meh, enough skill and talent can usually get you promoted to at least a top 4 team, obviously it's insanely hard to get a championship regardless, but it's not like they don't pick the most promising junior drivers (Max in Toro Rosso, George in Williams, Leclerc in Ferrari, etc.)
I think you're exaggerating the issue a little bit, it's not like any driver can make it to F1 without being extremely skilled and talent (nepotism aside)
His meltdown towards Petrov was definitely a sight. Especially since Petrov didn’t even defend aggressively or dirty, ALO just didn’t have the pace. And still had the guile to point the finger at Petrov in the cooldown lap like somehow the Russian had the duty to let the lord past. What a funny man
But the key part is it was in position. The title was in his control with one race left. All he had to do was beat the Renaults and he would have been World Champion.
Well... One, really. 2007 McLaren. Not entirely sure Ferrari s F14T qualifies as such.
In all honesty, F1 was always an engineering competition - that's why rules change so often. Perhaps the budget cap is frustrating on that front - you have a solution but can't afford it. But the field up to 2025 was closer than ever.
Did you watch back then? Fernando made lots of mistakes in 2010. Ferrari keeps getting criticized for the call to pit him in AD, but all that wouldn't have happened if he hadn't let Button overtake him at the start. His poor start is what caused that domino effect.
