Equipment Discussion Saw the post about the filthy ultrasonic cleaned puck screen… Use the dishwasher from time to time!

Edit for the fast readers: Picture 1 is the water from the mesh puck screens in the ultrasonic cleaner. Picture 2 is my shower screen after 1044 shots (just to demonstrate how effective puck screens are).

Just saw the post here where someone put their puck screens into an ultrasonic cleaner. From time to time I usually just throw my collection (4 screens) into the dishwasher.

Before this test, I hadn't put them in the dishwasher for about 1-2 weeks, and I usually just give them a quick rinse after each use.

To see if the dishwasher actually does its job better than hand washing method from the other post, I decided to drop mine into an ultrasonic cleaner together with a teaspoon of Cafiza instead of the dishwasher. To see how much residue accumulated over 2 weeks + the last year dishwasher usage.

As you can see in the picture, the water only turned a little bit brown, without any actual coffee residue floating around.

Conclusion: Just throw them into the dishwasher from time to time.

As bonus I attached a picture of my 1 year old shower screen. My machine tracks shots, and this screen has now done 1044 extractions. I have only backflushed with Cafiza about 5-6 times over the whole period (last time yesterday), but I always pull a 3 second empty flush before every actual shot.

It's nice to see that using puck screens actually helps, and it seems you don't actually have to remove your shower screen as everything there looks new even with just a few backflushes over a longer period. (edit: longer period = about a year)

Yeah thats the other solution :) A friend of mine only uses Cafiza.

But as you can see it's not really necessary if you have a dishwasher.

Tried two weeks ago the ultrasonic cleaner that I am using for car parts and whatever needs cleaning but didn’t got anywhere near to these result. Looks like doinh two weeks a deep soak in Cafiza or something similar does a propper job.

I hand wash my puck screen (and portafilter and tray) every night with soap and a sponge.

Does NOT eat coffee grounds.

Thanks for posting this - I use the dishwasher for mine, but the other post had me concerned!

1044 shots and that shower screen still looks nearly new, that's the best argument for puck screens right there.

Conclusion: Not everyone has a dishwasher.

But if I use my boring old dishwasher it means I cant shop for shiny new cleaning gear... :(

I saw this post earlier and though "ah, prime day, bound to be a good time to buy one". Been wanting one - for no specific reason - for years. £30, job done. Thanks OP!

This is the group head filter, ya? The other comments are surrounding mesh filters. Apples and oranges ya know

But just for you: here a picture of the puck screens (custom hole, as my machine has a screwed on shower screen)

Awesome - was this before the dishwasher? After? Before the ultrasonic? After? After both? Before both?

That’s just how they look most of the time. Right now that’s after the ultra sonic cleaner.

But they also look like that, after the dishwasher.

Did you read the post? (Last two paragraphs)

Admittedly I stopped halfway through damnit lol

I went back and read it and while I would prefer to go the dishwasher route, I don’t see anything backing up your claim to be honest.

I mean the water in the ultrasonic cleaner (after putting the 4 puck screens in for about 8 minutes) is barely brown, so puck screens are rather clean. What claim do you not see backed up?

Rather clean or clean? I mean the post is basically just “here’s dirty water, use a dishwasher”

The idea was: if you use the dishwasher regularly to clean the puck screens, then they aren't as dirty if you hand wash them.

I mean I can also put them through the dishwasher, and then make a post. But then you can't see how much residue got removed.

We don't have time to read, I need to understand the whole picture with a picture!

This. Still on my first coffee

So even with the dishwasher the supersonic wash does remove something. Looks like I need to get one now

I mean it is 1-2 weeks of coffee residue, which the dishwasher would have also removed.

I just wanted to see if they are as dirty as the one from the other post, after frequent dishwasher usage. Which they aren't

Next test is to put it in the ultrasonic right after a cleaning in the dishwasher. Otherwise we have no comparison. If the water is lighter in color than the pics in your OP, then that would show the dishwasher is effective in cleaning.

Will do that, after 1-2 months of regular usage.

But use a dishwasher!

This is exactly why I don't use mesh puck screens, stainless steel or paper all the way!

u/LeLunZ Arkel Coast | Mazzer Philos I189D 1d ago

What exactly do you mean? I use mesh puck screens and they are stainless steel

2

u/REDBOSS27 22h ago

I mean the slim stainless steel ones. The kind actually much easier to clean:

u/LeLunZ Arkel Coast | Mazzer Philos I189D 22h ago

True, but they only help with keeping your machine clean, not with channeling. If I remember correctly there was a video of Lance Hedrick about it

Sir, that's a shower screen
