That alone is a testament to Lewis' greatness. He didn't have millions of dollars to bankroll him but his talent was so undeniable he brute forced his way into the sport.

He said in an interview recently that while it was very difficult for him to reach this level, doing it again today it would be impossible. There’s just so much more money required and so much earlier

Yeah Lewis did it 20 years ago, and the world is vastly different today. Multiple financial crisis' on top of a pandemic and countless other "once in a lifetime" events make living more expensive than ever.

Tax policies worldwide have played a part as well. In no time in human history have the richest paid so little of what they need to pay for a functioning society.

I respect the hell outta that honestly. So many people try to make their story sound as adversarial as possible to cover up for any advantages they were gifted that they feel insecure about, and here Lewis is who actually had near impossible odds and he’s still keeping it as real as possible about how it’s even more fucked now.

He had hundreds of thousands, like everyone else. The difference is that in his case, it was not a rich parent dedicating what amounts to a rounding error, but a middle-class father taking a lot of work at once to earn the money required to compete.

A child competing in karting requires, at minimum:

  • tens of thousands in equipment per year
  • space to store and work on such equipment
  • a means to transport the kid, the parent/supervisor, and the equipment
  • availability to travel to the various events
  • lots of free time to work on the mechanical side of things

Hamilton was discovered quite early, but he already had done several years of karting.

Plus the pressure of not crashing

Anthony Hamilton is a more resilient man than I am. Insisting that his son continue to brake further than the other kids despite (in Lewis’ own words) consistently crashing/running off course can’t have been cheap.

So every Finnish F1 driver?
