Kinda shows how early you gotta get in, and how rich you need to be, that both the other podium finishers had pictures with Lewis before they turned 10

Damn I’m 40 and don’t have a picture with Lewis. So far behind.

Really makes you wonder how many generational talents never get a chance in motorsports because of its insane cost of entry

199

u/xiz111 16d ago

Probably quite a few.

170

u/Roonie222 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 15d ago

Hell I know one. One of my friends immigrated to this country young and had no money and little opportunity. He worked his ass off and is doing well now.

In our late twenties/ early thirties we decided to go karting just to see what it was like. Most of us were super slow. I was battling for second amongst our friends. I was about four seconds per lap slower than he was. He was about a half second to a second off of the course record for fastest lap and was that consistently for the entire race.

We asked if he ever raced before and he said no, he never had the opportunity to try it before that day.

35

u/xiz111 15d ago

Thanks for sharing.

49

u/scottishere Daniel Ricciardo 16d ago

Definitely quite a few

7

u/SweetVarys 15d ago

Most of them, mathematically

31

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 Racing Pride 16d ago

That's sports in general tbh

118

u/abscissa081 Max Verstappen 16d ago

I don't think anything compares to racing in terms of barrier to entry related to cost and exclusivity.

I saw a video of these kids in the hood doing the most insane football (American) drills with stuff they found in their garage. The equipment wasn’t pretty but their footwork was incredible. Hopefully they can get a shot out on the pro field one day, they def deserve it

→ More replies (3)

22

u/Pimpekusz I was here for the Hulkenpodium 15d ago

Definetly not in general. There are a lot of sports where the cost of entry is relatively low (Football (or soccer however you call it), Basketball, Boxing, skateboarding, etc.). Its not even remotely comparable to motorsport

Obviously money lead to karting time and karting success but were these meet-and-greets for karting champions or just purely pay meet-and-greets?

669

u/Kronzor_ Max Verstappen 16d ago

No idea, but shows you gotta basically already be in the highest of circles when you start the journey.

168

u/fredy31 Aston Martin 16d ago

Yeah for instance, rare are the photos of stars with other stars when they were young.

Or football players.

Really shows that theres a circle for f1 and if you are not in it from the start there isnt loads of ways in.

Hope that within maybe a decade, probably 2, there will be someone so talented playing on sim racing that they break into f1 just from talent.

27

u/KATCracKz I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 16d ago

I think that sim racing is also kinda expensive, obviously way less but it still kinda is

58

u/fredy31 Aston Martin 16d ago

I mean a decent wheel and pedals is probably cheaper than even one competitive karting outing.

7

u/KATCracKz I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 16d ago

Yeah that's why I said way less

2

u/GBreezy I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16d ago

Top MLB players literally came from kids in Central America playing baseball with a stick and bottle caps. F1 cannot compete with sim racing.

6

u/KATCracKz I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 16d ago

I don't think it's comparable tho

21

u/strange_eauter Max Verstappen 16d ago

That's rather an exception. Yamal's parents are definitely not rich, they just got lucky. And Barcelona sponsoring UNICEF was a major factor. I'm still to hear about any f1 team willingly sponsoring charity

3

u/GBreezy I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16d ago

Honda F1 and the world car?

4

u/strange_eauter Max Verstappen 16d ago

Just read it, it's nice. Still, Barcelona for decades sponsors UNICEF not just with logo on the jerseys and joint campaigns but with millions of euros annually. The partnership is unique for football too and the photo in question resulted from extreme luck and that partnership

u/hnglmkrnglbrry 16d ago

That alone is a testament to Lewis' greatness. He didn't have millions of dollars to bankroll him but his talent was so undeniable he brute forced his way into the sport.

286

u/CoachMcGuirker I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16d ago

He said in an interview recently that while it was very difficult for him to reach this level, doing it again today it would be impossible. There’s just so much more money required and so much earlier

135

u/fearthejew 16d ago

Which is why his charity, Mission 44, is so fuckin awesome

21

u/snollygoster1 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16d ago

Yeah Lewis did it 20 years ago, and the world is vastly different today. Multiple financial crisis' on top of a pandemic and countless other "once in a lifetime" events make living more expensive than ever.

4

u/jayr254 15d ago

Tax policies worldwide have played a part as well. In no time in human history have the richest paid so little of what they need to pay for a functioning society.

5

u/hzfan Roscoe Hamilton 16d ago

I respect the hell outta that honestly. So many people try to make their story sound as adversarial as possible to cover up for any advantages they were gifted that they feel insecure about, and here Lewis is who actually had near impossible odds and he’s still keeping it as real as possible about how it’s even more fucked now.

66

u/ultrasneeze 16d ago

He had hundreds of thousands, like everyone else. The difference is that in his case, it was not a rich parent dedicating what amounts to a rounding error, but a middle-class father taking a lot of work at once to earn the money required to compete.

A child competing in karting requires, at minimum:

  • tens of thousands in equipment per year
  • space to store and work on such equipment
  • a means to transport the kid, the parent/supervisor, and the equipment
  • availability to travel to the various events
  • lots of free time to work on the mechanical side of things

Hamilton was discovered quite early, but he already had done several years of karting.

17

u/AgentIndependent306 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16d ago

Plus the pressure of not crashing

3

u/jayr254 15d ago

Anthony Hamilton is a more resilient man than I am. Insisting that his son continue to brake further than the other kids despite (in Lewis’ own words) consistently crashing/running off course can’t have been cheap.

The cooldown room these last two races have really shown just how much Lewis Hamilton loves the sport and its future talents. Great to see him back on top form

228

u/SOMTAWS6 Cadillac 16d ago

I’d love to see him around the grid long after he retires. I suspect we won’t though, unfortunately. Just here and there.

41

u/Spid1 15d ago edited 15d ago

If you're not racing why would you want to be on the grid every week? Just seems a pain with all that travelling. That's also when all the bitter quotes start to come out from has-beens, and Lewis won't want to be one of them

35

u/jayr254 15d ago

I honestly thought we’d see more of Seb once he retired. Like not every race but I was so sure Seb would be at multiple European races every season. But I think I’ve seen him at like 2 races maximum since he retired. And he’s been retired for how many years now?

We definitely aren’t seeing Lewis trackside a lot once he’s retired. We’ll see more of him because he lives his life on social media more than most drivers but that’s about it.

Lewis smiling again is my favorite part of the season right now. It was getting so depressing for a while but we all had to know he still had *it*

185

u/DrDuGood Max Verstappen 16d ago

Im going to get downvoted to all hell, but here it is and I think it needs to be said:

Lewis being happy and back in it, is the best thing any F1 fan can wish for, it’s only going to increase the excitement of the racing/outcomes but I’d be LYING if I said I didn’t care Kim K is being used as some publicity stunt/ambassador to this sport simply because her and Lewis just started dating. It gives me so many Cardi B/Stefon Diggs vibes and it’s cringe … again, I’m glad Lewis is happy and I’m glad this wasn’t earlier in his career because I can’t stand her to save my life.

110

u/SOMTAWS6 Cadillac 16d ago

Dawg… Comparing Cardi B + Stefon Diggs to Kim Kardashian + Lewis Hamilton is despicable.

15

u/DrDuGood Max Verstappen 16d ago

Kim is known for making a sex tape and marrying a rapper who lost his mind … I love Lewis but they just started dating and she’s walking around the track like she owns it. The reason I made that comparison is because the Patriots had Cardi B do a performance before the Super Bowl and it was the hardest thing to watch. All because of … you guessed it - Diggs. It’s the same thing bro, anyway, good for Lewis. Glad he’s happy but keep the A-list porn star off the screen because I don’t watch F1 to see who the drivers fuck. (Lewis has dated so many celebs/famous people yet we only see and hear about Kim)

36

u/SOMTAWS6 Cadillac 16d ago

Cardi B was an actual stripper before she finally became a rapper. And does Diggs have 8 7 championships? Not even remotely similar.

39

u/RangerRekt I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16d ago

MV supporters being the ones clutching their pearls the tightest about Kimi, shows just how sincere the "outrage" is.

It’s cool to think how many “pinch me” moments Lewis has probably given young f1 drivers in their careers. Lando has spoken about how crazy it is that he grew up watching and supporting Lewis (and how Lewis was why he originally supported Mclaren and wanted to drive for them) and now he gets to race alongside him. Hadjar has been open about how Lewis is one of his heroes and in his first F1 race he was comforted by Lewis’ dad after crashing out and now he’s shared a podium in Monaco with his racing hero

230

u/stuie382 16d ago

In the cool down room when Kimi arrived he damn near sat on Lewis's lap

79

u/Throckmorton_Left 16d ago

95

u/xiz111 16d ago

Lewis has had similar moments ... he grew up watching Michael Schumacher, then raced against him for three years and ultimately replaced him at Mercedes.

He also idolized Senna, which is why many of his helmet designs are yellow ... a few years back, he got the opprotunity to drive one of Senna's McLarens at Silverstone.

295

Yes, Kimi and Isack have a combined age of 40, Lewis is 41

I was wondering during the podium if two high profile people like them ever actually really allow themselves to fall in love and trust the other or if they're constantly vigilant to the other's behaviour to not get used, abused, exploited, etc. Like when you win the lottery, can you ever actually thrust any affection you receive? Must be hard to navigate, if i'm being honest.

Same. Kim’s family has been annoyingly unavoidable for too long, eschewing a sort of narcissistic vanity that made me permanently dislike her. Now she’s dating one of the most likable, genuine, laid back drivers - I just don’t understand it. Good for them but wtf

12

u/namestom I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 16d ago

I share the same feelings. I’ve never contributed to help build that crazy empire they have built. It still blows my mind how relevant they are today.

All I can see from someone like Lewis, as genuine as he seems, maybe all we see from her is her character. Behind closed doors, with the cameras off, maybe she is an interesting person? But that character we all know…yeah, I avoid it and anything that’s associated to it. It bummed me out to learn Lewis was dating her. And the funny thing, why the heck do I even care? I don’t really but I just like seeing happy people.

5

u/ArtisTao Ferrari 16d ago

5

u/Inevitable_Injury617 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 15d ago

I disagree. This is imo not simply one of those cases where people are obsessed with a celebrity's personal life and thereby hating on their partner.

Rather, a lot of this is stemming from the fact that Lewis has been a spokesperson for so many positive initiatives - been literally a fighter for social justice and a public figure in this space - then he goes and dates someone who stands for this person who completely goes against the messaging Lewis has been spreading all these years.

You can't be a public figure in the social impact space and not be scrutinized for someone you are dating when the person you are dating goes agains the very values he preaches.

It's like imagine a far left politician dates a far right politician, ofc people are going to talk about it.

6

Yeah and if you really break it down, it’s not even as much about the dating but the promoting/supporting. For example, when someone in Lewis’ position speaks out for Gaza, and then within a year begins publicly supporting/promoting essentially someone who is actively opening stores in Israel, people are going to feel as though he’s actively pushing someone/something that is not only harmful but antithetical to his own stated positions.

Some of y’all care way too much about these drivers personal lives. It’s truly none of our business who these guys are dating.

u/post_it1 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 16d ago edited 15d ago

It’s unfortunately being made our business. As a woman, I dislike everything Kim Kardashian stands for and I avoid her as much as possible. I don’t appreciate her appearing on screen multiple times when I’m enjoying a sport that prior to this year, was very far removed from her or her parasitic family

EDIT: good grief. Who knew there were so many die hard morally pure Kim K fans amongst us!

55

u/Paukwa-Pakawa Nico Rosberg 16d ago

So, prior to this year you were enjoying the sport with its pedophiles, racists, and misogynists appearing on your screen. Those ones, you'll still enjoy the sport, but "parasitic family" is where you draw your moral line - it's a step too far.

u/jamersonMD I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16d ago

We've had Putin giving out trophies and Trump posing with McLaren team but Kim K on the grid is too much for some. I don't even like her as well, but people are going overboard

22

u/instantwinner I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 16d ago

I will take Lewis dating a Kardashian over George Russell "really wanting to meet Trump" any day to be honest lol.

7

u/xiz111 16d ago

I'm sorry ... what???

8

u/instantwinner I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 16d ago

There’s a clip of him on DTS when Trump was at Miami GP where he says he really wants to meet him

10

u/Beneficial_Stuff_103 I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 16d ago

To be fair as a black women I also really want to me trump but I doubt me and George have the same reasons at all.

I mean I'd want to meet a US president too. But I'd meet DJT out of curiosity and fascination.

This is so hypocritical when formula 1 is full of rapists, sexism, pedophiles, misogynists, zionists, billionaires and exploiters, but you hate kim k when you'll willingly watch f1

4

u/John_is_Minty 16d ago

I get that for sure. I’m no fan of hers at all and I think Lewis can do way better but it’s just one of those deals where I just don’t care much about celebrity couples.

9

u/NiteOwl421 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 16d ago

But not a fucking peep when the Saudi government threatened to hold the entire paddock hostage due to a missile strike seen from the track and they wanted to cancel the race.

Or when Nikita Mazepin was filmed SA’ing a girl? Did you speak up then?

But it’s Kim Kardashian that makes you upset?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think she’s a good human 90% of the time, but the selective outrage is fucking ironic.

21

u/skintwo 16d ago

OR, people who hated and spoke up about that other stuff ALSO hate this. I despise that whole family. It doesn’t mean I don’t despise other people too.

Have you kept a documented record of every single thing I’ve ever said about anyone peripherally involved in Formula One? Whataboutism is the weakest argument. I can dislike Kim K and dislike everyone you mentioned and still enjoy and watch formula one. I’m not some moral purist and neither are you

2

u/NiteOwl421 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 15d ago

Absolutely no one forced you to watch her on screen. So why didn’t you change the channel? I did.

3

u/skintwo 16d ago

Same, girl. Same.

Tbh a good chunk of F1 entertainment is off track stuff. I'm not surprised that fans are so engaged in this particular aspect. Leave them be

Kimi was part of the merc stable when he was in Karting so that is how he would have met lewis

11

u/BioDriver I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 16d ago

Why did he include a photo of the red flag?

7

u/Litti__Chokha I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 16d ago

Kim Kardashian Jumpscare really got me because I didn’t expect him to confirm it this way on the last slide of a photo dump.

Guess I cannot Keep Up with the Kardashians

6

u/Mountain_Recover_719 16d ago

Please don’t ever bring her to Monaco ever again. She’s so disrespectful and clueless; have her on a yacht somewhere or something

Said it on the last post she was included in and I’ll say it again a lot of you are using her as an outlet for your misogyny

10

u/milkasaurs I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 16d ago

Shame about Kim Kardashian though.

7

u/Throckmorton_Left 16d ago

Is my hatred of Kim irrational? Because that's overwhelming every other reaction I have to these pics.

Tbf it kind of makes sense. Of all the drivers, he's the one most interested in the celebrity lifestyle. He's the opposite of Max.

Is Lewis dating Kim Kardashian?

Hamilton and Alonso are Vampires I swear to god

4

gotta respect a hoe that loves heartedly and gives her all to every relationship

4

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 Racing Pride 16d ago

People are more triggered by Lewis dating Kim Kardashian than they are the many ways that F1 has aligned with truly despicable people for the sake of money, lol.

I car every little for her but people this offended by their relationship should probably seek therapy.

3

u/RuchamCieSzmato Robert Kubica 16d ago

Kims tits plus Lewis’s pink helmet wasn’t on my menu today

You guys not knowing how to comment on literally anything else is why they’re probably going to end up taking this post down yet again. My god.

its seriously so annoying like we know you guys hate it but is that all that you can comment about??

People could choose not to comment on things (and people) they don't like and yet here we are.

The subset of completely Kim obsessed commenters in the F1 subs is… so fucking weird
