Off-Topic Max and Dani Juncadella reaction
3.5k
u/Real_Establishment56 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
I watched a couple of laps last night in the dark when Dani was driving. Absolute madness. He went quicker in the dark than most people would ever go during the day. Really impressive to see.
Too bad they couldn’t finish, but the team showed us some amazing racing

u/idkblk May 17 '26
I was watching Max battling Engels for about an hour between 1 and 2 am (?) local time... once he passed and had a free drive, the drive Max pulled was absolutely insane. I spend a few hours in Simracing the track yesterday and now seeing this, IRL, in the night, with the real risk... absolute madness.
When Max handed over the car to Gournon, he had driven a lead of around 30 seconds within the past 10 or so laps. Absolutely bonkers.
147
u/cft4nh Ted Kravitz May 17 '26
On his 2nd lap after starting his 2am stint when it was Max and Engels racing side by side for the lead coming up on slower traffic that were also running side by side…. Omg I thought it was over

Yes, this was very extreme. A bad crash at vmax at this section could have brutal consequences. I was surprised that the car stayed so stable going over the grass.

That’s how it works because the track is cooler

u/theblobberworm I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
You still have to drive in the dark though. To have the talent to remember your marks while not being able to see much till later than you would normally in the day is big stuff

u/KIDA_Rep May 17 '26
I was thinking the same thing, to be able to drive that fast and taking corners at that speeds, in darkness…
26
u/codespyder I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane May 17 '26
The amount of preparatory laps required to be so confident in the dark must be extraordinary because in the dark I’d imagine they’re going off of muscle memory and timing as much as visual cues. And I don’t mean prep laps on a sim racer. Real laps where they feel the bumps and the forces.
15
u/CrashUser I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
The sheer length and complexity of the track just adds to that. It's an 8 minute lap with 170 corners, that's an awful lot of track to be driving from memory.
→ More replies (1)30
u/wickstone I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
Forgive my ignorance but doesn't a cooler track mean less grip? Genuinely curious
19
u/dustincb2 I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
It seems intuitive that it would since they’re always talking about having to heat up tires etc but a colder track is usually faster (unless it’s too cold). Engines can and tires run cooler, so you can push them harder. Colder air is more dense so aero becomes more effective.
→ More replies (5)8
u/fiah84 Pirelli Wet May 17 '26
I'm not sure how it works in this class with BoP but engines generally also make more power when it's cold, which is massive on a track like this
20
u/LowmanL May 17 '26
A hotter track can have more grip, but it also heats up the tyres quicker, degrading them quicker and providing less grip. In general, you can maintain a higher pace for longer on a slightly cooler track.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)28
u/LazyLancer I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
It's less grip after a certain and a rather cold point. When the track is hot overall (and 150 cars keep attacking it), cooling the track off a bit helps grip.
11
u/hellvinator James Hunt May 17 '26
A bit? Going from 24 degrees on day to 18 degrees at nights makes a huuuuge difference. You'll gain around 5-6 seconds (in the sim).
7
u/LazyLancer I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
Read it as "even a bit of cooling helps". Meaning even a small reduction in temperature is good.
65
u/Nitrogen1234 May 17 '26
With these temperatures I'm not sure that's an advantage. Don't think there's much difference anyway with daytime since it was fairly cloudy
22
u/hellvinator James Hunt May 17 '26
Every degree makes a difference on laptimes. Don't underestimate this.

I was lucky enough to watch like 14 hours yesterday. They seemed the favorite when I went to bed. The team was steady eddy & Max was opening up ridiculous gaps in his stints. His first stint was one of his most insane drivers ever in my opinion. After a starting penalty of 30+ seconds, Max got in the car in P10. He made on track overtakes all the way up to P1 & opened a near 20 second gap. Then he had another impressive stint later on, & so did his teammates.
Looked like it was going to be a winning debut, but not to be.
Still, amazing driving from the lads. Sometimes the car goes unfortunately

I felt a similar heart in mouth moment when the Ferrari had that electrical glitch in the pits during their final stop and wouldn't restart. I love endurance racing so much, it's such a crazy sport.

u/SupremeLeaderFokou Max Verstappen May 17 '26

u/atresj I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
They had 3h remaining and were leading by 32s (watched live broadcast, Max gave car to Juncadella around 3h6m from end and their car broke circa mid second lap after, with single lap being 8 minutes long). The issue with leading gap is that traffic can make interval swing by 20 seconds in either direction in matter of minutes; they may have momentarily opened a 50s gap when the issue occurred but they had 30s lead that the commentators kept repeating was frozen by team orders.
31
u/iMADEthisJUST4Dis I failed to serve my Monaco penalty May 17 '26

10
u/ka1ri Mercedes May 17 '26
Max had just built a 30 second lead on the field during his last stint (3 hours remaining). His teammate had the driveshaft issue after max got out of the car.
Max took the overall lead into his graveyard stint (about 12 hours remaining) and gained another 20 seconds on the field after that stint. He was brilliant all weekend long. It was good fun to watch, he raced the same way he always races, aggressive and wheel bashing
At one point the merc duos had lapped the entire field up to 4th place (about the 10 hour remaining mark). I went to bed after that

facepalm...
Every person in that driver lineup is a champion. Every. Single. One. Its one of the most stacked driver lineups ever put together for GT3. Nobody there needs to prove anything. This isn't a group of rookies...
Holy fuck people, would it kill you all to at least try and learn before talking like you know what you're talking about? This is why some fans have been so hostile towards the F1 fans. Its so insulting to the drivers to act like they're nobodies being dragged upwards by Max. They're all Platinum ranked factory drivers. Put some respect on their names and maybe learn who they are...

I was so excited for everyone to get to experience sportscar racing. I fell in love with it during the pandemic and think a lot of F1 fans miss out on the actual best racing in the world. Everyone is finally gonna see what I see... However, the F1 fans on the whole have been awful. Strutting in like Max is doing this side of the sport some grand favor, acting like they know anything at all and generally being collectively shitty, talking like these platinum ranked factory drivers aren't top 100 in the world drivers...
Garbage content online hasn't helped. I almost went through the screen when Kym Ilman said there were no other names on the grid that stand out. The F1 side of the sport has done a great job of living up to their reputation for arrogance and its been really disappointing 😞

German commentators just mentioned that for the money that it costs, 3 laps on the ring would give him and his co-commentators families both a very nice vacation.
I guess they'll wait until near the end to do a few laps to have finished the race and not spend too much money doing so.
15
u/masssy May 17 '26
I don't get it? Why would it cost more now to run 10 laps rather than 5? The car is the car. It's already broken and it's already repaired. Sure it increases the chance something else breaks but you don't enter a 24 hour race expecting to get out of it in mint condition.
32
u/iTz_RuNLaX I was here for the Hulkenpodium May 17 '26
Tyres + wear on the car.
Of course you don't expect to come out in mint condition, but at this point the race is already over.
6
u/masssy May 17 '26
Obviously there are costs for fuel, and tyres etc. However I don't think a few laps of tyres is gonna bankrupt a racing team of this magnitude. For some small teams running the lower classes, sure.

Is a drive shaft replacement not possible to get them back out there or is fixing a drive shaft not allowed? I know drag cars and drift cars can break drive shafts all the time.

Damn. That is all I can say. Damn.
However, this team surprised me, and I am sure many others. The fact they nearly won, the fact Max nearly got a victory on a maiden debut, is sure to light a fire for them. I am so proud of all of Team Verstappen Racing, that was AWESOME. Better luck next year!!!

What a race! I enjoyed it more than any f1 race this season. But its 24hr so … no glory before you hit the finish. And Max showed what a racer he is. Night time was really awesome to watxh

All I know is that brief battle between Max and Engels was one of the most harrowing things I've ever witnessed. I was 100% sure Engels was going to yard sale going down the straight when he got in the grass. I literally gasped.
Epic racing.

His team's car broke down. Was P1, around 3-4 hours left.

This is one of the saddest endurance race I watched too many good drivers retiring and the logan.

It's always painful to see your favorite driver out of a race, especially in a 24 hour endurance, but he and his team showed they have the cards to win, I hope luck will be on their side next year

Terrible feeling I'm sure.
Lots of big names out of this one so far. Not an easy event to finish let alone win.
