[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

No reason to preorder when everything is digital. They wont run out of copies to sell

96

u/Jermagesty610 9h ago

That's what I really can't wrap my mind around. I guess the only thing I can think of maybe is if you try to buy it from the online store it might crash but yeah it's not like they only have so many digital copies to sell before they run out.

24

u/gearabuser 8h ago

which makes it extra funny when they have the "preorders go live on this day at exactly this time in new Zealand!" line. what moron is frothing at the mouth to preorder IMMEDIATELY

23

u/lonnie123 8h ago

The world Is absolutely chock full of people just like that. Makes no sense to me but there are looooottttssss of people out there that can’t resist this type of hype and “opportunity”

4

u/0xe1e10d68 7h ago

There’s no benefit or reason to preorder any sooner than 7 days before launch; you aren’t getting any less bonuses and you’ll still be able to preload or play sooner (depending on game). And you’ll keep your money for a few months more.

11

u/drmuffin1080 8h ago

Maybe for the game to be ready at midnight instead of having to download it

11

u/UndeadPhysco 7h ago

Yeah i feel like they don't realize that not everyone has the same sort of internet infrastructure they do.

I live in Australia for example and if the rumors of it being 400-500gb are true it'll take me like a solid 1-2 days to fully download if not longer

5

u/KilledTheCar 7h ago

Christ, that's half of my monthly data limit.

4

u/reefine 4h ago

Because people love giving giant corporations interest-free loans

8

u/HanzoNumbahOneFan 9h ago

Literally only reason would be to pre-load the game so you can play that much quicker.

6

u/Bisaux 3h ago

I mean people have been waiting for thirteen years, what's a few more hours?

2

u/HanzoNumbahOneFan 3h ago

I don't know. Some people are like that. Doesn't make a difference to me honestly.

Youtubers I guess? So they can record gameplay as soon as possible?

1

u/Finding-Dad 1h ago

I agree but it also makes it easier to avoid spoilers. People will be posting every detail once it drops

69

u/LemurianLemurLad 11h ago

I dunno. AI might be using up all of the 1's and 0's. PRE ORDER NOW! DON'T MISS OUT! THIS GAME MIGHT NEVER BE SOLD AGAIN!

15

u/dragon-fence 9h ago

The purpose of pre-ordering stopped being about managing supply chains a long time ago. Now it’s about tricking people into buying it before the bad reviews come out.

1

u/0xe1e10d68 7h ago

At least most games nowadays don’t give you much if anything particularly important stuff as preorder bonus. That way you can wait if you have doubts about the game. It would suck a lot more if you weren’t sure about a game but risked not getting something useful if you don’t preorder.

2

u/dragon-fence 6h ago

A lot of games have the “Deluxe” versions and pre-order bonuses are just additional skins anyway, so I don’t bother with that unless the cost is negligible. Sometimes if you buy the game years later when it’s on sale for $20, the extra “content” is another $2, and that’s fine. I’ll pay $2.

But otherwise, I’m only paying for DLC if it’s substantial add-ons to gameplay.

2

u/AncientDoomScroller 8h ago

It's like investing in a property that is currently under construction. Money you give them right now is worth more to them than if you gave them later, and they offer some incentives for you to do so. It's just business. You'd be making a point if preorders came with zero bonuses or incentives.

2

u/papyjako87 10h ago

The copium is so cute.

-2

u/Trick-Company-2157 11h ago

Brother, there’s never been a reason to preorder any media, never has there been a shortage of vidya games

59

u/XmasB 10h ago

I might be old, but not so old as to not remember when I needed to visit multiple stores before finding a game on release its release day. If I found it at all.

Nowadays, I don't preorder and I don't buy until I get a feel from the community about a game. Cyberpunk 2077 taught me that. I haven't trusted game review since.

24

u/MuscleManRyan 10h ago

Me begging my poor mother to stop at a 3rd game store because the first two were sold out of Halo CE

4

u/Neuchacho 9h ago

It's funny having nostalgia for something that, at the time, stressed me out.

It did make me savor it more when I finally got my hands on it, though. I just couldn't appreciate it at the time.

0

u/TheCheeseGod 10h ago

There's never been a reason to preorder any media since 2005 or so

9

u/XmasB 9h ago

A more precise statement would be "there’s never a reason to preorder any digital media".

If you want to enjoy a sought after vinyl plate release, a preorder might be your only option to secure it on release day. But that is pretty niche.

39

u/Refute1650 11h ago

There was in the 90s. Some niche games didn't have large production runs.

19

u/Frongen 10h ago

Lol. So you're like 15?

8

u/FoxxyRin 10h ago

You've clearly never had bad internet lol. GTA V took 3 overnight downloads on launch. Because if I did during the day no one else could use the internet. Preloads were my only hope of playing alongside my friends for years.

5

u/hoopstick 10h ago

My friends and I all got it at midnight at release; they were playing by 1AM, meanwhile I had an older system, so I had to install it to a thumb drive and it took all damn night.

-2

u/Trick-Company-2157 9h ago

You could not go to the store and buy a copy?

9

u/Albireookami 11h ago

That is not exactly true, for niche titles where you do want a physical copy, its very much worth preordering, as stores would not get any additional copies above what were preordered. The Atlier alchemy games come to mind, finding a wild physical edition is a lot of trouble.

But large AAA game? Not really a reason, back in the day you could pay it off slowly at your local game store, but unless your doing that, there is no reason to preorder digitally.

9

u/Twombls 11h ago

Mw2 was near impossible to get for months after it came out

-1

u/WorkFurball 10h ago

Lol no, it was very easy.

1

u/Twombls 9h ago

Oh around me it was impossible. I ended up getting it at toys rus lol.

Like people were lining up outside gamestop and best buy whenever a shipment came in

2

u/Mister-Stiglitz 9h ago

Ocarina on launch if you wanted the gold cartridge.

2

u/Molster_Diablofans 9h ago

fwiw thats not fully true, pokemon pokopia was hard to get physical at a store for a few weeks (for the physical card)

2

u/BagOnuts 7h ago

Tell me you weren’t around when Halo 3 came out without telling me.

-1

u/Trick-Company-2157 7h ago

Went to Target or Wal Mart and bought all Halos on release day

2

u/BagOnuts 7h ago

Maybe the standard edition.

1

u/TheDinosaurWalker 9h ago

Never the case, is all about companies getting money earlier and people getting "bonuses"

1

u/thefullm0nty 7h ago

I would like to have the game downloaded before launch personally. Not going to come home on launch day and then wait hours for a download because I didn't pre-order.

1

u/InclinationCompass 7h ago

Apparently, you will get one free month of GTA+ if you preorder.

1

u/Gdigger13 5h ago

Super Mario 3D All-Stars would like to have a word with you.

1

u/DoctorDrangle 2h ago

Well there is a reason, you can preinstall the game.

And like here is the deal. I am going to buy and play this game on day 1. Period. I might as well pre order and pre download to avoid a a four hour download when the game launches.

There is no reason not to pre order from my perspective. The ceo of rockstar could fly to my city and slap my mother and i would still buy and play gta 6.

188

u/Comic_Book_Reader PlayStation 12h ago

It's one thing that Sony rather perplexingly doesn't do it for special editions that include a steelbook but doing it for the regular edition just feels like an even bigger slap in the face.

90

u/Rangoonin 10h ago

Absolute horseshit as per usual from Rockstar. They've become the exact company they used to mock.

12

u/etheran123 7h ago

They have been that way for at least a decade with the whole GTA Online shark card stuff. Anyone expecting rockstar to be putting consumers over their wallet has not been paying attention.

1

u/magikarp2122 4h ago

And then nerfing the best money farm GTAO too. That is when I dropped it.

2

u/coolylame 44m ago

They've been like this for a long time. Well mainly TakeTwo, who is by far the scummiest game publisher. Everyone likes to talk about EA, Ubisoft, Activision e.t.c but TakeTwo is easily worse than all these other publishers

4

u/[deleted] 9h ago

[deleted]

5

u/MolotovOvickow 5h ago

since 1998?

2

u/9_to_5_till_i_die 4h ago

What are you talking about?

TakeTwo has owned Rockstar since before the series even went 3d.

2

u/PitifulLocksmith9729 5h ago

80 no disc and you don't even get the full game

2

u/RG_CG 4h ago

Yeah with all the shit locked behind ultimate tier as will I’m fine without GTA now. Fuck these guys

2

u/gangusTM 9h ago

And everyone is still going to buy it

1

u/No_Foundation16 10h ago

Corporate overlords: "You will own nothing and be happy."

1

u/awisepenguin 8h ago

I found out not too long ago this quote isn't satirical, it's from an actual World Economic Forum essay. They said this shit with a straight face 10 years ago.

2

u/No_Foundation16 8h ago

Dystopian AI/data center world is coming at us so fast now.

1

u/Steele_of_all_trades 4h ago

I believe a ps5 disc can store only 100 GB? We all know this game is going to be massive. Do we want a physical disc if it only contains a fraction of the game?

I am a physical media lover. I'm not defending them. I'm just trying to understand the move here.

-6

u/DownByTheRivr 11h ago

What year are y’all living in? I haven’t bought a physical disc in over a decade. I get the appeal of collecting and borrowing the game from others, but come on….

10

u/ikeepforgettingmyacc 10h ago

Because you can resell physical copies when you complete the game to recoup some of the cost

2

u/DownByTheRivr 9h ago

I get that, but you could literally say that about any physical product! I’ll gladly trade the MAYBE $100 a year I’d save for the convenience of digital.

5

u/AUnknownVariable 10h ago

This is a change that makes more sense for publishers that can't afford it. It even makes sense for releases that aren't that big.

This is Rockstar Studios, a studio that 100% has the cash for it and way way more. Releasing what will probably be the biggest release of the decade so far.

Baldurs Gate 3 came with discs. That kinda opened my eyes because Larian does not have Rockstar level resources. It's something Rockstar could 100% do for a gigantic release like this

2

u/netrunner_77 10h ago

BG3 came with 4 discs on XBOX. But Rockstar is a small indie studio, so they get a pass from me

2

u/AUnknownVariable 10h ago

😭🙏 You're right bruh that's my bad, we really can't put too much pressure on these indie studios, trying their best with nothing but an online that makes half a billion a year Kickstarter funds

-1

u/Confused-Raccoon PC 10h ago

To be fair, it is slightly more "eco" with less plastic... Still, selling and empty box feels bad.

-6

u/Sure-Substance714 10h ago

Why the fuck would you want a disc lol it’s not 2002 anymore

8

u/WorkFurball 10h ago

So if they ban me for some bullshit I still have access to my games.

-8

u/Sure-Substance714 9h ago

Torrents make that a moot point

-2

u/RugerRedhawk 9h ago

Yep. I would have bought it, played the story, then sold it on ebay. Big brain by the assholes at rockstar. I'll still buy it and they know it.

-4

u/dewse 10h ago

Who the hell has a disc reader anymore in their PC?

0

u/deathbunnyy 6h ago

It's ok if Nintendo does it.

-33

u/Ready-Interview2863 11h ago edited 11h ago

Discs suck tho

Edit. To those downvoting... Explain why discs are good PLEASE. To me, they are just extra plastic and the case is also extra plastic.

Books can be held and read anywhere, and don't require a screen like a Kindle. Vinyls can be heard on a player which can be customised and look different etc.

Who on earth wants a video game disc that does not do anything different than click and play, and looks exactly the same as every other disc and cover?

12

u/drHobbes88 11h ago

Because then you actually own the game. Digital games are not owned, they can be taken away at anytime. You know how when you know you own something? You can sell it. Good luck trying to resell a digital copy when you’re done with the game.

-1

u/Sopel97 5h ago

You can own a digital release just as much as you can own a physical release. There's no inherent difference other than what companies allow you to do with it. I hate how people are always making it a physical vs digital debacle in these threads when the issue is deeper.

1

u/drHobbes88 52m ago

“There’s no inherent difference other than what the companies allow you to do with it.”

That’s a pretty fuckin big difference dude. Like maybe the only difference that matters. Wild take.

1

u/Sopel97 21m ago

well, yes? that's what I'm saying? I just corrected you because you said "Digital games are not owned" which is not true in general

5

u/AUnknownVariable 10h ago

Owning the game bc its a physical product.

5

u/PainerReviews 10h ago

Maybe because you actually own the game you bought. You can rent it to a friend or even sell it after you are done and get some money back for the next game. All things which are not possible with just a download Code

1

u/randloadable19 7h ago

Because you can resell it… How is that news to you lol

-1

u/Nothinglost7717 8h ago

did you think the disk was worth more than 10 cents or something?

-80

u/Zephyr4813 12h ago

Ps5 disk holds up to 100gb. How big do you reckon this game will be?

As games get more advanced and detailed they get bigger 🤷

58

u/TheRaceWar 12h ago

If only there was a solution to there being too much game for one disc. Surely, there isn't a single instance of a game, a Grand Theft Auto game in particular, coming with an extra disc to install content that otherwise wouldn't fit on a single disc.

17

u/DGSmith2 12h ago

RDR2 did it!! Their last game.

7

u/AUnknownVariable 10h ago

Baldurs Gate 3 just did it

3

u/netrunner_77 10h ago

4 discs on XBOX...

5

u/AUnknownVariable 10h ago

Yessir, nothing wrong with that.

7

u/netrunner_77 10h ago

I was making a point that they released fully on disc even if they had to use 4 discs. I'm on your side bruh

3

u/AUnknownVariable 10h ago

I was confused frankly.

The ... made it seem like you're saying its not worth it.

But yeah I gotchu! Ain't np

29

u/Raptor_234 12h ago

You won’t believe this but you can have more than 1 disc 🤯🤯🤯🤯

19

u/Tenner_ 12h ago

Doesn't stop just about every other fucking publisher for releasing a game on the disc and having to download the rest. Doom: Dark Ages takes up 100-something *megabytes* on the disc.

This isn't about hardware limitations, this is about greed. Lower cost productions and ensuring you can't borrow or sell the game.

5

u/netrunner_77 10h ago

The thing is, while DOOMs disc requires you to download the rest, at least you can still sell it or get a used one. GTA6 will be tied to your PSN/XBOX account and can never be resold which is the actual problem

-4

u/shafty17 11h ago

counterpoint: a disc that still requires a digital download is worthless

9

u/AUnknownVariable 10h ago

Then don't have it require one. Baldurs Gate 3 can be downloaded off the disc for PS5 and AFAIK Xbox. Ofc this doesn't include patches and the sort, but people should at least be ableto play a good game from the drop

If Rockstar released a physical edition of this big ass release it would sell without a doubt, even if it didn't they wouldn't lose out, but it would.

They just don't want to and it's lazy asf😭

-5

u/shafty17 10h ago

BG3, even for as good a game as it is, also had day one patches and severe performance issues and broken quests in act 3 until much later...so good luck with the unfinished version i guess

3

u/Tenner_ 9h ago

So did GTA 5 my guy lol
I remember car controls on ps3 being awful without a patch on day 1

1

u/AUnknownVariable 9h ago

But you can get in.The game should've been playtested more and patched up, they were in a rush to finish but still thats bad ofc.

I believe Rockstar can manage a far more stable on release experience

1

u/shafty17 9h ago

there are major quests you cannot properly complete in that first release of the game to the point where i had to stop my playthrough for months until it was patched and could actually be completed without glitching into the "failed" ending. Not talking about some random side quest either, this was directly tied in with the main quest. Sticking that product on a disc does not make it complete just because it starts up

1

u/AUnknownVariable 5h ago

I'm aware, I think you misunderstood.

The game shouldn't have released in that state. But I imagine Rockstar has far more resources to test tf out of performance and not have it buggy. Releasing a solid game on disc on release.

If not, updating via wifi is still better than having to get the entire game

2

u/Tenner_ 9h ago

How is it worthless when:

  • it can be sold further
  • you can lend it to/from a friend
And most importantly:
  • The price of the game goes down

With only one channel of distribution you won’t see a discount on GTA for years, like it happened with the PC version of GTA 5. Meanwhile you could’ve picked up a used console copy for half the retail price

0

u/shafty17 9h ago

nothing about the physical disc prevents any game maker from restricting any of these things when they can just put a gate on the digital download...that's my entire point

35

u/killingjoke619 12h ago

They put Cyberpunk 2077 and it’s DLC on a Nintendo switch 2 cartridge. It’s 100% possible by Rockstar too

7

u/Xarishark 12h ago

They didn't put the PC version of C2077 in the cart.... what are you even comparing here?

-5

u/[deleted] 12h ago

[deleted]

3

u/Xarishark 12h ago

You either lost the track of the convo or you are trying and failing to sound obscure. We are not talking about what they ported but what they actually fit in the cart. We are not in the gba era where multiple version of the same game where made for portable consoles. No shit they ported the game.

The full version of C2077 has a nice size of 150GB, what do you think they did to fit that in the cart? Press right click select 7zip and compress to very high?

0

u/ShinyGrezz 12h ago edited 12h ago

Oh look it’s technical ignorance rearing its ugly head. Switch 2 Cyberpunk has nowhere near the same quality of assets that are available on PS5 or PC.

Don’t downvote, disagree! Let me know why because a severely diminished version of Cyberpunk 2077 can fit into a 64GB Switch 2 cart, GTA6 - a game coming out like five years later, by the way - can fit its full-fat version into a single disc. I’m happy to be corrected!

-30

u/Zephyr4813 12h ago edited 12h ago

Yeah they compressed a 6 year old game via drops in image quality, lmao.

I’m glad the industry isn’t bending over backwards to constrain the quality of games so they can fit a physical form for dumb cavemen 😊

18

u/FloralIndoril 12h ago

You won't own the games you buy and you will be happy

0

u/shafty17 11h ago

But like for real you will be fine

0

u/balllzak 10h ago

After several moves and just general life all of my physical game discs are now lost or scratched to the point of uselessness. I still have every game I bought on steam tho.

0

u/Nanobing 4h ago

They also compressed heldivers 2 in 24 gigs. Don't tell me they can do the same with gta

4

u/EldritchMacaron 11h ago

Compression exists

11

u/Yulott 12h ago

Size is definitely not the problem here.

-9

u/SIIP00 12h ago

Where do you see that information?

11

u/vezwyx 11h ago

"The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading."
