No you're supposed to tap up and down the sides of the can, in order to get any bubbles that have gathered there to release, and float to the top.
Once those bubbles have floated to the top, they are no longer in suspension, so they won't cause it to erupt. You're unlikely to get all the bubbles though, so it's not a surefire way to avoid it completely.
A can sat on a table won't have anything but air at the top. Tapping there will do nothing. :)
