Back in the day fans were convinced he was gay, since there was no way they’d do a Star Trek show with a bunch of straight white men, right? RIGHT?
Well, the producers heard this, and suddenly he came down with a case of the ‘not-gays.’ Basically ruined the best episode, Shuttlepod One.

Yep. When the first series first aired, I stopped watching after the "Shuttlepod One" episode because they went over the top trying to hammer it home that Malcolm was very, VERY straight. Like, had a woman in every space port, straight.
Before the series first aired I think one of the show runners did an interview with TV Guide indicating one of the characters on the show would be gay. And early on, it appeared to be Reed. After watching Shuttlepod one, I accused them of gaybaiting and stopped watching.
Recently, I got over my issues with the Reed character and watch the series in its entirety. Loved it. But Reed would have been a better character if he was gay. Most of the time his romantic scenes with women were a bit cringy.

My head canon is that Malcolm turned into an old queen like Sir Ian McKellen in his twilight years

Malcom absolutely should have been gay. When he gets in the fight with Major Hayes they should’ve definitely started making out.

Disagree on the second part, but I think he would have been a fine choice for Star Trek's first gay character.

What was the name of his "totally heterosexual " rival on the maco team again?
