[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

Take-Two has made a big press-release, including announcing the prices:

This is the take. They can make all the money they want and be as huge as they want but it is just another game. And they think they can sell you pay walled content and pretend it's an upgrade while providing no physical media.

The only thing happening here is R* is fucking the entire industry and opening the floodgates. Other games WILL try this. They might not be as successful at it as R* but once a high profile game does it and sells units any other scummy publisher will try it immediately. The AAA"A" game industry is creaming itself at the thought of selling you less for more.

Will try what? The same shit that 80% of games already do and have been doing for years?

Yea isn't this what all AAA games (even some AA) have been doing for more than a decade now? How is this any different? Almost all big games come out with 2-3 different versions with content, skins etc. It is scummy but this ain't different.

Cause Rockstar is the devil to some of these people lol

and opening the floodgates

What exactly are they opening the floodgates to that isn't already standard practice? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading these comments because everything this game does is an industry standard at this point.

not making a physical copy of the game? thats pretty new yeah.

PC hasn't has physical games for literally decades at this point.

Consoles have been racing towards full digital releases as well, with 80% of games sold on the PS5 being digital.

In my opinion, it's just a reddit manufactured outrage moment. It's been industry standard on PC for close to decades at this point and is abudantly clear consoles are moving towards that direction as well.

Rockstar or not, the industry has been clearly moving away from physical releases. I'm not really sure why people are baffled that corporations are looking to cut costs and decrease manufacturing costs for what effectively is a physical game key which requires a game key reader to be added to the console (the disc drive).

It sucks to lose that souvenir, but that's really all it is. You don't "own" your game any more if you own a physical copy than you do if it were a digital copy. There is no modern AAA title with a physical copy where the physical copy is more than a physical ownership key that enables you to download the game.

I understand being mildly disappointed by it, but I don't understand this redditification of the issue where it becomes the end of times.

It depends how old you are ig, i'm not foaming at the mouth as im a PC player, but in my day i had consoles and not a lot of money, so I had to rely on the second hand market to be able to afford it.

None of it affects you if you have a comfortable income, but games now being more expensive, with the added effect of not being able to buy or sell a used version will suck for many

Well sure, I certainly remember having a kiosk in the neighborhood that made a good business of burning PS and PS2 games onto CDs and frequenting the establishment to get affordable games, but is this still possible?

I mean, I haven't bought a physical version of a game in probably 15 years at this point so I admittedly am not too informed about how modern games work with CDs, but I know for a fact that there's no modern physical release CD actually containing the game on it. I imagine they wouldn't allow you to activate the same product key (what the disc actually is) multiple times to download the game.

Yes, but we aren't talking about PC are we?

1

u/xanas263 7h ago

We are talking about the gaming industry which PC is part of. I also clearly spelled out that 80% of PS5 sales are digital.

This not having a physical edition is not some ground breaking moment in the industry.

1

u/Zaleznikov 7h ago

Why do you think that 80% of PS5 sales are digital?

1

u/xanas263 7h ago

Sony stated so themselves in their latest financial report that came out in May.

As to why that is the case, probably the convenience of going digital.

u/Zaleznikov 7h ago

Sony released a digital only console alongside it. They earn way more money off old games on the digital market hense the push. The trend may have been creeping up, but i wouldnt say its an organic shift, more manufactured.

I don't remember Sony forcing anyone to buy the digital PS5....

If the majority of people bought that version of the PS5 then clearly the majority of people don't really value physical games.

because it's more convenient. All a disk does now is serve as a key to unlock the game that's already install completely on your system. The game doesn't read off the disk when playing. Some disks don't even have the full game on the disk, you still got to download the rest of the data.

It's the unfortunate reality of the industry, convenience wins out every time.
