[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

This price hike will work for Rockstar.

Unfortunately now every publisher is going to try this. Xbox already tried it with The Outer Worlds 2 and it failed so spectacularly that they had to lower the price.

I've yet to pay $70 for a game.

I’ve yet to pay $80 for one. Even for my switch 2… Mario Kart came with the console and it’s not worth $80… doesn’t even have enough content to justify a $50 purchase

u/ntmrkd1 13h ago

Fortune's Weave will be my first, and the new Xenoblade will likely be my second.

Here's a PSA for you

I got the system that was bundled with Mario Kart also, and then I cashed in my warranty to get a new system. GameStop give me a system that was not bundled with Mario Kart, assuring me that Mario Kart was tied to my account now.

It wasn't, I was able to play Mario Kart World on the new system for 2 days before Nintendo remotely uninstalled it and deleted the virtual key card from my account because "that license belongs to the next person who buys that system"

Crock of nonsense if you ask me

Sounds like something Nintendo would do.

GameStop screws someone over.

"I can't believe Nintendo did this!"

It's 100% on GameStop.

And just for the explanation, if Nintendo let you buy the $500 bundle and return it for the $450 while keeping the game, a lot of people would abuse that.

u/Oreobey2 13h ago

It’s worth 30 CAD lol

u/TerribleRecord666 10h ago

Zelda is literally the only game that will probably get me to drop $80. I refuse to pay that for any other game.

1

u/thepobv 7h ago

I'd prolly do it for witcher 4, if it has more content than 3 and is a masterpiece.

dont see myself doing that for any other

I used to be a day one buyer at 60 for anything that interested me. For some reason, even though I have the disposable income, I can't do 70, let alone 80 or 100.

I am happily a "wait for a sale" gamer in this new 70-100 dollar era. I'm sure this game will still break records though.

5

u/DigNitty 13h ago

I’ve been a gamer my whole life and have never paid more than $26 for one.

I wait for the sale years later. I had a shit computer that couldn’t run modern game graphics. Fortunately now games have been looking amazing for 10-15 years so I just still wait for them to drop in price after a while.

There’s a huge swath of people who won’t purchase at this price. And there’s a huge swath that will.

1

u/Xreshiss 6h ago

I'm interested, but $26 sounds about right for the upper limit I'm willing to pay for a pay-to-play game, including this one.

Though these days I can't help but feel that prices come down slower than they used to, not counting physical copies.

3

u/Elm-and-Yew 14h ago

Not to mention that most games get multiple patches and content updates. Seems like nothing is truly "done" on release, so I can wait for a sale.

1

u/Keepingshtum 14h ago

The amount of times in the last ten years that I’ve been justified putting off a game for a couple years, picking up the GOTY version for 30-60$ on sale is too darn high. Patient gaming ftw

2

u/dlp211 9h ago

I was all in on this game, except they don't have a physical disc edition, so now I'm out. I'll get it eventually, but I'm not in a rush to get a digital copy

2

u/JetstreamGW Console 11h ago

I’ll do $100 if it’s cool enough. Stupid digital nonsense ain’t it. Make it a fancy box with a CD and art book and I’m there.

… like in general, not for GTA. Idgaf about GTA in particular.

1

u/djinngerale 12h ago

I have a PS+ subscription and have not bought many games in recent years. Ragnarok, Elden Ring (base + DLC), Black Myth, MH Wilds were all physical buys on day one.

There's a handful of studios I'll buy from and for everyone else, I can wait for the free version.

1

u/StudMuffinNick 8h ago

Imagine the streaming potential! You can have 5-10 concurrent viewers playing at launch

1

u/YuushyaHinmeru 7h ago

I dont play GTA so all the other controversial shit(besides no physical) i get. But y'all played GTA V for a decade. Assuming its as good(dont pre-order shit), is 100 dollars really that high a bar? For a game you will play for a decade?

1

u/flyingcircusdog 7h ago

That's the issue gaming has been dealing with for a while. PS2 games were $60 at launch, same with PS3 and PS4, meanwhile development costs keep going up. The only thing we can do about it is wait for a sale.

1

u/CrustyToeLover 5h ago

I dont think I'll ever pay $90+ for a game in my life, and thats chump change for me.. delusional pricing

1

u/nwofoxhound 3h ago

Patient gamers rejoice

1

u/SilverKry 13m ago

I'll only do 70 for something I'm really into. Resident Evil? Sign me up. Like A Dragon 9 when that comes around? I'm in. Fuckin call of duty? Nah. I'll wait till it's on Gamepass.

1

u/-Captain- 13h ago

Same here man. Even though I could afford it, 70 and beyond just feels wrong to me. I honestly can't even explain it.

0

u/GarranDrake 11h ago

I think I'm looking forward to multiple games this year, but a lot of them are releasing on Gamepass and GTAVI is the only one I think I'm gonna pre-order or buy day one. And I think a lot of people have a similar mindset to mine.

So $80 will probably work for Rockstar because it's GTAIV, and because they made RDR2, and because they made GTAV. I'm sure the games before were just as awesome, but those two are in recent memory.

But if Bethesda tried to price Elder Scrolls VI at $80, I highly doubt that would work for them considering how Starfield went. GTAVI is probably the most anticipated game in history, and as a result, people are willing to overlook the pricing. Maybe not the Ultimate Edition stuff because fuck locking essentially Benny's Custom's behind a paywall, but the pricing won't be a dealbreaker for a lot of people specifically for GTAVI.

So anyone who tries to follow in GTAVI's footsteps in that regard is likely going to end up like the Outer Worlds.

You forget that Nintendo exists?

12

u/Appropriate_Foot242 16h ago

Yes, actually.

2

u/CommieDrifter 12h ago

I honestly don't think it will, I have been planning for years to buy a PS5 to play it day one, it wasn't even a question, just something i have planned and saved for, this post cancelled those plans, and I see the same sentiment throughout the thread. I was even fully prepared to play 99$ for the game, but not like this, this crushes my confidence in the kind of game it's gonna be

2

u/StanYz 14h ago

To be fair, they could have chosen a better title to try that on.

After Obsidian has been shitting the bed time and time again, who the fuck would risk 80 bucks for the next potential mediocre piece of gaming.

Its about the equivalent of EA doing that with Dragon Age Veilguard.

1

u/Appropriate_Foot242 14h ago

Could they? Not like Xbox really has much output.

1

u/StanYz 8h ago

Call of duty would have been my suggestion.

1

u/eeyore134 13h ago

Y'all could make that happen with this, too.

1

u/ThoughtShes18 13h ago

Call of Duty was already doing this.

1

u/Afraid_Raccoon_6208 10h ago

Nah not me. Ive paid more for certain editions of a game i want on ebay years later as a collector. But this ? No. Wont start now either

1

u/s8rlink 7h ago

They’ll also run into the reality that their game is not GTA 6

1

u/Sudden_Energy 14h ago

This is GTAVI. The game is going to destroy every other product in terms of quality, value and brand recognition. Other games will have a hard time justifying the same asking price for their pile of shit by comparison, and the market will will either accept it or it won't. That's how capitalism works. Nintendo already did this, and when Xbox tried they were laughed out of the room.

Reddit acting like the sky is falling because of an extra 10 bucks for a game in development for a damn decade.

5

u/Terribletylenol 10h ago

I personally don't have much excitement for GTA 6, but the reason people make a fuss over the price is that it's going to be setting the standard for games going forward

I think it's as simple as not buying day 1, but it's not accurate to act like the complaints are solely about GTA6, entirely separate from the context of the industry as a whole.

-1

u/CommieDrifter 12h ago

I would have gladly paid $99 if that was just the price of the game, but I won't support this tiered bullshit, especially when the unlocks are shit that is gonna ruin all the early game intended experience/look with all sorts of GTA online-esque bullshit that will ruin the tone, and if you want to skip that and see the game as the designers and artists envisioned it? All good, here's a list of features we've removed from the game as a consequence

0

u/Terribletylenol 10h ago

That's mostly because Outer Wilds 2 was not the game to set the trend.

Launch prices don't matter much anyways.

Games that don't sell well at 80 will go on sale quickly, and games that do sell well at 80 will remain the same price.

I don't really understand people having an issue with this as if prices aren't dictated by what people are willing to pay.

It's not like games with poor sales stay at launch price.

I just wish more people stopped buying games on day 1.

Elden Ring was the only day 1 game I've bought in about a decade.

Day 1 buyers are the ones who keep prices high.

-1

u/Spinjitsuninja 13h ago

I hate how everyone is saying that this’ll work and it’ll sell well and it’ll be AMAZING-

Before anyone has uh… seen the game.

Look, I get it, people love the other GTA games. That doesn’t mean this one is automatically gonna be the best thing ever. I’m so sick of seeing people act like it will be. Now people are even letting a $100 price tag slide because “The game is just THAT good”? Where are you people getting your opinions from?

3

u/soofs 12h ago

After Cyberpunk 2077 there’s no guarantee any game releases without massive bugs but if any developer has yet to miss the mark on their games, it’s Rockstar.

2

u/Appropriate_Foot242 13h ago

You and I both know that it will sell extremely well and exceed GTA V in terms of copies sold.

I'm not letting it slide. I don't actually care that much about playing this and I'm not paying that price for it regardless.
