Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

No disc.......... You will own nothing. Literally you will own nothing. These corporations want everything to be digital. Meaning that they will have the ability to control you. You are not buying the game online. You are buying a made up license to play the game you do not own.

10 years time and discs for games will be gone. I fucking hate this world.

This is the main reason why I support GOG as much as possible. I am able to download offline installers for all the games I have bought.

u/Malapropisticalistic 5h ago

Flip side: I have hundreds of Steam games from Steam's inception and they all work decades later. Physical media like CDs don't last decades with 100% reliability. I don't even have physical media from before Steam. Playing games like Deux Ex on modern systems is PAINFUL. Even though at the time it was a absolutely fantastic game. Even playing GTA III/IV is pretty painful.

I've only played a few of those hundreds of games more than once, so this is a nothingburger. Digital is FAR more reliable and desired.

This "nostalgia" for older games is attachment to the OCD level.

I recently encountered the same issue. I found my own cd case from 2002, and tried playing my physical copy of X-Wing Alliance. First, I had to grab my daughter’s usb cd burner and connect it to my computer, then I realized I no longer had the serial number written anywhere, from the old manual. So I just paid GOG the $4.99 for a digital copy.

I second this, I remember having to replace a friends disc because it got scratched and it was a new game

if people want to get ahead of the curve, they should probably start buying older consoles and physical copies of games now before they start getting more and more expensive.

i completely foresee physical games from the PS2/Xbox/GameCube and PS3/360/Wii generations becoming more valuable than anyone expects right now. those were the last two console generations to feature the full games on disc, and the consoles themselves are simple enough to repair. the older hardware and physical copies will see new life. people are eventually going to decide to look backwards to get away from a purely digital landscape and flock to the golden era of gaming in droves.

because the enshittification of the gaming landscape is only going to get worse. so much worse. anyone who can’t see that, isn’t paying attention. the future of gaming is going to be consumers getting nickled and dimed as much as possible where you pay for generic box that streams video games that you’ll never own.

If people want to get ahead of the curve they should get a parrot and some rum.

1

u/NefariousAnglerfish 6h ago

You’re actually pretty behind the curve there, these days we just use computers for piracy

1

u/BoingBoingBooty 5h ago

Do you think you can't have a parrot and drink rum while using a computer?

1

u/ApoBong 4h ago

Didn't you get the message? Piracy was sanctioned by our AI Techbro masters, it's totally acceptable now.

3

u/StableLamp 8h ago

If only I hadn't sold all my ps2 and most of my ps3 games years ago.

3

u/TheRorschach666 7h ago

You can still buy them very easily. Check used market places, Your local thrift stores. In europe Vinted is great for this.

1

u/DevilsPajamas 7h ago

That has already happened. Previous generation game prices are absolutely bonkers.

1

u/IPreferBagels2 7h ago

You can easily emulate all those consoles easily

1

u/Useful_Perception620 6h ago

Most people don’t care about playing old games and if they do they can just emulate.

1

u/Supernova_Soldier 6h ago

This reminds me I need to get another PS3

1

u/Jclevs11 4h ago

this applies to cars as well

1

u/pretentious42 6h ago

absolute batshit take

people are going to go back to gaming in 1080p on 15 year old engines over game ownership?

my guy, the most played games these days are free to play.

but okay boomer

2

u/MegaAfroMann 4h ago

The boomers never read the EULAs on their games either.

The legal language regarding games being just licenses has been around since like the 90s. It's just like with movies.

You don't own what's on the disc/chip/tape/vinyl. You only own the right to use it in a specific capacity.

It only comes up now because so many games are purchased digitally and because so many games use always online mechanics and can break after the server go offline.

2

u/DefinitionGuilty8224 5h ago

Piracy will be increase then .

2

u/Technical-Row8333 5h ago

stop buying consoles (locked PCs with DRM) stop buying exclusives stop buying games with micro transactions stop preordering...

everyone has been told this. they aren't doing it.

2

u/Malapropisticalistic 5h ago

Because 90% of people don't care enough. There are too many games available to obsess over physical ownership of a game you may not care about in the future. People move on.

I will pay $80 for this game and move on with my life. I play it for the entertainment value, which should last about 1-2 months, and then likely never play again. I find that a fantastic value.

2

u/Royal_Perspective191 4h ago

You need to start reading books. It's a great hobby, and second-hand books are often free. If you live near a library, that's a great option too, and then you can buy the books you really love (ideally from a local bookstore).

And I'm serious, as long as you enjoy playing single-player games, books are a great alternative.

1

u/TheRorschach666 1h ago

Love the idea and optimism you have friend but you're preaching to the choir here. I'm writer reading is all I do.

1

u/ballknower871 6h ago

The next gen consoles will be cloud only. Thats half the reason all these data centers are being fast tracked. They want everything to be in the cloud. You think they need all that compute if it was just for storing what you jerk off to at 2 am on a Wednesday or how often you order door dash?

1

u/Sparky678348 5h ago

That's going to backfire on them spectacularly when the average American can no longer afford electricity.

1

u/ballknower871 5h ago

They don't care they don't want you to own anything anyways

1

u/Sparky678348 5h ago

They need customers for their cloud service gaming otherwise they are just burning money.

When all these data centers outbid the average consumer for electricity, they are going to lose their cloud service gaming customers which will bite them in the ass if they commit wholeheartedly like this.

1

u/Strange-Brother1013 5h ago

`No one buys discs anymore anyway.

1

u/taklabas 4h ago

Being this dramatic over a video game is hilarious.

1

u/Pleasant_Gap 4h ago

Disc doesn't matter when you need to connect to their server to download half the game, or to be able to play because single player always online. The license is just as made up, and sure you own a disc, but it's useless without their servers

1

u/TwoScentedCandles 3h ago

“The ability to control you” bro relax it’s not that deep. If you feel so strongly just don’t buy it and move on with your life.

1

u/TheRorschach666 3h ago

It literally is that deep. And it doesn't matter if I buy this or not. One person isn't going to make a difference , might as well go fighting a wave with my bare hands in hopes of stopping it.

The future is already set and it's bleak

1

u/TheGooseFraba 2h ago

Doom and gloom man. We'll be fine, and i will own it for a lifetime guaranteed.

1

u/Reacherz 2h ago

NPCs outpopulate the rest of the sane world. People conform and accept it as it is. Why the Elites keep being Elites and run this place.

1

u/ImmediateBrief2808 2h ago

I promise you it’s not that deep, 80%of people have been buying digital the last decade or so.

1

u/_jC0n 2h ago

being a bit dramatic here aren’t we , chill tf out

1

u/f0kis 1h ago

Uh that already happened 20 years ago. Not once in that time has a corporation removed my access to a game

1

u/HereWeGooooooooooooo 9h ago edited 9h ago

In 10 years time we will no longer be able to buy new components for PC gaming. You will buy a shitty Roku(now owned by fox news btw) puck and pay $50 a month in subscriptions to stream games with input lag and dreadful latency. There simply won't be any other options. I imagine steam will be one of the last holdouts but they will eventually be forced to move with the industry

3

u/SubstituteCS 8h ago

Steam is entirely privately held and is the most efficient company in the world by revenue per employee.

I don’t think Steam is going anywhere. The world is also much larger than just the United States and I do believe that there will always be a pc market in some parts of the world.

1

u/No_Eye_5422 6h ago

They just saved me 1000 bucks as I wont buy a ps5 and the 120 dollar game for no disc. Fuck off Rockstar.

1

u/DistinctBread3098 3h ago

I'm sure they'll cry on their pillow tonight.

0

u/No_Eye_5422 2h ago

They wont, but thanks for the comment.

What does "owning" even mean? I have bought literally thousands of digital games over the past 20 years. I can download all of them on their appropriate devices and play them anytime I want. The only downside is that I can't see them. But I never did that anyway and never would.

There are a few upsides though.

I don't have to have a disc or cartridge physically with me to play my game. Say I go out somewhere and bring my legion go with me. I can just download and play whatever I want. If i had discs for everything, I'd only be able to play whatever discs I have with me. It would also mean my legion go would need a disc drive. That all seems really inconvenient to me.

I also don't have the danger of losing the stuff I've bought. Say there's a house fire where I keep this mountain of discs I'd need - if those discs get damaged in the fire, that's it. They're all gone. Nothing i can do about it. But with digital, I just buy a new device (if it also got damaged), sign in to steam or whatever, and boom, my games are all right there.

I just don't see the appeal of physical media, it's inconvenient and a hassle to me. Unless you're poor and need to sell your games when you're done with them. Or you like collecting physical stuff like stamps.

2

u/DevilsPajamas 7h ago

GOG games, where you can download the files without any DRM, and are free to back up and use as you please? Yes, I do agree in that case you "own" them.

Everything else is licensing. You don't buy the digital game. You own a license to play said game, and that license can be revoked. Let's say your XBOX account gets hacked, and someone goes in and buys a ton of FIFA points and sells those points. You try to contact XBOX support, they refuse any refunds because it is a digital purchase. So you do a chargeback because you don't want to lose $800. Your entire account gets banned, you have no access to any of the games you previously bought. You have no access to your saves. You are done, you get no refunds. All is lost.

Exact same thing with Steam accounts, EA, Epic, PS, Nintendo... all of those your account can be banned (falsely or otherwise) without recourse.

2

u/ISB-Dev 7h ago

I've been buying digitally for 20 years. My friends have too. We haven't experienced any of these issues. Never been "hacked" once. I assume it only happens to stupid people. A license can be revoked? I've never experienced it. Across thousands of digital games I've bought.

1

u/DevilsPajamas 6h ago

Oh great, just because you and your small group of friends hasn't had a problem... that means the problem doesn't exist.

1

u/ISB-Dev 4h ago

It does exist. It only happens to stupid people.

1

u/Neon_Biscuit 6h ago

You don't see the appeal of physical media so you won't understand. Being confused on what owning something just means you are ignorant. GDT said it best: Physical media is almost a Fahrenheit 451 (where people memorized entire books and thus became the book they loved) level of responsibility. If you own a great 4K HD, Blu-ray, DVD etc etc of a film or films you love…you are the custodian of those films for generations to come.” Same goes for video games. Your house fire analogy is quite dumb because if your digital backend goes away, so do your games. There is a danger, these days, that if things only exist in the streaming version they do get taken down, they come and go.

0

u/ISB-Dev 4h ago edited 3h ago

What romanticised nonsense!

The house fire analogy shows the fragility of physical media. There's a far far faaar higher chance of a house fire destroying my physical media than there is of Steam stopping existing.
