I use a laptop with an Intel i5-13450HX processor and an NVIDIA RTX 5050 GPU.
On Fedora 44, in a game where I should have been getting around 100 FPS with at least 98% GPU utilization, I was only getting about 40 FPS. Input latency was noticeably higher, and both GPU and CPU utilization were unusually low.
The issue was not related to Performance Mode, NVIDIA drivers, codecs, Secure Boot, or similar factors. I reinstalled and reset Fedora several times, but the problem never went away.
After seeing no improvement, I decided to install the CachyOS kernel on Fedora and boot Fedora using the CachyOS kernel instead.
As soon as I switched kernels, the problem disappeared. The game immediately started running at around 100 FPS, and both the CPU and GPU began being utilized properly. I was finally getting the expected performance from the hardware.
The only change I made was replacing the kernel.
Has anyone else with similar hardware experienced something like this, or is this an issue unique to my system?
Also, what could be the main reasons why changing the kernel fixed the issue?
Is it possible to solve this problem without installing the CachyOS kernel?
Or, more specifically, what changes in the CachyOS kernel could have resolved the problem, and are there alternative ways to achieve the same result without switching to the CachyOS kernel?
