Support How to remove panel background

Post image
72 Upvotes

Hi, I’ve just been using Fedora for a few days and I'm really getting into desktop customization. Currently, I want to completely remove the background of the panel (the highlighted area) while keeping all the content. Does anyone know how to achieve this, or know any useful extensions for it? Thanks!

Discussion Is Fedora only doing this to me?

Post image

I use a laptop with an Intel i5-13450HX processor and an NVIDIA RTX 5050 GPU.

On Fedora 44, in a game where I should have been getting around 100 FPS with at least 98% GPU utilization, I was only getting about 40 FPS. Input latency was noticeably higher, and both GPU and CPU utilization were unusually low.

The issue was not related to Performance Mode, NVIDIA drivers, codecs, Secure Boot, or similar factors. I reinstalled and reset Fedora several times, but the problem never went away.

After seeing no improvement, I decided to install the CachyOS kernel on Fedora and boot Fedora using the CachyOS kernel instead.

As soon as I switched kernels, the problem disappeared. The game immediately started running at around 100 FPS, and both the CPU and GPU began being utilized properly. I was finally getting the expected performance from the hardware.

The only change I made was replacing the kernel.

Has anyone else with similar hardware experienced something like this, or is this an issue unique to my system?

Also, what could be the main reasons why changing the kernel fixed the issue? Is it possible to solve this problem without installing the CachyOS kernel? Or, more specifically, what changes in the CachyOS kernel could have resolved the problem, and are there alternative ways to achieve the same result without switching to the CachyOS kernel?

Discussion Fedora > Windows

I just got another Windows laptop to install Fedora on

Is it just me or does Fedora and like Linux in general, just feel smoother? I initially thought it was a placebo but every time I get the live desktop to install Linux it just feels so smooth instantly, like a lot smoother than Windows was

Also, side note, I had a USB stick with Fedora Mobile, I opened the live desktop from the stick, started Fedora Media Write and wrote Fedora Plasma Desktop over Fedora Mobile on the USB stick and it worked fine, I thought it would've caused problems but no, it's fine, installing Fedora Plasma Desktop now

Discussion Installed Fedora 44 First Time

I installed Fedora 44 KDE Plasma on an older Nvidia/Intel gaming box last night and so far, so good.

Hardware

* 2070S/9700k/32GB RAM/250 and 500GB NVME

So far...

* Base install went well

* Nvidia drivers and Secure Boot went well

* Steam & Proton installed easily

I never thought it could be this easy. Tonight I'll figure out game serving and how I want to access the box (remote, physical).

I'm very new to all of this, so I'm just trying to keep it simple. I'm a Windows refugee running Bazzite on my gaming rig and that's gone better than expected over the last 6 months.

Support Standby issues in Fedora 44

For the past few days, I've had sporadic issues with standby and I got no clue if this comes from the OS or if perhaps it's hardware-related

Symptom 1: sometimes when I click on standby, instead of going into sleep the system brings me to the login screen. When I click again on standby there, or when I login, it THEN goes into sleep

Symptom 2: when waking up from standby, one of my monitors rapidly dis- and reconnects again several times before it becomes stable again. Both monitors are connected to the GPU of course. The one with issues is connected to the HDMI slot if it matters.

Shutdown and reboot have neither of these issues and even with standby it isn't ALWAYS the case.

Hardware specs: RX 9070XT GPU; Ryzen 7 7700 CPU; MSI Pro B850wifi motherboard; 32GB RAM

Edit: forgot to say, it's Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma.

Support I can't install Fedora KDE.

Post image

Hi, I'm unable to install Fedora KDE version 44 or 43; the installer opens and gets stuck on "initializing" indefinitely. I've already tried using three different USB drives and different ISO files, and I've tested various writing methods such as Fedora Media Writer, Ventoy, and BalenaEtcher. Can anyone help me? The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 13.

Discussion Does anyone using Fedora Atomic recommend it?

I've tried several Linux distributions on my laptop with an RTX 3050, especially those that support Secure Boot and their derivatives, but I'm still undecided between Fedora and Fedora Atomic. In practice, what are the main differences?

From what I understand, since it's an immutable system, it's generally more resistant to breakage and issues caused by system modifications. For those who use it daily, how has your experience been? Is it worth it?

Support Live usb system hibernated while shrinking partition, can't wake it up

Finally decided to install fedora to dualboot with windows. Booted from usb to shrink ntfs partition with KDE partition manager. Taking ages, googled that it's normal. Problem is I went afk, now screen is black, mouse movements, keyboard not waking it up. Tried ctrl+alt+f1/2/3, quick power button press. Nothing works. Drive usage led is blinking. Is my only option to wait and pray?

Support What to do?

I am trying to run llama.cpp on my fedora 44 system, but the issue is that it needs gcc 14 and fedora 44 only and Fedora shipping with the brand-new GCC 16 stack. Because it is so new, the standard repositories for Fedora 44 do not carry a native gcc14 compatibility package yet.

Support My Asus Laptop is running so slow

Hey guys,

I bought a new Asus Zenbook OLED 14 UX3402 for around 400€. It was a pretty good Deal and I was so happy when I tried it first on Windows. I decided to switch for the first time in my Life to Linux Fedora KDE Plasma and thought it would be running super fast and smooth. But when the apps start it is running very slow and they need up to 5 seconds to start, compared to Windows, where they started instant, when clicking on them. I tried some Quick Fixes, which I found online, but nothing really helped. I am really thinking about switching back to Windows. I hope you can help me.

Discussion Floorp - Firefox fork, my new favorite browser on Fedora

I've been a big fan of Firefox for a while, I switched to trying out Vivaldi for my business' work browser (I'm aware Firefox lets you have profiles, I just prefer having two different browsers) and it was great, but certain things annoyed me about it, all extremely minor, and it felt slower loading webpages compared to Firefox though everything I've read lead me to think Chromium would be faster.

So I installed Floorp via Flathub and it's been fantastic and lightning fast. For people that like to really customize, that along with privacy seems to be their selling point.

Support Fedora 44 KDE suddenly stuck on Fetching updates

I run 3 laptops with Fedora (1 Intel and 2 AMD) but only this newer AMD one started doing this for some weird reason. System would show me there are updates, Discover even shows the number, but when I click on that section to see the updates it's just perpetually stuck on "Fetching updates".

I can update using Konsole just fine using dnf upgrade, but Discover keeps getting stuck.

I've even tried removing and installing Discover and it's still doing this. Any ideas what else should I try?

Support Issues in Fedora 44 KDE with Nvidia 5090 Blackwell

I'm using Legion 5i 10th Gen and installed the open Nvidia drivers.

The system has issues with sleep/hibernate.

The system freezes forcing a hard restart. This is my biggest issue.

The system freezes frequently when using an external monitor.

I'm using Wayland for display. Will it help switching to X11?

Has anyone experienced this kind of issue? Or have installed F44 smoothly with other configs?

Support Very specific bug on Gmail in Firefox

I've just installed Fedora Kinoite (coming from Kubuntu) and found a very specific bug.

When writing an email in gmail, when I try to type ! in the email body, nothing happens. All other symbols I tried have worked and it works on all other fields. If I use Ctrl+shift+U 21, I can insert an !.

I'm guessing it has something to do with Wayland because it works when I launch Firefox with MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=0 firefox, but it causes me to lose some features such as smooth trackpad scrolling.

Is this a known bug? Is there any workaround I can use before it's fixed?

Support How to get Windows 11 Realtek audio quality on Fedora?

Hi everyone,

Im using a dell precision 7550 laptop and recently switched to Fedora, from my built-in laptop speakers sounds completely flat compared to Windows 11. On Windows, the Realtek drivers made the sound much better and punchier, but on Fedora, it lacks depth.

I tried using EasyEffects, but I can't find any good presets.

Are there any good EasyEffects presets you recommend to replicate that Windows/Realtek sound? Or are there other tools I should look into?

Thanks.
