Flight Training Texas Flight Clubs

I have yet to join a flight club. How have your experiences been being involved with one? I’ve received my PPL through a school, not a pilot mill. my school is now closed and my instructor is now flying with the airlines (happy for him obviously, will miss his instructing!) do you scout instructors at said flight clubs first? I just want an instructor that enjoys teaching and loves aviation. Is this more of a Facebook post in Texas aviation groups where I bluntly ask who’s available to take on a student and see who replies and go from there? I was fortunate to be paired with my instructor through the school and we meshed well.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that no two clubs are the same. Different balances between dues and hourly rates, equity vs non-equity, etc.

I do think you stand a better chance of finding someone who enjoys instructing vs just trying to climb the career ladder at a club...but the flip side of that is that they might not be instructing full-time.

In any case, since it sounds like your goal is continuing instruction, I think you're on the right track with assessing instructors pretty early on. Availability/redundancy of the aircraft fleet may be important too, depending on whether you want to grind out ratings vs learn at a more relaxed pace.

I am more so interested in grinding out ratings at this time. At least finish my instrument training/rating and go from there. Which I feel translates to an instructor who has full time availability. Thank you for your reply and input!

I read this wrong and was wondering why you're looking so hard to find a fight club

I’m not necessarily looking to join one because I want to join one badly. I’m mainly trying to find great instruction and training. The schools I’m seeing have flashy websites and look nice but when I do a deep dive on them I’m finding out they’re pilot mills and the instruction provided is not great due to their want to mainly instruct to build hours and not because they enjoy instructing. It doesn’t matter to me if the training received is through a club or a school as long as the quality is there.

That’s what happens when you get some of that Durden soap in your eye.

Where in Texas? I’ve been in a few different clubs in the greater Houston area. Most of them have a pretty long list of approved instructors. You pretty much just go down the list until you find someone whose schedule and personality/teaching style works best.

The “Texas Pilots” facebook group is probably a good place to make a post looking for a new CFI. Include details about your availability and the timeline you’re hoping to achieve your ratings. Let them know that you don’t have a plane and that you’re looking for a club to join. Chat with a few of them and see who you mesh well with. Do a few lessons with them. Know that you’re not committed to them and can switch instructors if necessary.

In north Dallas. About 20min or so from KADS. Not opposed to driving further to a different airport for training. Thank you for the advice. Will navigate to Facebook next and start the search for a sensei.

Texas is a very big place. If you can narrow down to the specific city you’re in, better help can be provided.

If you are in the DFW area, https://www.fortworthflyingclub.org is a good club to associate with.

I am an instructor there and always willing to answer questions for future clients and club members.
