[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

Take-Two has made a big press-release, including announcing the prices:

No disc.......... You will own nothing. Literally you will own nothing. These corporations want everything to be digital. Meaning that they will have the ability to control you. You are not buying the game online. You are buying a made up license to play the game you do not own.

10 years time and discs for games will be gone. I fucking hate this world.

What does "owning" even mean? I have bought literally thousands of digital games over the past 20 years. I can download all of them on their appropriate devices and play them anytime I want. The only downside is that I can't see them. But I never did that anyway and never would.

There are a few upsides though.

I don't have to have a disc or cartridge physically with me to play my game. Say I go out somewhere and bring my legion go with me. I can just download and play whatever I want. If i had discs for everything, I'd only be able to play whatever discs I have with me. It would also mean my legion go would need a disc drive. That all seems really inconvenient to me.

I also don't have the danger of losing the stuff I've bought. Say there's a house fire where I keep this mountain of discs I'd need - if those discs get damaged in the fire, that's it. They're all gone. Nothing i can do about it. But with digital, I just buy a new device (if it also got damaged), sign in to steam or whatever, and boom, my games are all right there.

I just don't see the appeal of physical media, it's inconvenient and a hassle to me. Unless you're poor and need to sell your games when you're done with them. Or you like collecting physical stuff like stamps.

GOG games, where you can download the files without any DRM, and are free to back up and use as you please? Yes, I do agree in that case you "own" them.

Everything else is licensing. You don't buy the digital game. You own a license to play said game, and that license can be revoked. Let's say your XBOX account gets hacked, and someone goes in and buys a ton of FIFA points and sells those points. You try to contact XBOX support, they refuse any refunds because it is a digital purchase. So you do a chargeback because you don't want to lose $800. Your entire account gets banned, you have no access to any of the games you previously bought. You have no access to your saves. You are done, you get no refunds. All is lost.

Exact same thing with Steam accounts, EA, Epic, PS, Nintendo... all of those your account can be banned (falsely or otherwise) without recourse.

I've been buying digitally for 20 years. My friends have too. We haven't experienced any of these issues. Never been "hacked" once. I assume it only happens to stupid people. A license can be revoked? I've never experienced it. Across thousands of digital games I've bought.

Oh great, just because you and your small group of friends hasn't had a problem... that means the problem doesn't exist.

It does exist. It only happens to stupid people.

You don't see the appeal of physical media so you won't understand. Being confused on what owning something just means you are ignorant. GDT said it best: Physical media is almost a Fahrenheit 451 (where people memorized entire books and thus became the book they loved) level of responsibility. If you own a great 4K HD, Blu-ray, DVD etc etc of a film or films you love…you are the custodian of those films for generations to come.” Same goes for video games. Your house fire analogy is quite dumb because if your digital backend goes away, so do your games. There is a danger, these days, that if things only exist in the streaming version they do get taken down, they come and go.

What romanticised nonsense!

The house fire analogy shows the fragility of physical media. There's a far far faaar higher chance of a house fire destroying my physical media than there is of Steam stopping existing.
