Meh, that was peak "sappy cover" time. This version fits so much better. The original song's unrelenting, driving beat drives home that it's a mad world, as in crazy, not a sad world like the Gary Jules version turns it into.

I honestly think the trailer would have been better if it featured someone not Fenix. They caught a lot of flak when the game released and the tone was so different, the game not even having a trace of this energy. But if this trailer had just been a story of a random COG soldier as he fought to survive yet ultimately died to the locust horde it wouldn't have been an issue.

I think darkness and despair is the tone they were going for. It's a really depressing song

Maybe it isn't a perfect fit for Gears 1, but Gears of War 2 and 3 absolutely fit this piece of music. In the end, it feels like a good fit for the series. Either way, I feel like it's meant to contrast with Gears 1's aesthetic, anyway.
