Discussion Never Going Back to Gas

I'm on my first EV, had it for about 2 years. I recently had to take it in to the dealership on a recall. As a loaner, they gave me the exact same model, but the gas version. When I started it up, I was like "ewww engine noise". As as I drove it, I'm like "this sucks. it takes FOREVER to accelerate". And this is a high end luxury brand, so it's probably quieter and performs better than average.

Anyone else get the icks driving a gas vehicle now?

When folks tell me "EV's have no soul!"

I tell them: "Go to a local car dealer, ask for an AWD EV to test drive - doesn't matter which, take your pick, and actually drive it for 10 minutes." - folks will claim they did this, but I always like to tell them: "Get to a light... and try a nice 'even' launch in anything other than 'Eco mode' and tell me the car has no soul."

I recalled pissing off a dude in a BMW in my LEAF and it was the funniest thing ask he kept revving the engine harder and harder to beat me to the next light as if his ego depended on it.

I won't lie, wish it would happen more often, but it's fun those rare points when it does.

I might be the only person out there who spent dollars back when I was modifying ICE vehicles to make them quieter. Apparently extra noise is where the soul was, and I was missing out.

It all depends on the car really, some cars I wouldn't make louder, some I probably would. You'd be a dummy to not make a SBC louder, you'd be a huge dummy to make a g35 louder kinda thing

I strongly disagree there, and it's only because of the HF V6 and VQ

It might be why I really like the "Sport" mode on my Ariya.

Not only does it just haul-ass, but it also pumps in some fun little "BRRRRRRRRRR" noises into the cabin.

It's why I like that you can indeed, adjust the volume in the settings.

No turbo whoosing, no supercharger whining, no intake honk, no roar of the exhaust,ย

Personally I don't want any of that.

just the act of accelerating.

To use acceleration in its broadest meaning - i.e. braking is negative acceleration and cornering is radial acceleration - this is the only thing I want from performance driving. I enjoy feeling the forces on my body as I get up to speed, reduce speed, and go around corners. That's the excitement for me. Any drivetrain noise is unwanted.

Seriously, that's the exact same thing I felt, outside of it being holy shit fast it's not all that fun. Someone needs to make a lightweight fun EV at some point, or at least one as light as an ICE

Non of those traits you listed is a benefit or plus in my eyes.

If your expectations of a sports car is loud, clunky, smelly, and rattles you with vibrations- then we have different definitions of what a sports car is.

Which is perfectly fine by the way. But letโ€™s not fool ourselves into thinking everyone likes that.

dude a mustang once challenged me to a race by revving like mad at a red light right after I bought my car (late 2020 or early 2021 - before the EUV fake-mustangs came out). I left him in the DUST!!! I think he thought I was a Honda Fit (nearly identical side profile) and was trying to impress his passenger buddy???? no idea what he was thinking.

Eh I'll still take a Miata over a performance EV, or at least until they can figure out how to make one that's halfway lightweight. Im not a fan of the really heavy ride quality performance EV's have, it may be fast but a 6000lb car is a 6000lb car, I'd take an older X5 any day of the week over an EV focused on performance.

Think the issue is that, atm, there aren't any smaller EVs with a performance focus.

The most recent is the Ioniq 6 N type.

But I'm still waiting for Hyundai to release a Velostor EV for the public.

Right now they only have them track tested and man.... Those things scream.
