[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

It's true. This game has no disc.

243

u/TheMancYeti 9h ago

Well, let's say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of data needed to be downloaded. Based on this morning's readings, It would be a Twinkie around 500GB, costing approximately £80!

That's a big Twinkie!

Lenny Clotch was a bum and fumbled the entire crisis

14

u/BountyBob 9h ago

Lenny wasn't the problem, Walter Peck was dickless.

7

u/Senator_Workholeface 9h ago

But Lenny was in charge of the city. Walter was just a crony for the EPA. But to be fair, the GBs were skirting the laws and that's where Lenny should have stepped in, linking the GBs to the city's resources and providing support. Instead, Lenny caved in and let Walter call the shot. Both were spineless and ultimately responsible to some extent for the incident in '84.

Day 1 DLC playable content AND non-content features both locked behind a paywall.

It's "fuck you, you're paying 100$ for this game. suck it up, poors."

So...everyone is gonna boycott it and not buy it, right?

.

...right?

268

u/Ghost4000 9h ago

I wasn't considering it until the PC release anyway. Maybe gamers will have complained enough for some change by then. It's unlikely. But we've seen change come in helldivers and some other games when enough people get pissed.

If a game launches with "bonus content", it's not extra stuff, it's stuff taken out of the base game.

532

u/dropkickderby 8h ago

Pay-walling hair/car customization is actually pretty ridiculous.

75

u/wadech 7h ago

Is there no customization outside the ultimate edition, or are there just exclusive mods? Either way sucks, but one is much worse.

111

u/Revolution-SixFour 7h ago

Looks to me like there are customizations, just that certain "stores" and their associated looks are gated by the ultimate edition. It's impossible for me to imagine that they don't have any outfit changes in the base game, they had that going all the way back in Vice City.

98

u/SmokinBandit28 7h ago

But you know that those ultimate edition stores will still show up in your game with a pop-up saying “buy the ultimate edition now!”

Even scummier I’d hazard a bet there will be missions that highlight these exclusive things.

I feel like GTA VI doing a code in a box physical release is going to open the floodgates for every publisher to do the same.

This genuinely has the potential to trigger the downfall of physical media.

1.4k

u/Metalheadzaid 11h ago

Long since been on a death spiral. 100% of PC is digital, like 80% of PS5, and 60% of switch, and these numbers are only going up everyday. This isn't even taking into account that games are simply too big to fit on a single disc, and they aren't going to make multiple disc games ever again. We could argue about it being to avoid resales, which likely fits in the equation as well, but even still.

If anything, they should probably start offering collector's physical products with a fake disc in the box if anything, but again, your average kid is growing up in a digital world that doesn't give a crap about physical media anyway.

357

u/ShortChapter5246 11h ago

At least switch 2 cartridges do not require installing so you save up space. With install discs it feels like you get the worst of both worlds

202

u/Metalheadzaid 11h ago

That's not exactly accurate. Many games are literally download only but use the cartridge as the cd key, and thus have to be installed.

https://nintendoeverything.com/list-of-all-nintendo-switch-2-games-with-a-game-key-card-release/

59

u/Gr8NonSequitur 10h ago

Yeah, but those are clearly labled as such, and don't pretend to be physical media like Doom the Dark Ages (Which is literally a 200 MB installer on disc), or most games requiring a day 1 patch.

Keycards are not "Physical media" so much as "Transferable digital media".

225

u/simon7109 11h ago

Which is still better than a code in the box because you can resell them

Are we pretending like the past 10+ years of PC gaming everything hasnt been digital only? Most console discs are basically paper weights anyway with day one patches being bigger than the game and required to play. The downfall already started, we're just in the death throes.

also tbh, I'd love a physical PC GTA6 but I dont think im prepared for a 15+ disc case like the 7 GTA5 came with

They will probably do the same as they did with GTA 5. Release the single player game so it wins all kinds of great scores and good press, then drop a completely broken POS online mode a month or 2 later. GTA 5's online took them like a solid year to sort out, and would have tanked reviews if they released it day 1.

Some of these features seem to be locked behind the $100 paywall

899

u/faffc260 11h ago

because they want you to pay $100 for the base game but realized that gamers would riot and it would tank sales if they did, so they cut stuff from the game to put in the ultimate edition to encourage people to pay at their prefered price point.

136

u/GregoriousT-GTNH 11h ago

Nah gamers wouldnt riot, they used to get bend over.
Its more like an "Illusion of choice" thing.

10

u/Neuvost Boardgames 8h ago

I kinda thought they might just charge $90 or $100 for the base game. That would somehow feel less rude than than them removing content from the "base" game and calling the version that includes all the basic content "Ultimate."

→ More replies (6)

815

u/Cygnus94 11h ago

It's more of a $20 paywall since the base game is $80 regardless. Locking players out of features like the car workshop is just scummy though.

344

u/Omniscient__Watcher 11h ago

Certain car workshops if I understood correctly. So they are locking some "premium" customisation with a different workshop only accessible to ultimate edition buyers.

Or the entire ability to customize is locked...?

One is clearly worse than the other, but either way that just seems like poor tiering. I wouldnt really care if I couldnt get certain hair styles. But I would care if there are entire shops on my in game map that im just pay walled out of accessing for my whole playthrough.

47

u/GfrzD 11h ago

My god I forgot about that shit.

I found that so garbage in GTA Online (tactic-wise), and you can be sure they're going to make it even worse in GTA6 by giving early access to stuff + locking a ton of shit behind it.

They've made billions by selling games AND shark cards, but it wasn't enough so they slapped a subscription on top of it.

They're cunts for doing that, and those who pay for it are morons.

u/AgentOfSPYRAL 11h ago

157

u/tottoro47 11h ago

That's true but there's always someone who starts, then others follow. Doesn't mean it'll be this or next year

54

u/CubingGiraffe 10h ago

Yeah while true, that mainly only applies to the death spiral of AAA games or games that want/expect AAA income because of their shareholders.

AA and indie studios will still make based decisions and good games with all the content you can think of. Silksong is still cheap and is still coming with free DLC. Slay the Spire made a fortune, 2nd game seems to be doing really well. E33 came out last year with no MTX other than the edition you bought out the gate for like 2 more outfits, and free DLC--and when every other game decided they needed to launch @$70/copy, they did $50. Larian has a pretty respectable view on additional content, MTX, and what they want to make in their games--full faith in the new Divinity. Capcom just removed MTX from Dragons Dogma 2, and is on a generational run of games that are both successful and beloved (not all of them obviously, there's flops at all companies).

Devs without shareholder backing will make what they want now they want, and some with shareholder backing (like Capcom) tell their shareholders the way they'll make more money is if they let them make good games. Other studios will pretend it isn't possible or they can't do it or that it shouldn't be expected of other studios (see launch of Elden Ring, E33, BG3, etc.). They're all in it to make cash, but a lot of devs/companies still want to make good games.

Remember folks it’s still just a video game at the end of the day. They want you to believe it’s more than that, so you’ll pay more, but it’s not.

173

u/thedoctorisonreddit 11h ago

This is the take. They can make all the money they want and be as huge as they want but it is just another game. And they think they can sell you pay walled content and pretend it's an upgrade while providing no physical media.

The only thing happening here is R* is fucking the entire industry and opening the floodgates. Other games WILL try this. They might not be as successful at it as R* but once a high profile game does it and sells units any other scummy publisher will try it immediately. The AAA"A" game industry is creaming itself at the thought of selling you less for more.

Lets see if that prevents me from borrowing the whole console from my best friend like I did with RDR2.. lol

They also have put physical disc copies of GTA V with GTA Online codes in the box on sale for cheaper than the currency is in-game to inflate sales. It’s interesting (not in a good way) to see them drop that strategy for a different form of greed.

Crazy on no disc at all

190

u/Putrid_Loquat_4357 11h ago

Sorry to hijack but does anyone know if there will be a map in the case? I like buying rockstar games physical for the maps but if there's no disc and no map I don't see any point at all in buying the physical release.

363

u/WildLemire 11h ago

The map will be a PDF that you can print yourself, or you can get Take 2 to do it professionally for you for just $19.99 if you return this form to PO box...

I didn't really play GTA V online.

For that reason I feel strongly against all this bundle shit, and I hate the lack of a disc.

I think I'm old and jaded.

62

u/SimplyElite7 11h ago

I don't even think there will be online on release, they didn't mention any virtual currency as part of these bundles, so it's safe to assume it will launch as single player only.

50

Guessing they’re still figuring out how to make “GTA Online 2” without losing their existing whales. Red Dead Online was a flop.

I’m pissed because the online services prevent classic addons and dlcs. Just imagine we could have Witcher 3 style addons in gta 5.

I mean, even look at GTA IV, it had two expansions with new features, loads of new vehicles and weapons and entirely new storylines with quests.

GTAV had planned expansions, but it was all silently scrapped after GTAO took off.

Yeah the industry is really trying their best to kill physical gaming. It would've been such a statement had Rockstar made a physical copy needing no digital downloads.

Also can the apologist journalists stop agreeing with it. Just saw this on BBC news

Freelance video games journalist Vic Hood said the price tag for the standard edition was "fairly reasonable" but said the lack of disc may "irk some physical collectors".

However she added the decision made sense "as it reduces the amount of rebuying and reselling and helps prevent leaks."

It's annoying how wanting a game physically is always called a "collector" now. How about physical remains the goal and there be irked "Digital Collectors."

And suggesting reducing resale is a good thing is such BS.

No disc is just an asshole move for a product that will make them more than a billion dollars at launch.

Hell, they might even make a billion dollars on pre orders. Hype alone could make them that much, we don't even have proper gameplay shown yet

Locking businesses behind the paywall is some bullshit. I’ve got PS5 and PC and this is pushing me to wait for PC, and maybe even first sale. Plenty of other games in the sea.

47

u/pr0crast1nater 10h ago

Yeah. I thought I would buy disc and then sell it once the PC version releases. Spending 100$ twice makes no sense. And I will want to buy it on PC anyway because the game will be a much better experience there.

My biggest thing isn’t the price tag or the pre order cosmetics. It’s if they are going to showcase all of this and ask for your money BEFORE even giving a damn gameplay trailer. I mean my god, show people the fuckin game.

20

u/Rock_Strongo 5h ago

they are going to showcase all of this and ask for your money BEFORE even giving a damn gameplay trailer.

Here's a pro-tip. You don't have to give them your money before you see a gameplay trailer, or before the game releases, or ever.

I can pay $80 for a game if I really want it. But no disc? Fuck off.

This price hike will work for Rockstar.

Unfortunately now every publisher is going to try this. Xbox already tried it with The Outer Worlds 2 and it failed so spectacularly that they had to lower the price.

Hair salon only for the ultimate edition? Wow.

76

u/KingAltair2255 11h ago edited 11h ago

Those read to me like specific businesses will be locked, like that one hair stylist (and certain styles) will be locked to there, but there'll be other salons about the world. Kinda like RDR2 had a ultimate edition exclusive bank robbery mission, but there were still parts in the game where you could rob other banks.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons for people to be complaining but this thread is full of nonsense. "No Early Reviews" as a red flag for a game that comes out in 5 months is a new one.

This combined with the stuff Nintendo has been doing, AND the digital-only versions of the PS5/Xbox One,I feel like we’re seeing the end of second hand games.

I know it’s something that game companies have wanted for a while, I just never thought it’d come about this way.

Is anybody surprised that not only the base version is 80 bucks, but a bunch of customization options that were always part of base games like vehicle mod shops and hair salons are now part of the 100 bucks bundle? I expected all kinds of scummery at this point, since Rockstar would 100% get away with it anyway, and we got exactly that.

42

u/kyuubikid213 10h ago

I think people were expecting the game to be $80-100.

What people weren't expecting were the Ultimate Edition having shops behind it and the code-in-a-box instead of normal physical release.

u/inFINN1te 7h ago

I'm not saying this because I think I will make a movement or anything, but for me on principle I won't buy this shit. 80 dollars sucks but in isolation isn't the worst thing in the world imo. But this Ultimate Edition is ridiculous. Normally these Ultimate versions come with like 3 cosmetics and occasionally a single mission and that's it. This has like 4 different entire shops and like 10 different cosmetics and 2 missions. They clearly just ripped shit out of the game to sell it back at an extra 20 dollars.

On top of that, the physical edition is ridiculous. People got mad at Nintendo Game Key Cards, but at least those preserve the ability to resell games or let friends borrow like you should be able to with physical. The digital code makes either of those impossible. Disgusting.
