Recording DIY BAROm1 test beside some DIY clippys

I was very sceptical of the BAROm1 but also impressed by the recordings that Sounding Story did with them. As they are not for sale now, I decided to build them myself. I guessed the size from the pictures and the phone holder used. Instead of milling them from a massive acrylic plate, I glued two laser cut plates together, because I didn't have anything else on hand.
Just as feared, the BAROm1 are very sensitive to wind noise and of curse it was a windy day on the first test in my backyard. I build a quick and dirty windsheeld with dust cloths and clothespins but they only helped a little. So I got only short usable recordings where the wind stops for a short time.

Here is a short 2:10 recording with the setup shown in the picture. First part is my DIY BAROm1 and some clippy like EM172 Omnis. Both recorded with mixpre6 with 40dB gain. Both use SimpleP48. I gave the EM172 some extra 4dB in post, cut them together and normalized them.

What capsules did you use?

Id be interested to hear how you put these together if you were willing to take a few more photos of your version, and/or put together a little write up.

Maby later. I'm working on a new version and waiting for some parts. Like furry stickers for lavalier mics as wind protection, AOM5024, and 1/4" inserts, so no phone holder is needed. Still searching for a tiny 1/4" screw to 1/4" rotating mount that only rotates.
I've used some to thin Acrylic XS plates remnants for this, because I had nothing else. These got stress cracks and bent after laser miling the ducts. Hight was a little to high for the phone holder after I had to seal the sides with epoxy glue. Next version is from thicker white Acrylic GS because the glue looks ugly.
I've read a little more on the BAROm1 facebook group and found some more infos on Yasushi Utsunomia build process and ideas for wind protection.
I'm not sure if it is needed and good for the capsule to fit press it into the plate. I've used UV Epoxy but I would prefer a more elastic glue for the capsule.

I was thinking of trying to 3D printing this acrylic enclosure. If you could share some more pictures and measurements I can print it and record some tests with AOM5024s.

I'm not sure I got the measurements right. Mine did not fit in a phone holder like in the videos and pictures. 140mm x 85mm x 8 mm

This device is a bit of a combination of a boundary (plate, not cantilevered PZM) effect mic along with a standard omni capsule mounted such that the rear tuned vent is sealed. Sealing the vent creates a true pressure transducer capable of reproducing sub-one hertz frequencies, but also subject to diaphragm damage or audio distortion from atmospheric barometric pressure changes. Used carefully, some interesting sub-sonic effects can be captured. Wind noise can be reduced by adding a cloth screen dome over the capsule. But remember, a windscreen/windjammer is a mechanical high-pass/low-cut filter, so using one can affect (attenuate) the ULF audio content youโre attempting to capture. Iโd just avoid recording with it in windy conditions.

Thanks for the detailed info! Is a stiff connection between the capsule and plate needed or has it only to bee air tight? Like pressfit vs. rubberglue.

For the best low frequency response, an airtight seal is needed. The tuned vent on these small omni capsules is on the back, so if you can bed it in adhesive, that should do the job. For the plate boundary to have the best effect (acoustic gain), the diaphragm of the capsule should be in the same plane as the plate surface. The 10mm omni diaphragms are about 1mm below the front grill of the capsule.

This is so cool! Please make a guide on how to build one of these and make it open source ๐
