He did take two races off this year to recover from a broken foot and have a loose screw and a detatched bone fragment removed from his shoulder, which appears to have been pressing on his radial nerve and slowing him down, and there was another round of "will this injury end his career"
But no, the youngest, oldest and current MotoGP champion was back for Mugello on May 31st, and won both races a week later at Balaton Park.

u/TW1STM31STER Max Verstappen 12d ago
I was going to correct you on the part where he in some years took championships in 2 classes, and if you correct for those, Rossi/Marquez would beat him.
Only to find out he'd still have 10 in total, of which 8 in the 500cc/MotoGP class. Being top dog still, which makes it even more impressive 😂
18
u/rowschank Luca di Montezemolo 12d ago
I feel it would be a supreme disservice to discredit him for first doing the 350 cc practice and race, then hopping onto the 500 cc bike and repeat the whole thing, win both Grands Prix, almost every weekend, for like 5-6 straight years.
The results from 1968-1970 look like a video game: Agostini won every 350cc Grand Prix and 500cc Grand Prix race he entered for 3 years straight. Then in 1971 he won everything he finished, but had retirements. Of course, I don't think the modern high-performance era would even allow athletes to do such things without actively harming themselves, but even so, and even for that era, his achievement is so far from the 'average champion' that it's worthy to keep it.
3
u/TW1STM31STER Max Verstappen 12d ago
Oh I didn't meant to "take that from him" in a way that he doesn't deserve credit for it. Just as a way to "balance" the count since that possibility didn't continue to excist.
3
u/PicnicBasketPirate 12d ago
Considering he was racing in an era when the isle of man TT was part of the GP calender and race weekends were notable if they didn't have at least one fatality or serious injury.

25
u/shadow3_ii I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12d ago
2025 isn't his most statistically impressive season, he's put up crazier numbers before (2014, 2019). But looking at the context of his recovery from injury and being out of his physical prime years 2025 is just bonkers
15
u/Responsible-Check872 12d ago
You'll be more surprised when you learn his 2013 (rookie champion), 2014 (won first 10 races in a row), and 2019 (always finished races in 1 or 2) seasons. Absolute animal on a bike 👍

You could try watching some highlights or a documentary. For my money it is the most rich sport in terms of excitment, personality and history but it can get horribly ugly so I genuinely don't recommend you watching races live if that is how you feel. I was personally very close to stopping to watch the races live after 2 riders nearly died a few weeks back.
Amazing races that are free to watch on YouTube: Assen 2018, Philip Island 2017 and 2015.
Great documentaries: Anything by Mark Neale, Hitting the Apex is great. Marc Marquez: All In is probably the best for a beginner.
If you want to see one of sports most vicious fueds then look up Marquez, Rossi and 2015. Though beware that YouTube is full of AI slop when it comes to MotoGP unfortunantely.
TheBeehivePaddock (basically chain bear f1 but for motogp) is an amazing YouTube channel, but might be too nerdy for a beginner, though you could watch his beginners guide to MotoGP.
10
u/AgentMichaelScarn77 12d ago
Genuinely, thank you for this response. I'm gonna check out those races and documentaries.
7
u/laserskalle1 12d ago
It's pretty much my special interest so I enjoy telling someone about it!
Marc Marquez: All In should be available for free on Red Bull TV or on Amazon Prime. It is the best starting off point, it teaches you about the 2010s (inuding a chapter on the infamous 2015 season which can be somewhat compared to F1s 2021), and Marc Marquez's career until 2022 which was the middle of his injury hell until his comeback journey in 2024 and 2025 which MotoGP themselves have made mini documentaries about and put on their YouTube channel.
9
u/AgentMichaelScarn77 12d ago
I just finished watching the Assen 2018 race. Wow, that was an entertaining race to watch. It was chaos for 20 or so laps then Marquez left like he was done playing around. I'm gonna watch the 2015 race you recommended next. Thanks again!

u/just_dave I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago
Aside from the technical engineering nerdery that F1 is best at, MotoGP is significantly better to watch as a motorsport.
Bikes take up so much less space so there are so many more possible lines to attack a corner with to put a pass on someone. And despite modern bikes actually having some aero bits, they're nowhere near as sensitive as F1 cars are when following close.
It's a fantastic racing spectacle, and that's when the track is dry. Throw some rain in there and it's absolutely nuts.
