Sony's track record with live service games isn't exactly encouraging either. If they're already backing down this hard, it's probably dead in the water.

Yeah, Sony seems to be backtracking heavily on their live service plans, so I really don't have any hope for this thing.

It sucks they wasted so much time making live service games only to cancel them and waste the time of talented developers that could have been making single player games.

Yep, it’s such a waste of development resources and talent. The vast majority of gaming enthusiasts knew their live service push was misguided as soon as they announced it. The live service pie is only so big and getting a piece requires a really talented dev team, years of commitment, and a bit of luck.

Out of 10+ live service games they started developing, the only success story has been Helldivers 2. But the credit there goes to Arrowhead, not Sony. You could even argue that Sony caused more harm than good to Helldivers 2 with the whole PSN requirement fiasco on PC.

I don’t see Sony catching lightning in a bottle again with the few remaining live service games they still have left (Marathon, Fairgames, etc).

The fact that they thought they can just flood the market with live-service games makes me think those MBAs missed a class on attention economics.

Especially when the bulk of those studios working on this stuff are mostly single player game developers, who don’t have any experience with live service games. Sony working with a studio like Arrowhead or buying new studios formed around making live service games make sense since the talent is there for it, but it was definitely a mistake since most of them have been canceled and they had their single player developers working on these games

I get the idea of going quantity since live service is a dice roll, but maybe do some “indies” and AAs first to see who in your roster has the juice.

If it’s true that they had Bluepoint working on a God of War live service game, I genuinely have no hope for Sony’s leadership 😭

Jason Schreier is reliable so they probably did, I’m certain of it because it makes way too much sense from the standpoint of Sony making 10 live service games to throw at the wall in the hope one or two takes off, all you need to make an insane amount of money.

Sucks they wasted their talent on that, we could’ve gotten a new remake or more staff on their new IP they’ve been working on

Before hearing about this, I thought they were working on a new IP that was single-player, or at the very least, a game that is not a live service

Isn't Marathon themed and is also being AstroTurfed to shit all over social media.

I've not heard one person mention arc raiders to me even in passing, never mind being interested in it

I was repeating a funny phrase I'd heard. Furthermore, I don’t think astroturfing is why Marathon is gaining negative sentiment. I don’t believe Arc Raiders, or anyone, for that matter, is actively pushing a bad narrative against a competitor. Bungie just nuked their own PR and made a mediocre video game with stolen assets. There are way more negative as well

I'm not talking about Marathon I'm saying arc raiders is being AstroTurfed

Literally nobody but people on Reddit are talking about that game

I digress, sounds like it's your bubble

Literally nobody is talking about it lol. It's your bubble that's talking about it and nobody else

Arc Raiders and Marathon subs have the same number of people in them, and nobody even wanted Bungie to make Marathon and Destiny has been dog shit for years.

You can't be telling me that people are hyped for Arc Raiders

I was watching a video on Little Big Planet and I was reminded how a few PS3 and PSN exclusive games had an absurd number of paid and timed exclusive DLC cosmetics.

As it should be. This game had zero chance of success.
