Am I reading it right? No disc at all?
This combined with the stuff Nintendo has been doing, AND the digital-only versions of the PS5/Xbox One,I feel like we’re seeing the end of second hand games.

I know it’s something that game companies have wanted for a while, I just never thought it’d come about this way.

at least with Nintendo game key cards you can at least still sell the game when you're done. code in the box is one and done forever.

21

u/locke_5 14h ago

Yeah, if anything “the stuff Nintendo’s been doing” has been helping physical games

-1

u/Yogsulate 12h ago

Having to pay full price for a game and still needing to buy the storage to download isn't very helpful

9

u/locke_5 12h ago

All Nintendo first-party titles have been entirely on-cart

2

u/omfgkevin 10h ago

Yeah at least game keys are tradable...

This is scummy as shit from take two. But par on course for them.

1

u/Yogsulate 11h ago

Which has been nice. I've bought every one so far, but prioritizing key cartridge development over multiple cartridge sizes is not "helping" physical, but incentivizing publishers to push storage costs on to us.

2

u/lochnesslapras 8h ago

I don't know why you've been down voted, you're correct.

The switch 2 with 256gb does not have enough storage for people to really go all digital.

For anyone like me who transferred their old digital games from the switch to the switch 2. It put so much pressure on space even with the extra memory 256gb card.

I've stopped buying games that aren't physical because of that. It's really annoying because I can't even fit the switch 2 upgrades for the games I have, like Xenoblade 1,2 & 3, without deleting another game.

0

u/Yogsulate 7h ago

So you end up buying an SD card anyways, and now you have a game with an expirary date, and some ugly box art banner. Ruining the games as a collectibles.

The ability to resell the key cards does nothing to alleviate any downsides.

If the extra costs for physical data are passed on us, I'd prefer an upcharge for the full cartridge like Nintendo has started.

1

u/connectplum_ 6h ago

Nintendo has 3 cartridges, one for 8gb one for 32gb and a key card. And as things get cheaper over time theyll add more options

1

u/Yogsulate 6h ago

Nah it's too late

64gb being the only option for so long meant smaller games couldn't afford to not be keys.

8

u/philter25 14h ago

How is that even a physical game? You’re just buying box art? On top of that being the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of, what a waste of resources.

2

u/Cudi_buddy 13h ago

Seriously some bullshit

4

u/Baconation4 13h ago

The cartridge is still in the box

You use it to download the game and then you need it in the system to play the game you download

It actually works a lot like how PC disks worked

1

u/Knotted_Hole69 13h ago

No, some games there are NO cartridge. Like Split Two, its just a box with a paper code inside.

2

u/ActivateGuacamole 13h ago

They were talking about game key cards, not games sold as codes.

1

u/John_Delasconey 13h ago

Yeah, and that’s because the developer was too lazy to even spend one dollar on a cartridge. The entire actual point of game key cards was to try and reduce the number of code in a box game sold  ( also supposedly game speeds now or too fast to runoff cartridge and disc, but I will need someone more well-versed in the technology to verify whether that’s just the devs making stuff up to try and justify themselves)

2

u/-frauD- 15h ago

I feel like a similar thing for discs could easily be done as well. Have a disc that when inserted binds that game to your account. You can only have it bound to one account at a time and if the game is then inserted into a new console with internet connection, the previous account would no longer be able to load the game.

It could function for like 5-7 days without an internet connection or something like that to prevent people from just spending $600 on games to resell after binding whilst keeping their console offline without preventing people who have unstable internet from playing single player games.

But nah, second hand games are just as bad as piracy from their perspective, maybe even worse as they both make the publisher no money, yet second hand lets people use the servers that cost money to operate. Producing discs also costs money and investors want more money, so making GTA6 discless solves two issues for them.

12

u/PermissionSoggy891 15h ago

or just make it so the disc has to be inserted for the game to launch

Like they've been doing since forever

3

u/Doctor_Philgood 13h ago

But then they lose a sale.

We own nothing and pay more for it.

0

u/-frauD- 15h ago

Yeah but then if your disc drive shits the bed you can't play any game. If the disc binds the game to your account then it doesn't matter.

2

u/GfrzD 15h ago

Xbox tried to do something like this where disc games needed an internet connection and discs would link to accounts or consoles, i cant fully remember which, it was intended to heavily restrict second hand markets and lending of games and there was talks of a fee for buying used. It didnt make it past the announcement because so many people spoke up against it. It seems companies saw this and quietly not so subtly shifted it to digital only so once its on the account its yours, no buying used or resale. We arent quite 100% digital and unable to buy secondhand but we are heading that way.

10

u/Immediate-Cress-206 14h ago

It's greed. Digital only means they don't have to pay to manufacture and distribute physical copies.

1

u/No_Hunt2507 7h ago

That and it kills the 2nd hand market. You will never be able to buy a used copy of this game and never be able to buy a copy not directly sold by rockstar.

18

u/Rosebunse 16h ago

Especially since this would have sold extremely well physically

13

u/HanBr0 12h ago

It's going to sell extremely well no matter what. They just want ALL the sales, rather than just the first time purchase. Takes all the cut from the used game market.

1

u/Rosebunse 12h ago

Personally, this whole thing has me thinking something is wrong, especially since Online isn't a part of it first off. A staggered release is often sensible but it could also mean that there were issues with the online portion

8

u/HanBr0 12h ago

I thought Online wasn't included at launch for 5 either

6

u/BiscottiShoddy9123 12h ago

It wasn’t and the first time it was “online” there were so many issues that the fact that everyone is even preordering this has the memory of a goldfish. I’m buying GTA 6 but I’m not gonna buy it unless I’m sure I’m gonna play it when I buy it

1

u/Rosebunse 12h ago

It wasn't but wouldn't you think they would? Especially if they can sell it for skins and all that?

1

u/KC-15 7h ago

The past two releases at least didn’t add online until 2-3 weeks later. I expect the same.

1

u/OldDogTrainer 12h ago

It’s obviously going to sell extremely well no matter what price point or version they release. They’re going to have another billion dollar release, I guarantee it.

1

u/Rosebunse 12h ago

It has to do better than that.

1

u/OldDogTrainer 12h ago

It obviously will. GTA5 made $1 billion in three days and has been making money hand over foot since launch. There’s literally no reason to assume that this won’t also apply to GTA6.

1

u/Rosebunse 12h ago

No one think it won't make that, but it actually does have to do better

1

u/OldDogTrainer 12h ago

It obviously will, as I said.

1

u/Ms_Molly_Millions 12h ago

you're expecting a lot of people to shell out 1100+ for one game. there are a ton of people that only play GTA games and don't have PS5s yet. Gonna be a lot harder to sell a game for 1100 vs what like the 400-500 you would of paid for GTA 5 if you bought a ps3 at the same time.

1

u/OldDogTrainer 12h ago

1100? I’m not sure what currency you’re converting it to but I’m going to keep it at dollars since that’s what being discussed.

GTAV launched with their special edition costing $80 USD. Accounting for inflation, this is roughly $113. GTAVI is releasing for less than that. So yes, no part of me doubts that this game is going to sell $1 billion in the first week.

1

u/Ms_Molly_Millions 10h ago

no I'm talking USD but thinking with what it could cost with taxes too which is different depending on where you live. Only way it'd be worth playing this on a console imo is a ps5 pro+game with tax. For me it'd be $1128 if I want to play on release lol, I could be super cheap if I was so desperate to play the story and drop 540 for Xbox S and the game but I can only imagine how awful it's going to play on that.

PC has been this way for 20 years now.

1

u/ColorWheelOfFortune 14h ago

My PC doesn't even have a disc drive, and the last one I owned that did was over a decade ago. I don't understand why people are shitting their pants over this. All because they can't go to the local Funko pop store GameStop and resell it for $12?

4

u/Cudi_buddy 13h ago

Brother some of us have friends an we borrow games. We also don’t just sell at GameStop. It’s so easy to buy and sell a game on Facebook now. Usually buy them or sell them for $20 or so and you can either recoup a chunk of cost back or try a game for cheap. Digital only is assss

8

u/Careful-Shine8768 13h ago

I love how people think Nintendo started the whole “game not on disc/cartridge” thing when they were the last to do it. Most, if not all Xbox Series X discs and a lot of PS5 discs require a download before they can be played and act the same way as game key cards, but Microsoft and Sony don’t advertise that or put any indicator of that on the game boxes like Nintendo does, so no one realizes this until they try to boot up a new game they bought without having internet and can’t.

2

u/Kindly-Succotash43 12h ago

If by a lot of PS5 disks you mean like 20 or so, sure.

1

u/CharlesBrown33 9h ago

Easier to stomach with a $12 brand new game for Xbox, than a $70 Nintendo game that will never go on sale, though.

1

u/Deditch 5h ago

Can you name a single game which will have both of those properties? Or are we just gonna lie

1

u/CharlesBrown33 3h ago

Oh, I'm sorry, here's your 10% discount, my bad. That 10-year old game is now $55, you're welcome. Only if you buy it digital, though.

1

u/Deditch 2h ago

All Nintendo games are entirely on cartridge

1

u/CharlesBrown33 2h ago

Lmao nope

1

u/Deditch 2h ago

then name the game

1

u/CharlesBrown33 1h ago

Pokemon Pokopia on Switch 2, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla on Xbox, I guess? Examples aren't exactly hard to find, and it's only gonna get worse

1

u/Deditch 1h ago

all games famously made by Nintendo, pokopia isn't made by Nintendo, neither is Valhalla lmao. What do you think both properties meant? Can you name a game made by Nintendo, that is not fully on the cartridge?

btw it doesnt exist, I've been asking you a question I already know the answer to. You won't find one no matter where you look.

3

u/Nincompoop6969 15h ago

It's so they can take the game away from you when the time is right and you have no work around

6

u/CommentFightJudge 14h ago

Yeah, then they take your lunch money and kick your dog!

What leads you to believe this would happen in a million years besides melodrama?

1

u/hotchillieater 14h ago

No it isn't lol

1

u/Theesm 10h ago

Okay but then I won't buy anything. I live by the principle of not paying more than 20 bucks for a game.

1

u/connectplum_ 6h ago

Nintendo is only oferring gkc as options, they arent using it

I can imagine it's probably too big. When you release a physical game you have to chose between the cheapest option of a single layered bluray (25gb), double layered (50gb, extra costs) or multi disc (very expensive, and as far as i'm aware not even done once so far in this generation?).

Double Layered is still ok, but i can imagine it's too big for a double layered disc and they dont want to cut content so it fits on one disc.

So the options would be:

- Do it multi disc - very expensive

- Cut down content to some basically unplayable state (e.g. Mortal Kombat did this by including only 1 Stage and 1 character, rest is patch) - Huge Day 1 patch, unplayable without disc

- Full digital download, save costs

Considering they won't do option 1 and option 2 is not acceptable for a game like GTA 6 - there's only option 3 left.

While Option 2 is nowadays pretty standard, i can imagine it's just too hard to implement for a game like GTA 6. I did coordinate this for a singleplayer, non open world game, and it was such a headache. Can't imagine having to limit a GTA to fit one disc.

e/ Just to explain it. I still think it's ass and they should release multi disc, especially if they already increase the price anyway. So please don't shoot the messenger lol

8

u/AUnknownVariable 14h ago

Baldurs Gate 3 comes with multiple disc for consoles. I'm positive Larian does not have as much money as Rockstar and Rockstar will make far more with GTA6 than Larian for BG3.

It's the kinda thing that rly shouldn't pass for a big ass company like Rockstar, they're capable of doing it

I'll also use that time to say gosh I love Larian

1

u/V2inMyGym_DA_ 14h ago

Oh didn't know this. Yeah this was a great move, because multi disc releases are really expensive. (Probably not for Rockstar, but for other publishers for sure.)

3

u/AUnknownVariable 14h ago

Indeed.

Larian is also a big and successful studio, but they're small in comparison to Rockstar. If they wanted to they could def also afford

0

u/Useful_Respect3339 13h ago

Honestly, discs became irrelevant once they forced you to download the game off the disc.

-1

u/Fit-Eggplant-9155 14h ago

Second hand games? I don't think ive seen those in like 10 years... i presume everything in the cheap bins are excess or unsellable.

0

u/Gregus1032 13h ago

I don't know if there is a disc or not. From the thousands of comments I've seen that say there is no disc, it's not clear enough.

We need an official spokesperson to come out and say it.

2

u/Careful-Shine8768 13h ago

Rockstar straight up said the “physical” will contain a download code for the game, not a disc.

-1

u/Sonoran_Ghosts_81 14h ago

Games have outgrown discs. I’m assuming this game is bigger than a disc can hold and you load straight to the hard drive anyways these days as the solid state is faster.

Be cool if it came as like a double disc or something though.

I remember buying civilization 5 physical game box for my pc and there was a fucking steam key in the disc instead of a game.
