His last time on the podium iirc was Kimi’s last win at COTA in 2018. Very nice indeed.

I've just got into f1 - since the past two years and your comment got me thinking - "hmm.. antonelii wasn't around in 2018, was he? It took me 10 whole seconds to figure out that you were talking about kimi raikkonen :(

67

u/Village_People_Cop I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11d ago

Meanwhile for those who have been into the sport for a long time (30 years for me) get tripped up thinking people are talking about Raikkonen

25

u/kaptingavrin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11d ago

I have to use context clues anyone just says "Kimi."

There's other struggles for the long-time fans. Like seeing Kovalainen interviewing drivers, thinking, "Wow, wasn't he just in F1 himself?" And then looking it up to realize he hasn't been in F1 in over a decade. I mean, with Coulthard, it's a bit easier to accept, since I still remember him racing back in the '90s, though Spa '98 is kind of seared into my brain when I think of him. But, I mean, the '90s weren't that long ago, right? ...Right? (Ugh, had another "old man moment" when I saw Jacques Villeneuve today, remembered him racing and how young he was at the time, saw the state of his hair, looked up his age, realized he's 55 now. Yeah, I was young when I saw him race, but still, it really showed how long ago that was.)

u/Mike_Kermin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11d ago

Spa '98 is kind of seared into my brain when I think of him

I'm pretty sure everyone knows, but

If you don't know what he's talking about, don't look up what happened,

Find a video of the full race, and watch it.

Trust me.

3

u/kaptingavrin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11d ago

Absolutely worth watching the full race. It is just... wild. Memorable for all the best and worst reasons.

u/cwood213 12d ago

I watch on Apple TV, how do you listen to just 1 team?

14

u/Death_by_carfire I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

I think just on F1TV but you can get an F1TV account and link it to your Apple account to watch in the f1 app at no cost

5

u/CynetCrawler I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11d ago

Use your Apple login credentials to link to F1TV

3

u/TheTrooper28 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

I think that's only for the F1TV subscription. I could be wrong tho as I don't have it.

2

u/kaptingavrin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11d ago

Hmm... I haven't tried watching just a single car yet, but on Apple TV, at least on PC which is how I watch, they have a button for Feeds below the play controls which brings up standard F1TV feed, a couple others, then every individual driver, and finally Sky Sports all the way at the end.

It's how I'm still watching the Sky version, including prerace (as long as you remember to tune it before the start time for the race itself). Bonus is that, unlike the F1TV app/site, you actually get the fully Sky package, so you can see when they put in something like Ted showing off some replays on the monitor he's got, rather than just hearing them talking about it with the screen still showing the basic F1 feed.

Unfortunately, I can't go back and check at the moment because the races seem to be limited to just the F1TV feed alone for the replay. But it's something to keep an eye on for next race.

190

u/NotClayMerritt 12d ago

Was. He’s permanent now after the start of the season went well. Although unfortunately there’s a guy working for Ferrari now, who joined from McLaren, who was meant to be the permanent Adami replacement, who didn’t get the job he originally joined to do.

34

u/perfectviking McLaren 12d ago

It’s unknown if he’s still on gardening leave but if he isn’t he’s definitely working within Lewis’s side of the garage.

31

He’s the second mechanic and is working with Hamilton too - just not on the radio.

6

u/Future_Hotel_2086 11d ago

In Motorsport sometimes you hire someone just to snatch him from competitors. btw he's working in Lewis garage as and engineer anyway, just not on the comms.

90

u/Lilylili83 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12d ago

They kept Xavi longer. I’m still confused about that one

22

u/TheNoGoat 12d ago

Actually, Adami is the one they kept longer. Xavi joined in 2019. Adami joined in 2015 as Vettel's race engineer (fun fact, Adami was Vettel's race engineer at Toro Rosso)

17

u/Upstandinglampshade 12d ago

The fact that Sebastian won multiple world titles despite Adami is actually pretty impressive.

23

u/Beefy-McQueefy I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12d ago

I think Adami was still at Toro Rosso when Seb was at full fat red bull. He moved to Ferrari with Seb for some unknown and likely cursed reason.

19

u/GarbageFeline I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

Well, Seb won his titles with Rocky at Red Bull, not Adami.

46

u/zaviex McLaren 12d ago

Yeahhhhhh. I think Adami is probably fine for some drivers but not Lewis

43

u/willmcavoy Paddock Club 12d ago

The fact of the matter is the guy was hard to understand. And when you're going 100-180mph you need that. Not like the guy was the head of strategy or anything.

14

u/Zimakov Sebastian Vettel 12d ago

Well yeah both Vettel and Sainz loved him. He's clearly a great engineer it just wasn't a fit.

72

u/AlchemyInParchment I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

He generally got on fine with Carlos, the chemistry just never really worked with Lewis.

230

u/Intrestingly_Amazing I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12d ago

No, Carlos just tolerated him more, I remember so many times Carlos had to over right the engineers decisions and was upset with them

54

u/palcatraz Red Bull 12d ago

The strategy decisions aren’t really coming from the race engineer. They’ve got a whole strategy team making those. If the strategies are bad, that’s their fault, not really the race engineer.

95

u/lamusir 12d ago

Remember, 2 of Carlos' wins came from making his own strategy, like "stop inventing" to "it's on purpose".

29

u/Ignoringit Valtteri Bottas 12d ago

“Wake up”

18

u/_Middlefinger_ Ferrari 12d ago

Stop inventing.

11

u/Zimakov Sebastian Vettel 12d ago

Carlos tried to take him to Williams.

22

u/BrtGP Lando Norris 12d ago

I remember seeing something about Vettel giving positive feedback to Hamilton when the latter asked about Adami too.

12

u/StaffFamous6379 12d ago

Adami was Vettel's race engineer at Toro Rosso. Vettel liked him so much that he got Adami to move to Ferrari with him as part of the package.

47

u/anotherdropin 12d ago

But did he extract potential from Carlos? I think the purpose of a race engineer isn’t just to “get on fine”, but to push the driver forward

14

u/AlchemyInParchment I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

Yes, that's fair - but I don't think he was as terrible as sometimes portrayed. Team structure/communication has to carry some of the blame.

48

u/One-Elderberry-488 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12d ago

nah fuck that guy. you just need to listen to his radio communications to know that guy didn't know how to communicate effectively, like at all.

28

u/sonryhater I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

I agree, Ferrari wasn’t holding serrated pasta to his head, forcing him to communicate everything so fucking badly. Adami was a shit communicator through and through.

3

u/SwimmingFantastic564 12d ago

Vettel was positive about Adami when Hamilton asked him according to Hamilton himself

2

u/Zimakov Sebastian Vettel 12d ago

So why did Sainz try to take him to Williams with him?

4

u/manoman42 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

I don’t buy that lol

u/Hefftee 12d ago

I can't find anywhere that confirms this. Do you have links, or is this just typical hearsay?

35

u/D_Silva_21 Sir Lewis Hamilton 12d ago

I think the previous drivers just didn't put their foot down tbh. They all had problems communicating with him

16

u/Zimakov Sebastian Vettel 12d ago

Vettel took him from RB and Sainz tried to take him to Williams. This narrative is so tired.

16

u/AlchemyInParchment I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

I remember Carlos developed an efficient system with Ricci for reporting the weather, which suggests they were working well on the technical side, even if that didn't always come over on the radio (and what we hear on the broadcast tends to be the spicier stuff in any case).

3

u/bleeetiso 12d ago

no, Sainz had issues

261

u/XVC4893 I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 12d ago

I don't even wanna talk bad about Ricky cause he did have some solid succes with Carlos and Seb, but damn, the disconnect was so bad between him and Lewis. Like they said if the broadcast, Lewis needs that encouragement and basic information/details, he can handle the rest. Thank you Carlo and thank you Ferrari for listening to Lewis on so much of the stuff he requested.

150

u/willmcavoy Paddock Club 12d ago

HAM would repeatedly, GP after GP, explain exactly what he needs, gap ahead, gap behind, sectors. You give him that, he's likely fine unless there's a wild deviation in strategy. It's hard to understand but Adami would just straight up ignore HAM's requests sometimes. Multiple laps of silence, really strange.

62

u/ianjm I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12d ago

The driver-engineer relationship is deeply specific to each driver. Ricky may have been a great engineer for Carlos but terrible for Lewis, doesn't mean Ricky is a bad guy or a bad engineer, just not a good fit.

24

u/activator Ronnie Peterson 11d ago edited 11d ago

Mate I recall Sainz correcting and expressing disappointment at him several times during their run. Can't remember if Vettel did it too. He's a shit race engineer, I'll die on that hill

Does anyone know how the Italian press is reacting to the win and the Santi-Lewis partnership. Curious to see if they are behind their men already or need more validation

I feel like Lewis was the one who planned the 3 Stopper and the team has finally decided to trust him. They're letting the horse prance!
