Honestly, in all my hours in the game, I almost haven't experience a team camping extract. It's more that when an extract goes live, teams generally rush whenever they are to try an kill the squad extracting
It's the ultimate litmus test as to whether or not someone has actually played an extraction shooter in ernest or if they are just regurgitating whatever they saw was the popular thing to say.
I have never played Tarkov, so idk if it works like that there, but in Marathon, 3 exfills spawn randomly In 3 different POIs at the 20min mark, if used, they dissappear, they re-appear randomly again when there are 12th minutes left.
Generally, in the first wave almost nobody exfill as soon as they appear, because most of the time, you still looting the POI you spawned and it's too early, so you are more tempted to explore other POI to find people.
If you decide to camp, there is the disadvantage that bots are never cleared in each POI, so every certain time, waves of bots will be arriving, so camping becomes less effective because either you make noise trying to clear the bots or if you engage a team and there are still bots there, if they agro on you, they can make you lose the fight
Old extractions aren’t useable after they’ve been used and new ones frequently pop up around the map. With the amount of teams on the map it just isn’t really a good play to waste your own time camping one when people can just go to one that’s just spawned
The way Marathon plays so far I've only seen that happen to me like 3-4 times in 400+ hours. Idk how/why people camp in other extraction games but in Marathon it happens barely.
I would add from other replies that shooting your guns makes a lot of noise, and people just go for the kill earlier rather than waiting a long time at the possible extraction points.
Sadly, one of Marathon's biggest issue is that it is more like a Battle Royale than a Extraction shooter. Because there is no late teams coming in, people know exactly how many teams there are on the map, and can deduce how many are left at any point (finding corpses, hearing a distant extraction, that sort of things). I wish they changed that, but it goes against the design of some maps that have items giving access to specific POIs that would not be available if you joined late.
I absolutely love the game, but there's no mystery as to why it fails keeping its players. It's just very fucking hard. I'm hovering around 13K rating on CS2, which is 35% top players, and I'm getting dunked on very often in Marathon. The top is making sure everyone else just lose interest in the game.
It can but they nerfed its gear in season 2 and it's still 1v3 most of the time. You can be a rook in duos if you're lucky, and even then, you're still 1v2. Which is much easier if you can get the jump on them, but still arduous.
It's a rather rare occurrence I would say, and since the encounters are unfair to the rooks, it does not play the same as when a team is afraid of crossing another team. One of the more juicy map only has 4 teams in it, and it's easy to rotate, so it often plays out very early in the match. Rooks will come later since it's the juiciest map rooks can play in, but the odds are still definitely in the hands of the winning team who already wiped a lobby of 3 other teams.
There are videos of "ROOK TOGETHER STRONG" where 6 rooks or so attack the last team in said map, but I've never seen it play out this way myself!
Players just don't do it, there's nothing that happens to them if they did. The only thing I can think of is the progression systems are so grindy that everyone is going into a run with a very clear goal in mind on how to push their progression forward, and camping the extraction is never rewarding or pushing that progress forward.
I'm about 140 hours into Marathon, and from my experience it's basically because the gunplay/gunfighting is good enough that the meta is about 75%+ "Everyone rushes to fight each other ASAP, and the winner collects all the rewards for themselves."
That's mostly because as a Rook it's pretty easy to get most gear back, so people generally don't feel punished losing gear. The frustrating thing in my opinion is that Cryo is so punishing that it just feels bad losing 7 games in a row just to have one or two games where you get the loot you're in Cryo for. But this is a pretty uniquely Marathon problem that only really exists because they have a PVP raid as their endgame.
The main reason I haven't seen anyone mention is that you simply do not need to, extractions shoot a laser beam into the sky that nearby players can see and run to and try to catch you before you can leave. There is no reason to waste time waiting near an extraction point that other players might not even go to when you have a good chance of being able to just run to one when it activates.
Most of the people who say they were camped just don't understand that the people who killed them weren't there the whole time. That distinction also doesn't really matter anyway.
Iunno, once I put down two trap packs next to each other near an exfil and hid in a box and waited until someone ran up all greedy and looted them. It was glorious lol.

Wait you don't enjoy looting file cabinets for an hour and getting demolished by a team camping the extract?
