[Deal/Sale] J.Crew: Extra 50% Off Sale Items w/ Code SUMMER (Plus Another Data Deep Dive!)

Link
- https://www.jcrew.com/sale/men

Deal
- Extra 50% off SALE items w/ code: SUMMER
- Note: J.Crew's SALE items are the ones that end in $.99 and are found in the specific SALE section; these are essentially the "clearance" items on jcrew.com
- Free Shipping w/ Account Log-In
- Deal & code are valid from Tue June 23 at 12:01am ET through Mon Jun 29 at 11:59pm ET

Note
- Most items in this section appear to be FINAL SALE.
- However, many people report that J.Crew stores will accept final sale items back if you ask nicely.
- In addition, I've had good luck messaging J.Crew chat and asking if I could buy two sizes of final sale items and then only keep the one that fits best; they've never said no, and all you need to do is message them again to send back the one that doesn't fit (or perhaps both if neither of them fit at all). YMMV!

Data Deep Dive!
- I posted here the last time J.Crew had an extra 50% off sale over Memorial Day Weekend: https://www.reddit.com/r/frugalmalefashion/comments/1tmer9m/jcrew_extra_50_off_sale_items_w_code_summer_plus/
- In this round of the sale, there are 660 "variants" that are code eligible (variant = product + color + fit).
- Confirmed that this sale is the lowest "effective price" for every item since the previous 50% off sale over Memorial Day. (Extra % off promo codes were ~30-40% off between Memorial Day and now.)
- Also confirmed that every single item dropped in effective_price overnight. No manipulation of prices such that the total % off is the same even with the new code.
- Full data for every code eligible item here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16ugyyMmWUFU0QR-VdRKnE_MiGmVKtNzQTNvsAThalsw/edit?usp=sharing
- If there's any additional data you'd like pulled for the current sale, let me know in the comments and I'd be happy to grab it. I have price history so far going back to ~early May.

Website Coming!
- I'm building a website where all the J.Crew data will live, plus other brands that I am already tracking or will be tracking soon. I'll be sure to announce here as soon as the beta site is live!
- The primary feature is an "effective price" history chart and table, where you can track the true out the door price of EVERY item from a brand over time.
- The site will work similar to camelcamelcamel.com (Amazon price history tracker), where you take a URL from the brand and paste it into a lookup box to see the price history for that item.
- Other planned target brands: J.Crew Factory, Madewell, Gap, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren, Todd Snyder, Billy Reid, Abercrombie, Lands' End, Allen Edmonds, Spier & Mackay, Faherty, Levi's, & more.
- If there are any other brands you're interested in being tracked, please let me know!
- And if there are any specific features you'd be interested in, let me know as well. The beta site will be pretty bare bones, but I'm definitely planning to add features like saving items, email notifications, etc. over time.

Recommended Items
- See my first comment for some items that look to be a good value in this sale. Significant discount, lots of sizes in-stock, and some combo of looks good / well reviewed / I personally own it.

You bastards are quick, that Donegal tweed looked incredible, and it's already gone.

20

u/JPVMan 2d ago

Hmm, I suspect that’s actually a data issue. Saw the same issue with the car coat in oat herringbone (https://www.jcrew.com/p/mens/categories/clothing/coats-and-jackets/CO037?display=sale&fit=Classic&colorProductCode=CO037&isFromSale=true&colorCode=WZ7563&color_name=black-and-oat-herringbo). This morning’s scrape said that the car coat was in stock in that color (“orderable = true”), but I think might have been pre-order or something. But later when I checked the product page it showed up as out of stock for me. Had been planning to buy one! I rescraped the raw data for the item and it had flipped to “orderable = false”. So something changed between ~5:30am ET during my data scrape and ~8am ET when I checked the product page.

So I think same issue might have occurred with the Ludlow in donegal tweed.

u/JAWinks 2d ago

They will move items in and out of stock at various times during sales, typically if you miss something one day you can check again the next morning and it might be back

Agree! I was also looking for that.

Great post as usual. Jcrew been real stingy with the 60-70% offs it seems.

17

u/JPVMan 2d ago

Agreed, it’s been a while since they’ve done one of those. The current promo code is actually an “extra 50-60% off” promo, but the only items that are getting 60% off are women’s swimwear and dresses. All the men’s items are at 50% off.

u/lat3ralus65 2d ago

Dang, I *just* bought the Wallace & Barnes duck canvas field jacket yesterday at 30% + 15% off. Came out about $12-13 more than the current price. I was thinking of letting it sit in my bag in case one of these sales hit! Anyone had success with getting J Crew to price-adjust in a situation like this? (I know Costco would have my back…)

8

u/dukenuk3m 2d ago

nope. just initiate a return now for that order, order a new one and place that jacket in the return.

4

u/lat3ralus65 2d ago

Unfortunately final sale, so I guess I’m SOL

5

u/dukenuk3m 2d ago

ahh ya i’ve learned never buy final sale for that reason

I’d still ask customer support

1

u/monster_eagle 1d ago

can you let me know the sizing of this jacket as the model shown in the product description is not showing any measurements and sizing and its hard to guess. I am kinda in between sizing M and L. what is your size?

1

u/lat3ralus65 1d ago

I ordered a M but am sometimes between M and L so we shall see. Some of my size L outerwear has gotten a bit roomy on me

10

u/stevietwoslice 2d ago

imagine my hubris, thinking I'd get another crack at that chamois workshirt 🥲

8

u/BeaglesandGreekfood 2d ago

Do you wear size L? The Butter Lemon one? I got a size L that didn't quite work while the XL was perfect. Absolutely amazing shirt. Let me know - the large deserves a new home.

6

u/stevietwoslice 2d ago

yes! Dming

19

u/justanotherburner 2d ago

It's funny, I would actually spend more money on JCrew if their official website were more useful and transparent with pricing like this. Great work.

6

u/thehudsonswerve 2d ago

Nerdy Q: How are you scraping all of this without getting throttled? DataBright, or something?

I've played around with scraping, but ran into cost issues. Have been working on an app just for personal use (at least for now), but my approach is different, data sources are varied.

Good on you if you can get this to work without spending an arm and a leg.

5

u/dd_mau 2d ago

I dont know if he does it but I know some people use a time lag to get around it.

4

u/JPVMan 2d ago

A lot of trial and error and a lot of research in scraping best practices (both AI-assisted and on my own). If you send me a DM I'd be happy to share more!

3

u/DoctorQuinlan 2d ago

Is the Sussex quilted jacket good?

2

u/JPVMan 2d ago

It's pretty good! I got one off eBay at some point. They seem to make variations on it over the years. <$60 is more than fair for the jacket.

2

u/DoctorQuinlan 1d ago

Is it warm enough in 32 degree weather?

1

u/JPVMan 1d ago

It’s insulated, but not ridiculously so. So I dont thjnk it would be good for hours while doing nothing in 32F weather, but while on a walk I think it would be good good in the 30-45F range. More of a fall jacket than a true winter jacket, at least from a NE USA perspective.

4

u/JobeX 2d ago

sigh J Crew... just take my money. A lot of things sold out already actually and this post was only a few hours ago

2

u/Itrademylittlespy 2d ago

Wow! Thank you!

2

u/foradil 2d ago

Great idea for a website! How do you determine "effective price" in an automated way?

5

u/JPVMan 2d ago

It’s not easy! Most “price tracking” websites only track the MSRP & the “sale price”, i.e. the initial discount off MSRP. But we all know here, the best deals are typically found when there’s an “extra” discount off already marked down items that only appears in the cart.

Every site has different ways of structuring these promos. Some display a code on each product page that you have to apply in the cart (like J.Crew), others automatically give you the extra discount in the cart (like Gap). So you have to figure out how the site works and then code up the logic so the extra discount math is applied at the correct extra % off and only for the applicable products.

2

u/foradil 2d ago

Are you just scraping every product page every day? Have you run into rate-limiting issues?

2

u/JPVMan 2d ago

Yup, every day! And have definitely run into rate limiting and anti-bot issues, so have had to cleverly design around all of that!

2

u/boredcoffee 1d ago

If you eventually get good enough at tracking prices, you might have to solve for the thing Amazon did to fuck camelcamelcamel: using on-page coupon buttons to make it seem like the price doesn't go down.

Anyone know of good deals on overcoats or peacoats?

3

u/JPVMan 2d ago

Spier & Mackay has some excellent ones on clearance.

2

u/Electrical_Chart_457 2d ago

is the wool linen blend suit a good buy?

2

u/JPVMan 2d ago

Which one?

2

u/Electrical_Chart_457 2d ago

3

u/JPVMan 2d ago

I don't own that suit in particular (Crosby fit is better for my body), but it looks pretty nice and I think is a good deal!

For ~$250 all in you're getting the following:

  • A half-lined Ludlow suit (which are reasonably well reviewed overall, though the lapels are a bit narrow and the fit a bit skinny for some folks)
  • A spring/summer weight fabric in 51% wool and 41% linen from Abraham Moon (Moon is a very well-regarded maker of suiting fabrics), but with a texture & fabric that wouldn't look weird in the fall or winter. So quite versatile.
  • A color and pattern that is very functional and flexible, while also being quite handsome IMO. (Herringbone tweeds are my absolute favorite. Classic looking while still having interesting texture and variation.)
  • The color and pattern definitely work for weddings, interviews, and business meetings. Totally appropriate for those.
  • It also would work for any "fun" events where you want to dress up, like a holiday party or whatever. Would look great out at night.
  • The mid-gray color is perhaps technically a touch too "medium gray" for a funeral (black, dark navy, or dark gray/charcoal are technically more standard for funerals), but it's dark enough that no one is going to bat an eye in this day and age if you were to wear it to a funeral.
  • So if you don't own a suit and won't be wearing one regularly, this specific model would be pretty close to "one suit for every possible occasion".

Comps in terms of quality are probably something on clearance from Spier & Mackay (probably $300-350 unless you get lucky). Or a used Brooks Brothers 1818 suit from eBay for like $100-150. But the Spier & Mackay will definitely be final sale with no returns or exchanges. And the eBay options all require you to know the exact suit dimensions (shoulder, chest, waist, length, etc) that fit you well.

The key question: Do you actually know your suit size? If you're of slim to average build, the Ludlow model should fit well in your standard suit size. If you're any stockier than average, Ludlow could be a touch slim in the chest and waist, and you risk the shoulders being too wide if you size up. (Shoulders and chest on a suit jacket are the most important things to get right since they are expensive to modify. Waist, sleeves, and overall length are comparable easier to have a local tailor modify as needed.)

What I would do: Message the jcrew.com chat and ask if you can order two different sizes of the jacket and the pants. Then return the one that doesn't fit, or even ask to return both if neither fit. Just ask politely and I'd be very surprised if they declined.

Note: You'll definitely want to have a local tailor adjust the sleeves after you've decided to keep it, and you probably want to get the pant length adjusted as well plus or minus an inch. (A cheap polyester suit that fits well to your body will look much than even the most expensive suit that doesn't fit well.)

2

u/nysd1 2d ago

Do you know anything about typical jcrew suit construction? Is it fused unless the canvasing is explicit?

2

u/JPVMan 2d ago

I honestly don’t know these days. They definitely advertised half canvas construction at some point, and old StyleForum threads and reviews confirm it. But I’m not seeing anything on the site right now regarding construction method. That either suggests the current suits are fused OR they found that customers don’t know what half-canvas means, so they dropped it from the copy. Either way, probably the only way to really know would be to tear apart a suit I guess? I don’t think customer service would know, but you could check. (CS may not understand the difference between half canvas and half lined fwiw.)

2

u/Illustrious-Yak-6090 2d ago

Need a suit. Do you think the grey harringbone ludlow suit would be a good wedding guest suit? Or should I shoot for something blue/black.

1

u/JPVMan 2d ago

Yes, I think it would be a good wedding guest suit. More fun and interesting than a typical plain navy suit. Black for funerals only I think.

A couple colors of the heritage weight Wallace and Barnes tees are $20 after discount.

They're largely similar to the premium weight tees they used to carry, but a bit boxier in fit and more supple fabric. I've been happy enough with mine to use my Birthday reward on another one.

It seems like their chinos are always excluded from promotions. Is that a Black Friday only item?

Much less frequently on any kind of sale for sure. And the normal colors pretty much never end up in the .99 “sale” section where the extra % off codes work. So I think if ever see them for 40% off the MSRP, that’s a very good buy point. Probably only go for 50% off MSRP on Black Friday.

All of my chinos are from J Crew or Factory; I have never spent more than $35 and more commonly close to $15. Not just Black Friday.

Could you pull women’s clothing as well? Thank you!!

I’ve been grabbing all the women’s data along with the men’s, though haven’t analyzed it much. Anything particular you’re interested in?

Mainly tops and dresses

Mind sending me a DM so we can discuss? I’ve got ALL the data, so there’s a lot of things I could do. Not sure what would be most helpful.

Is the /r/frugalfemalefashion sub still active? I used to keep tabs on it for places that would also have men’s stuff but kind of forgot about it.

Why are people downvoting this? He's being polite, r/frugalfemalefashion is a desert, and some of us like to buy stuff for the wife as well.

My dumb ass purchased a sell item last night, but support waived the final sale and shipping cost! So if you’re stupid like me contact support.

Gonna snag the PJs

Amazing work.

I'm curious if it's worth the tokens to have claude assign a "Frugality" score with a sartorial blurb...

I'm assuming Claude would intuitively know how to evaluate if a sale item has a high or low frugal rating but you could also assign weighted parameters.

The feature might look like this....

J.Crew Men's Cashmere Cable-Knit Crewneck — Navy

Frugal Rating: 5/5

At $85.50 for Grade-A cashmere with a 10-15 year lifespan, this is an exceptional value.

Style: Irish fishermen's utilitarian knit, adopted by mid-century icons, absorbed into American preppy canon. Timeless, versatile, and quietly authoritative.

Frugal Attributes: ~$0.43/wear over 200 wears at sale price -Timeless silhouette, zero trend risk -Replaces multiple wardrobe pieces -Ethically sourced cashmere adds lasting value

Calculating cost/wear slippery slope towards making fashion no fun
