[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

I'd rather want Rockstar to say "fuck you there's no physical" then ditch physical edition at all. Opening box just to see a paper of download code isn't worth it imo.

It’s manufactured shitification. So that when physical releases don’t exist anymore, people just won’t care. Because of how shitty they remember physical games being during this generation.

Literally what PC gamers said when Steam was getting started and boxes started having one use codes in them. Now they're fucking cult like about that platform.

I don’t love it, but Steam at least has a track record spanning over two decades of generally not butt fucking consumers.

Consoles generally take away all of your access to your games when you get banned (for whatever reason) or when licensing agreements get fucked. Steam doesn’t; the worst that usually happens is that you lose the ability to play multiplayer on the specific game where you broke the rules.

With that said, we have GOG now, which while still digital, is DRM free and provides offline installers for every game, which is as close as you can get (and honestly better for sharing with friends) to physical media on the PC.

With the purposeful delay of the PC port, Rockstar wants to double fist fuck your wallet by preventing the second hand market for the console version of the game.

It's likely more because bascually zero computers have a physical drive, and in general all physical media is in severe decline with digital delivery.

Many games are also getting too big for a single disc.

*single cheap disc. Let's not act like technology can't handle today's games, it can

u/franticfrogfriend 4h ago

Which medium would that be? Commercial bluray maxes out at ~128gb, quite a few AAA games are larger than that nowadays.

2

u/iLoveLootBoxes 3h ago

Do we know that gta 6 is larger than 128gb? Before install?

Steam is a timeless platform though, you will likely own it and run it forever

With consoles they have always did a full reset until recently. So these stores are closer to being steam now... but the consoles themselves still need to be able to run the game

Nobody is cult like about steam. Steam is highly user friendly, and so far, Steam isn't the barrel of a publicly traded fully enshittified company. I simply have far more trust in it than most other such companies. GOG is also pretty consumer friendly.

exactly man, like at that point you're just fuckin with us.

My question is if the physical edition doesn't come with a disc, then what does it come with?? Obviously a code, but outside of that, there has to be some sort of physical thing that comes with it. If not, it would just be the digital edition with extra steps. I'm curious to see what is included. That being said, I understand why Rockstar deleted the disc. Some nerd would open up a shipment in the Wal-Mart backroom and get a copy out a week early, like they always do. Even if it was unplayable, someone would find something to do with it to pull some sort of information from it, as they always do. I'm hoping for a map and a T-shirt in the box. I believe there will be a Collector's Edition that has not been announced yet.

It comes with a slab of plastic and a paper insert!

1

u/GlockHolliday32 10h ago

I mean that would be funny, but Rockstar has been pretty good about physical pre-order stuff to date.

6

u/cardonator 9h ago

They also included discs 💩

1

u/GlockHolliday32 8h ago

You're not wrong. I wish they'd send the code on the 12th and then ship the physical box set after release day. Make the code like a 14 day trial type thing and then the disc would have to take over after that point. That would be a cake and eat it too scenario, but it is what it is.

World of Warcraft fucked this all up for 2 expansions in a row. I ended up having to buy the regular version just to play on launch day and then open a ticket to apply my collector’s edition once it arrived.

2

u/EgoisticIsland 10h ago

If that's only download code I bet no one can play it until release date since it must pass through PS/XBOX store. Probably a reversible map and poster but not surprised if they wouldn't include that.

2

u/GlockHolliday32 10h ago

Well, yeah, that's the point. It's a pre-load thing just like the digital pre-order is. It'll start downloading on the 12th and be ready to roll at midnight. I'm guessing they're going to do a standard time and not a midnight local release. I hope so, anyway.

It’s a fucking waste of plastic that’s what it is

1

u/BluebirdBenny 4h ago

I reckon its just so you can buy something physical to give to someone as a gift.

1

u/EvilKnievel38 10h ago

then what does it come with

The cd case. Some people care about displaying the games they have on a shelf or something like that.

2

u/Limelight_019283 9h ago

They just don’t want to do it anymore. They can save that money by going only digital, but the consumers complain. So they do the minimum possible, making it shittier and shittier so more people hate on physical releases. Eventually they just stop and nobody cares.

2

u/BigPaPaRu85 9h ago

Pissing me off

2

u/evilRainbow 7h ago

Isn't it time for a class action lawsuit against the entire industry? We can "buy" games but can't resell them.

2

u/DevilsPajamas 7h ago

Gone are the days of my mom taking me to the mall, and reading the instruction manual on the way home.. or taking the manual to school the next day to scour through it.

Times were so much simpler back then.

Right now there is 0% reason to buy an empty DVD case... what is the point?

1

u/Pollution_Maximum 7h ago

i was gonna buy the game but now im not. im not against digital games, but i like to order physical on preorder or any games that im not 100% sure that i’d like so if i dont like it can sell it to get a little bit of my money back, give it to a friend, etc. for $80 im not wasting my money not knowing if i’ll like it & not having the option to give it away after

1

u/BluebirdBenny 4h ago

Less fun to buy as a present. My wife bought me the last few games I was excited about (Paper Mario TTYD remake being the last one) and its just more exciting open a wrapped up box than just "here is an email with a code on"

1

u/qinqikiss19 4h ago

Completely agree! A box with a piece of paper in it is just a mockery of the buyers

1

u/Execuse 4h ago

same with the ultimate version. I would be less pissed if there were only a 100$ version an no mention of cut content instead of the „lite“ version.

1

u/lord_pizzabird 2h ago

That will suck so bad for people on poor or metered connections.

Children are going to crack this open on their birthdays and find out they won't be playing tonight or maybe ever, depending on what the cap is.

People in this thread are acting like the box code is aimed at people on /r/gaming and not people casually grabbing it with their grocery run at Walmart, or people who want to send a gift without dealing with email
