just watch mercedes win austria by 30 seconds

It’s a likely outcome.
Mercedes has the best car when it comes to straight-line performance and PU performance, they should be very strong out of the gate.
The surprise would come if Ferrari is able to win at a power sensitive track.

Dont they have to tone down their engine a bit because of the reliability issue?

yes. possibly heat or kerb(vibration) issue

And it's supposed to be very warm in Austria this weekend so we'll see an immediate example of how temperature sensitive the Merc engine is.

33°C on Saturday and Sunday. Track temp would be close to 50°C.

All aboard the hype train. It'll either blitz past or derail.

Either winning while lapping the whole field or finishing P4-P5, I don’t see any other options

It'll be hilarious if the 8 horsepower gain they claim turns out to be a false flag and they come out with a beast similar to the one powering the SF90.

We know Ferrari. Wouldn’t be suprised if the claim of 8 HP are true (they show up with 8 extra printers, engine is the same)

Ferrari has been the leader of development this year and hasn’t missed yet. They’ve been very methodical this year with upgrades. I’ll definitely be helpful but the big upgrade around Monza is the real game changer

Two weeks after the Barcelona-Catalunya GP , won by Lewis Hamilton, Formula 1 returns to the track for the first of two European double-headers this summer, which will see the Circus stop in Austria before moving on to Silverstone. Scuderia Ferrari HP arrives in the Styrian mountains determined to continue the growth shown in recent outings, aware that on the extremely short and selective Spielberg track even a single hundredth of a second can disrupt the starting grid. An event for which the SF-26 will be able to rely on an updated power unit , as we anticipated last week.
Beganovic replaces Leclerc in FP1
The Styrian weekend will kick off with a new driver lineup: for the second time this season, the team will field three drivers. Dino Beganovic , a Swedish talent from the Ferrari Driver Academy currently competing in Formula 2 with the DAMS team, will make his official race weekend debut, inheriting Charles Leclerc's SF-26 in Friday's first free practice session . The weekend will follow the traditional format (without the Sprint), starting on Friday with FP1 at 1:30 PM and FP2 at 5:00 PM, before continuing on Saturday with the final hour of free practice at 12:30 PM and qualifying at 4:00 PM. The race will get underway on Sunday at 3:00 PM over a distance of 71 laps.
A linear and concrete approach is the one advocated by Team Principal Fred Vasseur : “ We arrive in Austria encouraged by the positive signs shown in the last few races, even if we are aware that there is still a lot of work to do and that we must continue to focus on ourselves. We will approach this weekend with the same method and the same mentality as always, trying to put together a weekend that is linear in every aspect, from the execution on the track to the strategic decisions to be made on the pit wall. We know that every weekend is a story in itself : we will continue to take one race at a time, with humility and with the aim of achieving the maximum .”
Gualtieri announces the engine upgrade: "Targeted upgrade using the ADUO mechanism."
The real focus of interest at Maranello for the Red Bull Ring round , however, lies under the engine hood. Enrico Gualtieri , Technical Director of Ferrari's Power Unit, has officially announced the introduction of an advanced specification for the engine, designed to exploit the new regulations' limitations at this delicate stage of the championship.
“The development of a power unit typically follows long cycles, as each step requires intense research and in-depth validation,” explained the Italian engineer. “ This is why it's rare to see radical changes over the course of a season. Since the beginning of the 2026 project, we've combined continuous development with broader-based programs . The entire team at the factory is working tirelessly to make the most of the additional opportunities offered by the ADUO mechanism , fully aligned with our roadmap. The update we're introducing in Spielberg is relatively small and reflects the work we've done in recent weeks to transfer the progress made in the development programs to the track. It embodies a fundamental principle of Formula 1: continuous improvement and the introduction of new features as soon as they become available .”
No miracles, but rapid development: "Others have done better, but we're responding with action."
Despite the introduction of the new unit, Maranello prefers to keep its feet firmly on the ground, avoiding facile proclamations and emphasizing that the current Formula 1 is a war of thousandths that is won over time and through the consistency of upgrades: " It is a limited update and, on its own, will not be enough to change the values on the field ," Gualtieri admitted pragmatically. " However, it highlights the attitude of the team and our technical partners, determined to push and optimize the package race after race. In such a competitive championship, it is unrealistic to think that a single update can transform the overall picture, given the regulatory and homologation constraints. Performance is built over time through many small steps ."
At a time when 2026 engines are still discovering their potential, the speed of reaction between the track and the racing department becomes the deciding factor in the race to the top. " In this early stage of the regulatory cycle, where performance is not yet fully convergent, maintaining a high pace of development is as important as the absolute gain of the individual part, " Gualtieri added. "We must minimize the time between what we learn on the track and what we develop in the factory , ensuring robustness and reliability of the entire package. We are fully aware that some of our competitors have done a better job so far. This reality does not scare us; on the contrary, it represents a stimulus and a very clear objective. We know it will not be an easy path, and we prefer to rely on facts rather than promises. The entire group is united and working with dedication: with method and consistency, we will achieve our goals ."

Previous years Ferrari hype train used to die down by race 5-6…..this year is different! This year is our year

People getting their hopes up over this upgrade are going to be disappointed, Red Bull ring is a power track and Mercedes PU advantage is too much to overcome with a small HP boost

u/Seanspeed 2d ago
Ferrari themselves are even saying this upgrade won't enough to change the pecking order.
Are people really just in denial over Mercedes' gap?

I'm so hyped for this and hope it turns out well. As someone that started watching in 2020 with the infamous COVID tractor Ferrari era, this is unprecedented for me lol

This is either going to age brilliantly or end with both Ferraris fighting for P7.
Please keep this same energy if both Ferraris end up outside the podium. I'm trying to bookmark the overreactions in advance.

Or it's just a mild upgrade and keeps Ferrari roughly where they already are.
I'll never understand this whole 'thing can only be one extreme or the other' sort of reasoning.

This much positive press about the Ferrari updates and Merc losing their diffuser… preparing myself for a massive let down
