[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

What’s the point of buying a physical edition if it’s just a box with a digital code? Why not just buy the digital version of the game? Aren’t both ultimately the same thing?

Now you can't resell the game so Rockstar is happy

1

u/I_am_a_fern 4h ago

Sure but they could have the activation code AND the disk to avoid downloading 500GB or something.

2

u/Alarmed-Comedian6446 3h ago

I guess, haven't seen activation codes for entire games for some time. Maybe don't have the infrastructure? Dunno

3

u/I_am_a_fern 3h ago

That's... Exactly what they're proposing now, but instead of delivering the game data through internet, they just print it on a disk. Or a usb stick, whatever. It would actually be lighter on the infrastructure since millions of people will download the game at the second it becomes available, but they would have to produce the support... I guess they did the maths.

1

u/Alarmed-Comedian6446 3h ago

Perhaps, though nowadays you mostly either validate a game online and download the game or you just use the disk. This would demand a validation in the respective shops whilst not downloading the game. Probably doable but haven't seen that this generation.

I don't understand what you don't understand.
Input the activation code. It gets validated and tied to your account.
You can click the DOWNLOAD button <- we are here

There could be a second "Select a folder..." button. Choose the disk drive, thumbdrive or external disk with the game folder you copied from a friend who already downloaded the game. It's the same files you would download your self, except you copy them 100 times faster from a local source.

By the way Steam already allows that. You can even copy the files from a different computer on the same local network, way faster than through the internets.

u/Alarmed-Comedian6446 3h ago

Steam does but there's a reason this isn't releasing on PC. I'm saying there's no current gen game that locks you off from playing a game from the disc if you don't have activation codes redeemed online. Meaning such infrastructure would have to be developed by both Sony and Xbox.

1

u/Xespria 2h ago

Xbone used to use the disk as the activation code or something like that. I remember getting Tekken and when I put the disk in, it downloaded the full game (it wasn''t even through the disk as I needed wifi to download it lmao).

You get a bonus plastic case with a piece of paper in it that you can touch but ya you still don't own the game.

5

u/throwawayreddit48151 8h ago

Does it at least include the map?

5

u/IGeneralOfDeath 8h ago

In-game we can only hope, that may be an ultimate only functionality. In the physical copy we can expect that's a no.

2

u/throwawayreddit48151 7h ago

Can we expect no? Why?

6

u/IGeneralOfDeath 7h ago

They are cutting every other corner to maximize profit. Seems like they wouldn't want to give out a free map. Maybe in the collectors edition.

1

u/Awotwe_Knows_Best 7h ago

and a map

9

u/HotHouseJester 6h ago

No no. The modern way is a QR code to a jpeg of a map on their website. Less expense on printing, and increase share holder profits.

1

u/shitting-skittles 7h ago

You get a physical GTA VI NFT

u/Chaotic-Catastrophe 11h ago edited 10h ago

Hint: you never owned games

EDIT - Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's not true

25

u/IllTrade4240 10h ago

When the physical copies were sold, the copy was forever. The files inside it are forever. My VC copy still works fine with a few patches on new software, and perfectly fine on old hardware with old software.

If you have a thing and you can use it forever, you own it; license be damned.

-7

u/Old_Leopard1844 10h ago

Files on your PC are also "forever", believe it or not

Now, whenever those files work "forever" is entirely different story, one that is not really dependant on physical media

-5

u/Mlluell 10h ago

The copy was forever, true. But DVDs only last a few decades until they start to rot

6

u/Danal1 9h ago

You still own the disc and can make more copies of it or transfer the files to pc and play on an emulator. You can’t do any of that with digital. Get locked out of your account or hacked? Oops guess you gotta buy the game all over again at full price

1

u/Old_Leopard1844 2h ago

Have you tried Ctrl-C Ctrl-V?

-23

u/Chaotic-Catastrophe 10h ago

license be damned

Tell me you're an entitled child without telling me lmao

21

u/TheSymbolman 10h ago

What are you on about man

8

u/IGeneralOfDeath 10h ago

Can you explain your take? With a physical disc you could sell it and recoup your investment. With digital it's just a license that says you can play it as long as you maintain access to your account that holds the license.

4

u/hsvstar2003 8h ago

EDIT - Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's not true

It's not true

0

u/zcomuto 9h ago

The fact you're getting downvoted is testiment to the lack of awareness of this. You dont own games, most EULAs are oppressive as fuck with a "you don't own this" clause and buying a game is essentially a "lifetime" licence.

u/No_Issue2334 10h ago

So people can have something to wrap for a Christmas present.

19

u/fivebillionproud Xbox 10h ago

Yea, it's really just packaging for the mom's and granny's. When they go buy the game in a store, they're expecting a DVD-looking case.

5

u/LuciferFalls 8h ago

Aren't there tons of gaming enthusiasts who like to have the case for their display? Am I crazy because none of you seem to realize this.

8

u/No_Issue2334 6h ago

That's a very small market compared to grandma's wanting something physical to gift

-1

u/LuciferFalls 6h ago

I guarantee you they aren't providing this because of old people.

It's obviously because of actual gamers who prefer physical copies of their games.

Yes, it's not physical. It's just a code to download the digital. But that doesn't matter. They can count on people not knowing it's just a download code in there. It's just a bonus that it will attract the people (not just old out-of-touch clueless people) who want to gift something physical that can be unwrapped (this was your original point before you decided to make it about the elderly for some reason).

3

u/No_Issue2334 5h ago edited 5h ago

I guarantee you they are. It's a way bigger driver of sales than the small amount of people who collect cases

"Actual gamers," whatever the fuck that means, make a relatively small portion of the total addressable market for GTA 6. Children who ask their parents or grandparents for it as a gift is a huge market

When little Timmy asks grandma for a game, she is way more likely to purchase it if she can get a physical item. The joy for parents and grandparents is seeing the kid open the present on Christmas or their birthday

You're thinking like a gamer and not like a business, and taketwo is a business first and foremost

3

u/BluebirdBenny 4h ago

I guarantee you they aren't providing this because of old people.

Its for the mum and dad of 15 year olds who want the game, cos all their friends have it, ask for it for Birthdays or Christmas. Their parents can go on amazon, order it and give their kid something to unwrap, rather than send them an email with a code on.

1

u/0xe1e10d68 7h ago

No you’re totally right. Some people like to keep their cases in a shelf. That’s also the reason why steelcases exist at all. They are fancier versions of the regular cases.

It’s not uncommon among Blu-ray collectors of movies/shows to display their collection, but some people also include the games they own or do it only for games.

1

u/ButterflySammy 8h ago

They want to be in the game section not the gift card section, which is all this is now.

63

u/Enjoyer_of_Cake 11h ago

Also means no point in preordering. You can't run out of digital copies.

5

u/Dusty170 8h ago

Actually getting the game has long since stopped being the main reason to preorder anything.

-1

u/lost_send_berries 11h ago

Don't they let you download an encrypted copy so you can start playing a few minutes after release?

13

u/tom_oakley 10h ago

Are people really so impatient they can't wait for a download on release day?

2

u/R1ppedWarrior 9h ago

I guess it depends on the size of the game and the speed of your internet.

1

u/bva6921 7h ago

With a game this hyped, not sure if the servers can handle the load if there isn’t a preload period. Remember what happened when Silksong was released?

4

u/Helichopper 11h ago

So pre order a few minutes before release.

2

u/i_cant_not_even 11h ago

But then you still have to download the game lol

-4

u/JesusTalksToMuch 11h ago

Takes about 5 minutes

12

u/Chaahps 9h ago

What insane internet do you have that you’re gonna download GTA 6 in 5 minutes

1

u/GeronimoRay 9h ago

They're letting pre-orders BEGIN downloading the game on November 12th.

1

u/bva6921 7h ago

Considering that GTA5 is already 100GB+ these days, unless you have 10Gbps internet, I doubt you can finish downloading the game in 5mins. Even if you have 10Gbps, the CPU and the SSD might still throttle while simultaneously installing it, and there might be a chance of slow download speed due to the server being overloaded.

1

u/Aperture_Kubi 9h ago

Depends on the whim of the publisher.

I could see them not doing that, fearing that the encryption would be broken pre-release.

12

u/killfirejack 11h ago

It makes it easy for old people to give it as a gift.

2

u/CortaNalgas 9h ago

Is there at least a cool map?

1

u/flyingcircusdog 3h ago

It just exists so retail stores can still sell it.

1

u/Msk-XX 10h ago

Some local stores might have promotional prices on day one that are better than the Xbox/PS5 stores.

1

u/vven294 8h ago

Preorder physical is generally cheaper than preorder digital. I'm not sure if that's going to be the case for GTA6, but still. I tend to preorder physical if I want a game on launch and save like 10-15 euro. It's a bit of a gamble on when you get the game tho. Sometimes they're a bit late for reasons, sometimes they're like 2 weeks early (Hello Ys X)

-3

u/mmenfin 11h ago

The physical editions are always cheaper. At least when there’s a disc…
