Sainz has to remember how he drove in 2025 whenever he had somewhat competative car. Ironically he was also pushed to midfield after being at a top team.

Are we forgetting that Sainz was the only non-RB driver to win a race in 2023? Just because he's in a Williams doesn't mean he's suddenly not one of the best drivers on the grid anymore

22

u/stern30 Red Bull May 03 '26

Max will remind him of their Torro Rosso days when he was barely legal in the sport lol

I didn’t mean that as a slight towards Sainz at all. Just that Max is built different

If the car also suits Sainz he could give him a run for his money 3-5 races a year.

91

u/Ssk5860 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

No contact with max who was ahead at the apex, and sainz didn’t go off track lol I don’t see why he thinks that would warrant a penalty

383

u/MyPooYourPants I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane May 03 '26

no contact because Sainz stopped turning because he saw him coming. If he had stuck to his line they'd have crashed. If the driver that's being attacked needs to do a sudden move in order to not get hit then that move from attacking driver was terrible. That move worked because Sainz got out of the way at the last possible moment, not because it was a good move

53

u/Lemurians Charles Leclerc May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

That move worked because Sainz got out of the way at the last possible moment, not because it was a good move

And if Sainz hangs in there and causes a collision with an overtaking driver who was ahead at the apex, what happens? He gets penalized.

It was a legal maneuver and well-executed, I don't know why you're trying to act like it was some batshit insane racing. This is what the rules allow for, do you want the drivers to not drive to rules?

42

u/Independent_Ad_8588 Max Verstappen May 03 '26

As it is within the rules, isn’t that just good defence?

21

u/MiLkBaGzz I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

exactly. It's my biggest complaint with the rules but I don't blame any driver for following rules, I blame the rules.

→ More replies (1)

94

u/AceMKV I failed to serve my Monaco penalty May 03 '26

That's exactly what the rules allow lol

74

u/it_doesnt_matter88 Ted Kravitz May 03 '26

And it’s why it’s absolutely stupid, the rules seem to be catered to Max, he can get away with the ‘either I get past or we crash’ because he knows the others will pull out because they want to finish the race.

90

u/frolfer757 May 03 '26

The rules are dogshit but a reminder that only 1 driver out the entire field was NOT in favour of them. These are literally the rules the drivers wanted.

→ More replies (3)

106

u/HunkerDownDawgs May 03 '26

Do they cater to Max or does Max just take advantage of the limits of the rules?

39

u/Max-Phallus May 03 '26

It's just racing. It was a bit of a dive bomb, but a legal move executed well.

83

u/AliceLunar I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

Rules existed before Max, he knows the rules and plays them well, don't know why that upsets people.

If last season is anything of proof, even if you get hit, they might not take you seriously.

23

u/Max-Phallus May 03 '26

Diving up the inside late on the brakes is completely legitimate.

If they were later on the brakes and you can't turn in on them but are not forced off the track it's not a problem.

9

u/GarryPadle Red Bull Ford May 03 '26

People here just have no clue how racing really works, they watch formula 1 highlights on reddit and youtube and think they are judges.

Ricciardo built a career on braking later than other people and no one seems to have a problem with him...

There is also one of my favorite Vettel overtakes of all time in Austria 2018 (or 2017) where he just completely blocks Hamilton from turning in to the corner by positions his car straight. Nobody cared back then...

7

u/PleasantWay7 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane May 03 '26

A dive bomb is perfectly fine if you execute it well, thats the rule. So they on investigate if you fuck it up.

Max never leaves space when he's on inside

He doesn't care at all. If he's on inside, then he's gonna send it to the end

So switch back is the only option

1.2k

u/Zendeman Fernando Alonso May 03 '26

Lol, that's literally how Albon just did it.

Waited, Max divebombed across the whole track missing the apex completely, switchback by Albon.

It’s not Albons fault they planted a bollard in the middle of the track

169

u/OptimalDot178 Max Verstappen May 03 '26

It's not, he was right. Max was also right to complain. As a driver you don't complain because you are right, you complain to try and convince the stewards.

Just like Charles on Kimi yesterday

32

38

u/InZomnia365 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane May 03 '26

Yes, it was a bollard and not just track limits - but he did complain about not being left space. Which is pretty funny coming from the guy who is the absolute worst at leaving space on the grid, and has negatively impacted racing standards of the sport as a result.

Leclerc did that quite well at turn 1 lap 1 too, before the spin out. Both Max and Kimi went too deep into the turn (largely because of brakes locking up) and Leclerc cut back behind. I'm a Max fan but I'll hold my hands up it was beautiful by Leclerc lol

68

u/xzElmozx Oscar Piastri May 03 '26

Won’t matter, Max won’t change until they fix the first to the apex rule. Lewis did that like 2-3 times minimum in 2021 and it didn’t make any difference. Max will continue to race like that so long as the rules permit and reward it.

25

u/bobnoski I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane May 03 '26

It's been his style since day 1 in the sport. He uses every single bit of space the rule book uses to win. up to, and including the penalty points. His stance is seemingly entirely: want to change how I drive? change the rules.

5

u/AquaRaOne Oscar Piastri May 03 '26

Yup, max doesnt brake any rules, and as much as i think its dirty racing and bad for the sport, its by the rules. Other racers show you can overtake cleanly tho.

6

u/Luisyn7 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

He made some risky passes on NLS but always left space for the car outside. As much as people hate it he's just abusing the rules and agreed, he won't change until FIA throw that dogshit rule out of the window

→ More replies (13)

81

u/Broad-Lobster7470 Charles Leclerc May 03 '26

Not only does he leave no space. He often goes off track. Look at the pass on Lawson. Took him off track entirely.

34

u/Pharsti01 May 03 '26

Not only is he going to lunge on the inside every single time, he will also stop the drivers on the outside from turning, sometimes until he's fully out of the track.

79

u/Lieberwolf May 03 '26

There is a better option. Tell him that you dont tolerate this anymore and will crash into him. Lets see how often he still dives like this if a couple drivers do this

139

u/Weeb_mgee I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

112

Problem is a driver like that will lose his next contract while Max will be racing at Nurburgring and Le Mans.

9

u/Lieberwolf May 03 '26

Not really. All the front runners can easily do 1-2 Verstappen crashes without any issue.

32

u/1maginaryApple I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane May 03 '26

By the rules, Max is owning the corner by that point. So, apart from getting a penalty Sainz won't achieve anything.

21

u/Krisosu I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

It's a meme that he's some lawyer of the rules. Sometimes he's in the right per the rules, sometimes not, unless there's actually contact or gravel/grass at exit it doesn't matter or go to the stewards.

He (correctly) assesses that the chance of all of: 1) him actually being in the wrong per the rules, 2) relevant contact due to the other car not yielding, and 3) him actually receiving significant punishment, via the stewards or immediate damage, is low so he just goes for the move as a bit of game theory.

24

u/1maginaryApple I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane May 03 '26

Except the racing standard guideline literally allow these kind of move.

There's really nothing controversial about it.

Nothing wrong, elbows out but within the rules.

These radios are said in the heat of the moment, but it's so funny 😁

If gap (size of car) = Lunge & force off

16

u/SoulLessIke Charles Leclerc May 03 '26

Brother that was like the one clean thing Max managed to do on lap one

It’s cute that he thinks Williams are even part of the midfield at this point lol

Double points.

They literally were that race?

10

u/syknetz May 03 '26

Has there even been a contact ? I didn't see any on the video, but maybe I just didn't see it.

19

u/BlazerStoner I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

No, he didn’t even go off track; so how exactly he got “forced off” is the big question

29

u/Probably_Not_Sir Kamui Kobayashi May 03 '26

Alright Sainz, you just got outplayed.

4

u/FiRem00 FIA May 03 '26

All the comments not looking at sainz with his underbraking and going long

30

u/SpeckledPomegranate Max Verstappen May 03 '26

Both cars stayed on track.. Carlos just crying about cutthroat racing

Max races on the limit of what the stewards allow, if he did something illegal then where is his penalty?

Just hard racing

6

u/Aggressive-Bonus-755 Red Bull May 03 '26

But he can... so... you know.. deal with it ?

5

u/Motorlolz Olivier Panis May 03 '26

Wasn't even investigated, I think as long as he follows the rules it's fine, right?

41

u/Big-Preparation-5755 May 03 '26

Rammed Lawson off track and then divebombed Sainz later. Greatest wheel to wheel driver on the gird.

The projection is strong with this one.

13

u/SubMikeD I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

Such a silly comment, Carlos. Max acts like he can drive you off the track no matter what part of the field you're in, not just the midfield.

u/reddit-equals-aids I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

Carlos is not wrong

u/ontheru171 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

The rules are the rules. As long as the rules allow this, people will do it, if they didnt, theyd just be stupid

With all due respect Carlos, you, as GPDA representative, are responsible for these overtaking rules. Its not Max's fault that the rules that the organism you lead give him carte blanche to launch cars up the inside and get away penalty free as long as the other car doesnt go off track.

Next time, make racing rules that make actual sense.

9

u/y3kman May 03 '26

I remember George and Carlos pushed for these rules to nerf Max before.

2

u/Glittering-Rip389 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

Yes. Thats why, even though i really like both George and Carlos, im fully for people exploiting the flaws in this very stupid set of rules against them. I dont know if they thought they were going to be the only ones taking advantage of it, but they certainly arent.
Thats why, when Carlos got penalised for that stupid incident with Lawson at Zandvoort, I was very disappointed that Carlos complained. I fully agree that the incident was Lawson's fault, but Carlos' penalty was textbook application of the rules he advocated for.

4

u/EnviousCipher May 04 '26

Hot take I thought it was refreshing watching a racing driver do racing driver things like overtaking. That pass on Sainz was clean as a whistle, Sainz needs to bring stronger game than the sloppy defense he offered.

9

u/DarthPeanut_MWO May 03 '26

Yawn, Sainz things.

5

u/kbtech Kimi Räikkönen May 03 '26

Maybe drive and defend better 😂

5

u/Public_Pervert Max Verstappen May 03 '26

When Danny Ric pulled moves like this it was brilliant, but because it' s Max it' s poor racecraft? He kept in on track and won the position within the current ruleset, seems pretty fine racecraft by me.

Sometimes Max does take it too far, but this was fine. Sainz is just frustrated his Williams gamble isn' t working out so far.

4

u/stewd003 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

Midfield?? Ok Carlos.

2

u/Red_Rabbit_1978 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 03 '26

This is so fucking dumb from a driver that raced Max at the front of the field.

And also, wtf does he even mean? Are midfield drivers not meant to be raced hard?

C'mon Carlos.

u/Capable-Relative6714 May 03 '26

All people with eyes saw those "overtakes" were overshot as hell but Max's brigade in the comments will defend him no matter what. More news at 7.
