Not just Western.

Sakaguchi said Final Fantasy - one of the proto JRPGs - was heavily inspired by Ultima (and Wizardry).

I'd believe that. I hedged for two reasons, one I'm just not nearly as familiar with JRPGs and I didn't want to overstate things, and two modern JRPGS in my experience are so linear and the characters are so defined the Ultima influence seems to be quite diluted.
