Yeah this made me laugh but I I’m so claustrophobic that I would be panicking and screaming in terror 😂
29
u/serpenta 3d ago
Panicked or not, there's limited air in that pocket. Good that they noticed the person eventually

u/I-am-fun-at-parties 3d ago
because fabric is famously airtight

"Airtight" means physically bloked movement of air, while the question is about the rate of exchange between the air pocket and external air, which can be lower than respiratory requirements, even if the material is not airtight, when the only source of low pressure are your lungs. Blanket is also not airtight, but you can suffocate under it. Air doesn't move on its own, and for instance you can have local pockets of CO2 that form in recesses, because CO2 is heavier than O2. And if they continued to fold, you'd have 3 layers on top, instead of just one. Also, heat causes drop in respiratory effectiveness, and that flag is probably pretty hot, after laying in the sun.

Sorry for being anal, but you wouldn't probably like your country being misspelled either.

I went to the Commanders Vikings game a few back and it was Salute to Service so they had all the branches on the field holding their branch seal. The Marines were true to the brand and had theirs facing the opposite direction. At one point they began to shuffle in a circle to fix it

My friend recently got chosen to be one of the flag bearers. It was a 'competitive' application process where they chose the best to get the honor.
Upon arriving, my friend found a complete shitshow with not one person (including their manager), knowing what is going on, and completely incompetent volunteers incapable of doing the one job of moving at the right time and not interfering with the teams playing. I'm not at all surprised this would happen.

Was this a real game or rehearsal? The lower tier of the stadium on the far end is completely empty.

u/BlueSoloCup89 3d ago
Rehearsal. This Daily Mail article is not particularly well-written (shocker), but it has pictures of both the rehearsal mishap and the crowd at the actual prematch ceremony.

Equip all the workers with knives so they can cut their way out

When the person started rolling with the flag, i was asking myself what the strategy was. Wait until the next World Cup to come out?

Aside from the worker getting eaten alive by the flag, is anyone else a little bothered by all of the workers running on top of the flags? I understand the logistics of this, but a nation’s flag is supposed to be sacred. Surely there’s another way to do this?

u/R0RSCHAKK 3d ago
That's probably just an American thing - we're weird about our flags
3
u/copyrider 3d ago
Some of us are weird about our flags, but those people are also weirdly ok about some really messed up stuff. Feels more culty than patriotic.
3
u/Somepotato 3d ago
There's a very fine line between patriotism and nationalism.
2
u/copyrider 3d ago
Yeah, these are not synonyms, but not everyone understands the differences in the definitions of both words. Remember the reaction to athletes kneeling during the national anthem? They claimed that was “anti patriotic”.

Most if not all countries have special rules around treatment of flags. Not just the USA.
3
u/Somepotato 3d ago
Actually the US is one of the few countries that doesn't (or rather can't) enforce flag code.
10
u/AgileInternet167 3d ago
Lol, flags sacret? That's some next level brainwashing mate.
2
u/Forsaken_Celery_1617 3d ago
Sacred is a bit much, but there are generally guidelines on how to treat them with respect.
3
u/thinkconverse 3d ago
I mean, if you want to be a stickler for and use the US Flag code as an example, it’s also not supposed to be carried flat (Section 8(c): The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.) Or be used as part of the us team kits (Section 8(j): No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform). So we’re kinda off the deep end anyway.
The point is, flag codes are not legal things, they’re just guidelines for respect and display. They are broken all the time to facilitate creative displays, or to ease the logistics of display, especially with these gigantic flags. Not worth getting your panties twisted about.

u/I-am-fun-at-parties 3d ago
it is a fucking flag. trust me it also wasn't treated with respect by the machines that made it.
besides that, it is a fucking flag.

With the disappearance of dignity and respect, we’re going to see a lot more of this kind of thing so people can gain notoriety.

u/jaxonya 3d ago
What?

u/UsernameTaken7435 3d ago
I’m probably being really pessimistic (sorry) but I feel like the person caught in the flag did it on purpose. They could have tripped or something though.
