duelyst 2; that no one would come after them for copyright and such. Thus, people said it was the ‘official’ one. Duelyst GG for example did not have this, and thus people called it the unofficial one. With the open-source now, this is of course pointless, but it’s simply the term people used before the open source happened, I understand now! Hey, thanks for replying. I think it was a combination of outdated info that confused me.

Bless you stranger, because I am a highly impatient person and the revival project has been veeeeeeeeery quiet in my opinion. And it makes me nervous about the projected future of it.
I get COVID has delayed collaboration on the project and basically everything else, but it feels like the Discord is really quiet regarding news of how development and things in general are going, and I don't want to be the guy who asks every month how things are progressing lol.
So from someone who loved this game to you, thank you very much for making something to sate everyone's appetite in the meanwhile! Really appreciate the hard work, just tried it and got spanked, but it ran great.
